Thread 36 - Covid Cohort from GCSE 2020 - The Final Countdown to Results Day for Some?

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 09/08/2022 13:40

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.
Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Thanks for indulging @ealingwestmum and @Monkey2001 I'm still being that positive beacon of light and Dd cheerleader AND you've prompted me to book a nice Italian for lunch or dinner on Friday (Dd just has to decide which).

DD says she’s going out in Thursday night , rain or shine. I hope it’s shine!🤞🏻🥴

ealingwestmum · 10/08/2022 17:06

Thanks Benji, I will take another look. I really don’t know where I’ve picked it up from, if I did at all, but I’ve probably been juggling too much and just got fududdled.

Spacerace · 10/08/2022 17:15

I hope it’s ok for me to join, albeit very late in the day. Decorhate kindly pointed me in this direction.
By way of brief introduction my DD hopes to study Management at Warwick, but it’s a tough offer of AstarAA. Her insurance of Bath isn’t much lower unfortunately (AAA).
This is my first time dealing with A levels so I’m starting to read up on clearing, and what that involves. Yikes. Is it too early for gin?

mummyinbeds · 10/08/2022 17:17

So results day, DD isn't around to collect her Core Maths result. I have two options -

  1. Let DS collect her results. He may well forget.
  2. I collect her results and have an excuse to go into school with DS in case his results are as bad as he's predicting. He would be unlikely to go and speak to the staff without a push.

We have her permission for either scenario.

Which option should I go with?

Comefromaway · 10/08/2022 17:23

I’d be responsible for collecting them I think.

Comefromaway · 10/08/2022 17:25

Ds’s band, formed at college have a gig on the Friday so that will be their celebration/commiseration.

One of them is not expecting good news but he’s not off to Uni and has a job/training lined up that isn’t dependent on his results.

the others hopefully will all be ok.

Comefromaway · 10/08/2022 17:27

I don’t think I said by the way. Ds’s firm offer is Leeds Conservatoire & his insurance Salford University.

Volterra · 10/08/2022 17:30

Welcome @Spacerace . DS’s Bath offer is A star AA and I am twitchy about it.
@mummyinbeds I would go I think.

Packers gone and dinner on the way. It has greenery in it as a feeble attempt to offset tomorrow’s official moving supper (Mayo and tomato ketchup accessible in anticipation).

ChristopherTracy · 10/08/2022 17:33

Thanks @Oblomov22 for the tag. I am very nervous, DS increasingly so because of the Nottingham or bust situation he is insisting on (and the need for an A in maths). I will try and find the results day guide - is it in the previous thread (sorry - we have been camping).

Monkey2001 · 10/08/2022 17:41

@mummyinbeds lots of people have parents with them. I am hoping to be allowed in this time. I could not for DS1, GCSEs I was dropping DS2 at a music thing and A levels he didn't want me!

mummyinbeds · 10/08/2022 17:57

@Monkey2001 2020 I sat in the car and DS came out to open his envelope. He swore quite a lot so probably for the best. Last year I waited with DD's friends mum's in the car park while DD took an age to reappear (smiling) I'm not sure what the protocol at their school is as I only have Covid years experience.

Parents certainly weren't involved back in my day (although my mum did take the day off work - it was also my sister's 21st birthday)

Comefromaway · 10/08/2022 18:06

Back in 2018 I took Dd for gcse results as her school was 40 miles away. Lots of boarders so everyone had parents with them. A levels was 2020 so emailed and I don’t think she’d have gone in anyway (no-one was off to Uni as they were on a 3 year performing arts diploma anyway, A levels were just an added extra).

Ds GCSEs in 2020 was covid no parents allowed in but I know from previous years parents often accompanied. I think college is quite different and it will be a wait in the car thing.

Monkey2001 · 10/08/2022 18:10

DS is starting his NHS job on 22nd August. It has been a lengthy process going through the HR process of joining, but all good now and he has even got a pay rise before he starts as lower paid NHS employees got 7.5% in recent pay award, so he will be on £21,730 (pro rata as working 3 days/week) as a school leaver, which seems very good to me! It was mainly about getting good work experience for him, the money is secondary, but nice! Seems strange that a newly qualified nurse with 3 years of academic and practical training only gets £5.3k more.

Benjispruce4 · 10/08/2022 18:10

@ealingwestmum i could be wrong but I remember being surprised when DD2 had to pay one for York this year. There may be something after you’ve accepting but I don’t remembered before. Although it was her first choice so that wasn’t in question.

Benjispruce4 · 10/08/2022 18:13

@Monkey2001 is that ward host by any chance? Niece does it and I was amazed at the rate of pay. It’s £9ph but at the weekend overtime is £18 ph!!! All for giving out meals and water. Unfortunately not taking in at our hospital at the moment.

ProggyMat · 10/08/2022 18:26

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee Thanks for the new thread!

  • *DD, in her words, is ‘shitting it’ about next week and regularly updates me about her friends who are also ‘shitting it’ I’ve also had updates about her dreams about ‘Black Thursday’ which perhaps maybe more about the impending weather rather than the apocalypse? I’m ‘shitting myself’ that she ends up in her insurance and the bun fight for what is or is not left accommodation wise and wishing she’d chosen Edinburgh instead!
CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 10/08/2022 18:32

Dd has been having dreams about a white frog with giant hands and keeps seeing a devil with purple eyes and horns in her room when she wakes up @ProggyMat !

She has also just come downstairs panicking about some nonsense Telegraph article 'Govt says students need a Plan B' or somesuch🙄then cried at the Lyrics to 'landslide' not five mins later.

I think it's going to be a long week all.

DS's band has a gig on Saturday - is part of a music festival at local pub. Plus my sister and her husband are coming up to see it. So am hoping all will be at least mostly cheerful.

One of the band is in year 12, the other two are also year 13 and getting A Level results but neither are at least going to university next year (not sure if they are intending to at all) so at least that takes some pressure off things.

I haven't yet had nightmares about next Thursday but there's time...

Seeline · 10/08/2022 19:05

I had a nightmare about Thursday and woke up in a real panic. I can't for the life of me remember any of the details though 😆

ProggyMat · 10/08/2022 19:40

@CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee I studied dreams as part of one of my modules as an undergraduate - can remember my final exam for that module even now but that’s probably because I’d drank a can of Red Bull prior to to the exam and spent about 15 minutes just staring at the first of 3 essays questions -which was on dreams - before I started to write owt down!
I spent the evening crying thinking in that exam I’d blown the classification I wanted to achieve
Stroll on next Thursday 👍🏼

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 10/08/2022 20:29

Oh gosh @ProggyMat sounds traumatic!

Someone has posted on WIWIKAU FB group that their son has been given an offer and it seems to be causing a bit of consternation! I'm sure when the poster gets back they'll get to bottom of it 😂
