Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Ah well are there any clearing places that look appealing Benji?

Fonty · 15/08/2022 16:32

Hi all. Been off the thread for a few weeks now. Combination of year end stuff at work, new job stuff & DH having a stent fitted. Can’t believe there’s a few of us in that particular situation!
We’re away at moment. Was supposed to be just DH & I but kids ended up coming too…..Back Wed eve.
DS now really anxious & snappy. Has looked at clearing & identified 3 possibles for history. His exams were a bit up & down with a 30 marker history question being a nightmare, so I have no idea how it will go, but since reading the articles he’s not feeling massively hopeful. Really feel for them all.
Going to have several large drinks tonight as our accommodation is doing a bbq! I veer from being calm & positive to feeling utterly sick!

singingstones · 15/08/2022 16:45

Welcome to the stent club Fonty, hope your DH is feeling better. Mine is having some pain and is irritable as anything whilst refusing to phone the unit for advice 😣

I don't blame you! I'm sending myself mad reading all the articles. DD's offer of ABB was contextual so is at the lower end of what would be accepted according to the Discover site. 10% were accepted in the 112-127 range though, which does give me some hope.

Wheresthebeach · 15/08/2022 17:37

Am I the only one who can never find anything on wiwikau? The recent news articles aren't making for happy reading at all. It just feels like our kids are getting the worst of it...I find I'm worrying that for some reason they won't have granted DD special consideration and she'll be given a zero for the exam she missed due to Covid. I'm stopping myself from emailing the school to ask if everything was accepted.

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 17:38

Don’t even know what wwikau is! 🤔

Volterra · 15/08/2022 17:40

This is the advantage of moving just before results day. I am worried about results but have the very pressing matter of the location of the bulk of our undies - thank goodness we packed a few and the washing machine is working 😀

MirandaWest · 15/08/2022 17:40

XH came round to do various things (and see the children). He works for Newcastle University - not an academic or in admissions but his role means he knows an amount about it all. He said that Newcastle isn’t massively oversubscribed so feels that if DS has dropped a grade in maths he should be all right.

I am trying to mostly not think about it all too much….

Monkey2001 · 15/08/2022 17:41

@Wheresthebeach on results day you should see a total mark and your school exams officer will be able to log on to see marks for each paper (and r

Monkey2001 · 15/08/2022 17:41

Will be able to see marks for each paper and each question, so will be able to resolve omissions quickly.

Wheresthebeach · 15/08/2022 17:46

Thanks @Monkey2001. Do you happen to know if schools get told before results day if special consideration has been granted?

NCTDN · 15/08/2022 17:52

Do they def need gcse certificates? Dd never got any, just the paper with the grades on from each exam board.

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2022 18:00

Trouble with WIWIKAU is the odd mansplainer , some really anxious people and the teacher basherzz.

YES!!! You definitely need them in life, DS just needed his for his hospital job. The school should still have them if you did not collect them in Y12.

I don't know as that was not something I was looking for, but when our exams officer logged in she could see a lot of stuff. I guess if they can see the mark for each question there must be a field for extra marks for other stuff so that it adds up to the right total. Which board are you interested in? Edexcel the schools can download the marked scripts instantly and free.

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 18:07

Eek I don’t think DD has GCSE certificates! Maybe she has ! Will ask later when she is home.
I’m wondering why York have asked ABB(128 UCAS) when 45% got in with fewer.
Now I’m questioning the course! Gaaaaaaaa!

horrificbiology · 15/08/2022 18:09

Is anyone nervous after the info the results have gone down ? My DD needs ABB to get into Lancaster, doing biology. Hoping she gets in.

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 18:09

Slightly reassured by check DD1’s course at Durham and they let in 30% with lower than offer.
I think I need to step away from stats and open some wine.😀

Wheresthebeach · 15/08/2022 18:11

@Monkey2001 She took OCR...rather pleased its not AQA! I'll just have to rock and hum quietly in a corner for the next couple of days...

Yes they do. Ds had to scan his and send them off to Leeds a couple of weeks ago. Other places might ask for them on enrolment day.

depending on the school they would either have been posted or they would have needed to be collected from the school. Ds didn’t collect his straight away and school emailed to remind him.

Scroll down to entry requirements. I’m now an expert @singingstones .
Realised why I wasn’t getting stats- I was doing ‘compare’ by saving courses.😏

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 18:11

I am unsure what that means, I never went to Uni so this is all new to me.
