Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

There will be wriggle room on grades for many course and unis :)

ealingwestmum · 15/08/2022 14:36

Btw I hope my fellow language parents know that I wasn’t inferring that MFL or the classicists have easier lives because their entry grade levels may be lower than other courses.

Far from it, but I have withdrawn from arguing with those in RL who clearly like to have a subtle dig, (politics and media bias on STEM vs humanities doesn’t help), not really understanding that students taking language based courses from non native backgrounds have already had an uphill journey at school/college, and should be credited to continue to A level standard and beyond. And even those with native heritage may want to take up professions in their homelands (where they may not have grown up), as opposed to picking an ‘easy’ degree.

I love this thread because there is such a diverse mix of DC, all with their own personal challenges and aspirations. I really hope Thurs and beyond brings positive outcomes for them all so they can navigate their next stages of life. Whether that’s uni, deferral, work, apprenticeship or FE.

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 14:46

Can anybody copy the link for seeing what grades previous students got on specific uni courses? I can’t find it .

singingstones · 15/08/2022 14:47

Hear hear ealing Smile

Ah thanks so much @singingstones ive been scrolling and sending myself blind!

singingstones · 15/08/2022 14:54

Not much wriggle room at DS's firm but his insurance take 45% at BBC or lower so that's encouraging

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 15:04

I can’t find any info on grades just UCAS points which means nothing to me. Where do I need to look please?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 15/08/2022 15:05

@Delphigirl love that uni story, well done your DD!

@singingstones not much wriggle room on DSs firm or insurance 😬

@Seeline thats great thank you! God I don’t know what I’d do without these threads . I should know better with one just graduated. I don’t remember UCAS points being a thing. So DD’s offer of ABB =128 UCAS. Does that mean that so long as her combination of grades match that, she will likely be accepted?

That varies by course and university. Most of the higher tariff ones have grade offers rather than points offers, but more points is good!

For example, for Medicine most want AAA but Liverpool and Leicester will accept A*AB.

If your DD offer is 128 points and you see that 25% of the people on the course ACTUALLY had 112 points, that is encouraging.

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 15:18

Ok thank you 🙏🏻

crazycrofter · 15/08/2022 15:21

Wow, looking at entry info on that link is really interesting! Bath (which dd rejected in the end as they took so long to reply) haven't taken anyone with less than AAA for Psychology. Looks like there's not much wiggle room at Nottingham if dd doesn't meet her ABB offer, as only 7% have got less than that, but there's more at Southampton (her insurance). Good to know, although hopefully it won't be needed.

Dd is really tetchy and argumentative. It doesn't help that I'm feeling a bit stressed about work and our move, and trying to get ds to decide what he wants to do for his birthday on Wednesday! Too much all at once...

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 15:25

I can only see a range not what percentage. Sorry to be a pain. So DD offer grades add up to 128. The range is 112-239. So that’s reassuring but can’t see what percentage.

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 15:27

Also does anyone know how many ucas points coursework grades make? I only ask because a friend said her DD already has x. number of UCAS points from coursework so is relaxed as only needs about 30 more on Thursday( her offer is points based)

Comefromaway · 15/08/2022 15:33

Is she doing a Btec or A levels?

Ds did a Btec and already has a certyain amount of UCAS points as he was awarded an extended certificate at the end of last year (a bit like getting AS levels).

You don't get UCAS points for coursework, only for the qualifications. She might mean that her coursework marks mean that even if she does badly in the exam the percentage for that subject means she will get a certain minimum grade. But remember that coursework can be moderated down.

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 15:36

Friend’s DD is doing a combination of A’ level, Btec so maybe that’s what she means.

singingstones · 15/08/2022 15:38

Is it straight sociology at York benji?

If so 20% got 128-143 (AAB-ABB) but 45% got 112-127 (BBB-BBC). Nobody got in with grades lower than that.

singingstones · 15/08/2022 15:41

This is the breakdown for BA sociology at York

Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?
Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 15:43

Yea thanks @singingstones i really appreciate that.you ⭐️😀!
I can see 112 but not the percentage.
Thank you! That is quite reassuring. I’ve been doing some literal back of an envelope doodles of different combinations. Feel a bit more optimistic.

singingstones · 15/08/2022 15:44

At Chester (I think that's your DD's insurance) 50% got on to the BSc sociology course with fewer than 112 pts (so grades lower than BBC)

MirandaWest · 15/08/2022 15:44

I didn’t think coursework gave a specific amount of ucas points - DS knows what percentage he got for geography NEA hut I thought it just all got added in together when compiling the actual grade.

I am also wondering how EPQ gets factored in - as DS doesn’t know yet what he got for it then can it affect things (ie if he didn’t make his UCAS offer but had an A* EPQ for example?)

MirandaWest · 15/08/2022 15:48

@Benjispruce4 we live very near to York campus - is I think less than 2 miles away. And I went there (although is much bigger now) so if your DD does get in feel free to ask me anything that I might be able to help with 😊 (I’m not much use on night clubs although DS seems to end up in PopWorld quite often 😃)

Benjispruce4 · 15/08/2022 15:52

Ah @MirandaWest thats very kind of you.
@singingstones I think Chester has been dismissed by DD. I think I said before that she messed up on insurance and did it all without us. She had offers from Bath, Leeds, Manchester York and Chester. She regrets Chester but wasn’t in a great place at the time and panicked.
