@Benjispruce4 Oh so blooming brutal! Sheffield Hallam punches above its weight for teaching and research. They do have some spaces right now. They do really well on graduate outcomes and are respected in the field.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 10:01

Thanks @tryingmybest13

tryingmybest13 · 19/08/2022 10:01

Thinking of you@Benjispruce4

HarrietDVane · 19/08/2022 10:03

Thinking of all those still in limbo today. I hope you find resolutions soon.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2022 10:07

I have message Ds with his choices. He can continue with Sussex. Phone Lancaster to ask if they will take him/cancel Sussex etc. or take a year off and get a place for next year. I am sure he will go with Sussex.

Northumberlandlass · 19/08/2022 10:08

@singingstones happy to go on the list
DS/ Accounting/ Northumbria

@Benjispruce4 Northumbria still have places for Sociology. I know it stands in Newcastle Uni’s shadow, but DS loved it & preferred the course. It’s city campus & had a wonderful vibe.

Oblomov22 · 19/08/2022 10:09

@singingstones
Love ❤️ the new list. It's so neat!

Please update me from Oblomov21 to Oblomov22.

Oblomov22 · 19/08/2022 10:13

Northumberland you are in good company here. My ds is doing Accounting too. Plus another poster ds has chosen Bath. Plus many posters, as mums are already accountants, on this thread. (We can talk course topics - FRS 102 & 105 and bore everyone else!).

278Newnames · 19/08/2022 10:15

Great new list @singingstones

278Newnames · 19/08/2022 10:16

@Oblomov22 It's a whole new world for me!! I work in Corporate Governance so there is some overlap.... but I'd welcome any chat about course topics!

@Benjispruce4 I hope you don’t mind me commenting- I haven’t a dc sitting A levels this year mine are last yr and next.

I can understand why your dd wanted York - mine is applying for Sociology and Social Psychology for next year so I totally get it.

My suggestions fwiw having looked at a lot of Sociology courses with dd are either UWE or NTU - they both have vacancies and her grades would be fine (certainly for NTU and I’m sure for UWE). They would give her good courses at good Uni’s in towns which are broadly comparable to York. I would not go for York St Johns - that’s just perpetuating the upset as she’ll be permanently reminded that she didn’t achieve her first choice.

I really wouldn’t prioritise being in the same town as boyfriend - if it’s going to work out it will (my ds and his gf are going to Manchester / Bristol) if it’s going to work out it will and better to make your own friends and develop your own Uni experience.

I know it must seem utterly shit at the moment but there are good options out there. Good luck

Zott · 19/08/2022 10:26

I slept for 11 hours and feel so much better. It’s the most I’ve slept in weeks! Very behind now in real life and the thread.

@Volterra I do feel sorry for the lad who missed out due to his RG hang up. My son is not that proud (and has no reason to be), he grabbed his insurance with both hands but does need to be a bit more happy. I will leave him alone for a bit to get over it in his head. They still are very young and have a lot of maturing to do.

ealingwestmum · 19/08/2022 10:29

I am keeping my fingers crossed that those of you still in limbo have some positive outcomes for your DC today. I am unable to contribute in any knowledgeable way as I am totally clueless to university beyond this point, but there are, as always, great providers of support on here.

Piccolo, a proper shit friend. Schooling is always fair game to some sad others, and yet no one would dream of pulling apart other personal choices one makes. Don't rise to it.

A didn't get to congratulate @craggyrat's DS. Fabulous result, I couldn't keep up with the thread and also forget name changes, but I'm so happy for him (sorry for special interest, given that our DC have shared a past passion!). So pleased it turned out well after his rubbish health this year and impact that's had.

DD returned at 06.00 this morning, scrapping onto a 90 min night bus before London once again is thrown into travel carnage. She has a life-guarding shift late pm, and had stopped drinking early. Since the tragic water incident at Windsor, she's even more conscious of how important being on the ball is, even if pool is quiet.

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 10:29

@KittyMcKitty Thank you for your thoughts and taking the time to post I totally agree.. BF is sensing and actually warned her off Leeds T .She is awake , has been offered a place from YSJ. I am suggesting Sheffield H. She discounted NTU due to its reputation which I have no idea about. She often has to come to her senses in her own time but that’s the one thing we don’t have!!!!

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 10:30

BF is sensible!! Gaaaaa

Cafeconleche · 19/08/2022 10:30

@Benjispruce4 have you looked at UEA? They have sociology in clearing atm - I think it’s BBB, but it might be worth a call? My son turned down his history place at Manchester University 2 years ago to go to Norwich instead because he preferred the course, size, campus and general feel of the place, and has not looked back. So many of my ‘friends’ thought he’d completely lost the plot not going to a RG uni (hello? St. Andrew’s, Bath, Loughborough, Lancaster …) but he knew what he wanted. Plus he’ll spend his 3rd year in the States or Canada. Norwich has a very similar vibe to York (and the university itself was one of the new ‘plate glass’ unis built around the same time) so it might appeal to your DD. Plus they guarantee 1st year accommodation.

Anyway, am keeping everything and more crossed for you - the whole system is utterly ridiculous!

Benjispruce4 · 19/08/2022 10:31

Thanks @Cafeconleche x

singingstones · 19/08/2022 10:36

Thanks for the updates and subtle name changes!

No water here at the moment, our third burst main and loss of supply in less than a year. Welsh Water make a thing of being not for profit which is all very nice, but I would also like a reliable supply if not too much trouble 😡

Nottingham has a reputation for a party town but NTU is great - UWE is really fab. Fwiw my dc are at a selective school where top flight unis are the expectation but UWE and NTU are considered very highly and they send a couple to both every year.

obviously it needs to be her decision but I would encourage her to look again at NTU. UWE would imo give her a town with a similar “vibe” to York.

Volterra · 19/08/2022 10:43

@Benjispruce4 really glad the BF is sensible. Really hard to come after an academic sibling. My DD is the oldest and I think probably has it easier with sibling who is younger rather than older. She has 4 GCSES and still not got maths and half a BTEC but is at Cardiff having gone to U. of S. Wales then Cardiff after year 1.

@Cafeconleche has a good suggestion with UEA. Friend’s DS went there ad his year in US was great.

@Viciouslybashed I have a feeling I have seen something about there being an issue with some BTEC grades being uploaded to UCAS.

craggyrat · 19/08/2022 10:47

Thanks @ealingwestmum ! Your DD had amazing results. Will she swim at uni? DS has been going every other day since back from holiday but just self training as club has really suffered post covid - have lost one pool and had to shrink numbers

ealingwestmum · 19/08/2022 10:57

Sadly not Craggy. Swimming has resulted in so many chronic issues (shoulder and knee) that she just reverts back to more intense pain management when she swims. So, she needs to find something for uni, and thinks getting back into netball may work; we'll see. I hope she can find an alternative, I know you have a slight boy but weight gain has not been kind to mine, but we are now able to talk about it without her spiralling or getting defensive. Such a big part of their lives wasn't it, but good to see yours back in the water again.

icanbewhatiwant · 19/08/2022 11:01

Ok so Ds is now talking about a year off. Then apply for somewhere like Exeter with grades in hand. How does that work. Obviously he needs to reject Sussex. But if we want to go to open days etc how do we apply again? Does he need personal statements etc all over again?

FeltCarrot · 19/08/2022 11:05

@Benjispruce4 My DS got into NTU via clearing, he wanted Nottingham so same city and loved it. Not sure where you get the feeling it has a bad rep. Leeds Trinity is from memory (I was at Leeds Poly back in the day…) the old priests training college. It’s in Horsforth a few miles from Leeds so maybe she needs to bear that in mind.
To all those waiting for accommodation, DD got first choice Leeds, it was also her second choice but for a different course. She was nearly the last of her friends to firm up accomodation, even one of her friends who had Leeds as an insurance found out before her. She got Monty B not her first choice but had an absolute blast there.
