Birmingham posse: Accommodation now booked!

Was your slot today? Wish ours was!!

Where did you get and what was the whole process like?? Was there much choice-ie if you want a mid range flat on the vale (5-6k), was it possible?

Is it less stressful than eg the Next sale 😂

CiderWithLizzie · 19/08/2022 12:16

DD has her first choice - history at Manchester. She got A star, AA. She was 1 point of an A star in history and 3 points off in English lit. She’s not bothered about a remark but just wondering whether it would be a good idea or not? Thanks.

Leicester is solid all round. Is it accredited ? That's regarded as helpful.

I don’t think it is, I can’t see anywhere that says it is

Fruitygal · 19/08/2022 12:19

@CiderWithLizzie I would discuss with school/college but I would say anything less than 5 marks is worth considering. You need to consider the boundaries too - some exams only 15 marks between bands so could go up or down and others 30 marks between so less risky.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 11:54

@Monkey she got high Bs but not close enough to warrant remarks. The C was history (A,B,D) bombed last paper!

Did she feel like she bombed the last paper? Re-marks can go up a lot, particularly if their writing is difficult to read. I would be getting that D paper reviewed if she did not think it was awful. As I said before, English lit went from a 6 to a 9 for us and others have posted about dramatic changes. If AQA I think you can ask the school to download the papers (free) and check before sending for re-mark.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 12:28

She felt it bombed. Had a total panic and it was always her weakest area but thanks @Monkey2001

Monkey2001 · 19/08/2022 12:30

@Fiddlersgreen feeling your frustration, an Insurance offer only works if you can get somewhere to live! DS1 was very impressed by Leicester for Medicine - took him totally by surprise and he dropped Edinburgh (great city, but medical school too much up themselves) for Leicester (super friendly, great curries, positive reviews). DS2 will have it on his list.

I just dipped into Clearing and saw Cardiff are there for 120-128 points - I thought they were the best in the country for journalism? How many points does your DS have?

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 19/08/2022 12:32

Thanks for your hardwork on the updated list @singingstones

We are definitely Cardiff now. It was real work to accentuate the positives to Dd yesterday. In her mind Southampton = Perfect option. It was awful seeing her so upset. BUT;

Cardiff wanted her, they changed her offer as unconditional.
She's a singer and although she was swayed by the pop/rock element at Southampton she had started to talk about e.g joining operatic society. (Cardiff trumps Southampton here).
Cardiff the City- what an exciting adventure
Yes it's far but not that far by car. Plus she gets free train travel on GWR.
It's a great course, with a supportive department

Student finance changed, accommodation choices submitted.

Nothing prepared me for seeing her so upset. She was heart-broken about her Music result. Eyes all puffy still this morning. Will be asking for a paper review just for peace of mind.

Birmingham people - DD knows her allocation is today but hasn’t had a time slot yet.
Im guessing she can only access the accommodation portal once she has? Or is there a short cut we’re missing?

cheninblanc · 19/08/2022 12:38

We are still in limbo, being told now there may be a decision this evening. Cannot believe how they are treating us, just a yes or no. Dd has enrolled a level 4 btec so has a plan

Cardiff was his firm choice.
thanks so much for the feedback on Leicester

I hope things start to look better for you and Dd today @Benjispruce4 it sounds like she is starting to find a path?

Update on our Newcastle position. It appears that Newcastle did not need to use their waiting list, so he will not get the deferred offer he hoped for and will be doing UCAT, medicine applications and Chemistry alongside his hospital job. But we realised yesterday that he did not reply to an e-mail in June asking them to confirm by the end of July that they wanted to stay on the waiting list, so it is a big relief that no offers were made and his administrative incompetence was not to blame!

DS1 didn''t get in first time and applied in a gap year and I have to say that the whole experience is SO much better when you apply with grades, get an unconditional offer, get your accommodation sorted early and know where you stand. Silver lining for anyone with an unplanned gap year (maybe @icanbewhatiwant DS)

Well done Orange I'm glad it's sorted. It's awful to see them so devastated but in a few weeks I'm sure she will be loving life. I came to Wales almost 30 years ago to study (postgrad) and never left, it's lush!

Is there anywhere else she would rather @cheninblanc ? I must admit Falmouth do always seem to be quite aggressive with their marketing /trying to get students on courses etc so it is surprising they are taking so long.

OP posts:
Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 12:44

DD is adamant she won’t take a year out. But, can someone explain how applying with same grades for next year will be better? Surely same grades, same offers, ie not what she wants?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 19/08/2022 12:47

Benji, with grades in hand, perhaps she might be offered a place on a course requiring a slightly higher grade, because other applicants will be offering predicted grades?
She will also have time to browse all courses available to her with those grades, not just those that made it into clearing.

It was always my and DH fave.

She's an absolute Gavin and Stacey obsessive ... We loved when we visited too. Promised her a couple of cottage weekends with the dog too. I've even been googling dog rescue societies to see if she can volunteer. Can't wait to get the Greyhound on the Gower !

Has he spoken to anyone at Cardiff? If they are in Clearing they might be more flexible than you think. Particularly if he had an interview during the application process or has a back story which shows he underperformed or has other skills. Does he have any grade 6+ music/drama which might help?

Leicester is advertising same points as Cardiff, but does not show how flexible different places are.

Fiddlersgreen · 19/08/2022 12:56

@Monkey2001 yes he spoke to them yesterday and they said told him his grades weren’t high enough.

He didn’t interview and hasn’t really got anything else he can fight with. He worked really hard but he just didn’t get enough

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2022 12:57

Cardiff is in clearing for journalism?? Wow.

ealingwestmum · 19/08/2022 12:59

Hurray! My musical friends in Penarth (who are probably friends of Piccolo) have DC who got involved in stuff at WNO who seem to do a lot of youth outreach stuff. She will at least get to see excellent live opera easily, which would not have been the case in Southampton.
