...water

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Just got in from my return trip to Bristol - exhausted 😁 Good job I went by myself as the car was full to bursting with all DSs uni stuff - I can't believe how much he has accumulated this year. It's now all over the living room floor. I'm dreading starting to get uni stuff for DDs - I'm not sure where it is going to go!!

Takeittotheboss · 27/06/2022 19:42

My DS is a boarder so won't be going into school, although there are always pictures of those who do. Amazingly they're always the ones with fantastic grades heading to Harvard or Oxbridge for obscure courses with rowing😂! I assume they get the call the night before🤔

EwwSprouts · 27/06/2022 19:43

Questions I have asked DS this evening;
What time does prom start?
How are you getting there?
Do we need to collect you?
How much is it?
Got a full house of 'Don't know'. It's on Wednesday and he hasn't paid but is certain he's going. He hasn't bothered to ask a friend even now. [shrug}

EwwSprouts · 27/06/2022 19:48

DS will go into school for results. They have staff on hand for if things go pear shaped. Let's hope nobody needs their support.

272Newnames · 27/06/2022 20:07

@EwwSprouts DS's prom is on Thursday. I mentioned earlier that he needed to sort who he was going with and what he was wearing. He did the usual yeah yeah, until I said well it is on Thursday! "Is it??" was the response 🙄

I asked him if his suit was clean, "I think so". Bearing in mind last time he wore it he was sick...Grin To be fair I think the suit was well avoided as we threw the shirt out to avoid having to clean it up but the suit seemed ok, not sure he is fully certain of that though...

EwwSprouts · 27/06/2022 20:17

@272Newnames So glad it's not just in this house.

mummyinbeds · 27/06/2022 20:29

@EwwSprouts I've asked the same questions with the same responses. I do know it's paid for because I did that bit when he asked/told me to 5 minutes before the deadline.

He starts his summer job the morning after the prom so hopefully it won't be too messy.

icanbewhatiwant · 27/06/2022 20:41

Ds's prom is Thursday. I'm sure I'll be taking him and collecting him. I thought it was expensive at £47
I didn't realise it was so soon and he'd only got an old pair of trainers for his feet. He said he wanted black suede shoes. I found a pair half price on the Clarke's website. I hope they fit because I'm guessing shoe size! I did check it was free return before I ordered. I also hope they arrive on time.

Ds2 likes clothes shopping. My other 2 ds's hate it. It's a shame nowhere round here seems to cater for the small man. ASOS seems to be best size wise. But quality isn't great.

Last exam for Ds tomorrow.

scabby1 · 27/06/2022 21:00

@pangolinfan and @mummyinbeds, sorry for the late response.
I thought I’d be the only one here with DC’s in consecutive school years. (Mine are both summer babies to boot 😂).
Dd is the spreadsheet one. She is the complete opposite of her brother, who is so laid back he’s practically horizontal.
@mummyinbeds - Law at Nottingham is def on her shortlist. (I studied law there many moons ago and loved it). Can I ask when your DS did the LNAT? It makes me very nervous that DD won’t know her LNAT score when submitting her UCAS form.To be safe, I think she should apply to only 2 LNAT uni’s, but her shortlist is almost exclusively LNAT ones 😬

ExtremelyDedicated · 27/06/2022 21:19

Both of mine take the low maintenance approach to clothes/appearance. I took DS to buy his y11 prom suit in Slaters, where the service was excellent, we were in and out in 20 mins and it still fits. For DD, y11 this year, I knew she wouldn’t want to spend a lot of time on it either so I booked her a slot at a local dress boutique with 1:1 fitting which worked a treat, she tried on about 10 dresses but that was the only shop we had to go to. It’s full length and she’s wearing trainers under it. She’s doing her own hair, no nails as she bites them, borrowing some of my jewellery and own make-up.

We had a boastful mum in primary school, her DC were of course THE brightest. I haven’t seen her or her DC for years now but a friend told me recently that moved as far away as he could get and never comes back, one is working in a local takeaway and sleeping with the manager and the other is best known for trading vapes at school. Perhaps she’s not so boastful now.

EwwSprouts · 27/06/2022 21:26

@mummyinbeds The next morning! A bold plan.

mummyinbeds · 27/06/2022 22:06

@scabby1 two spring babies here - I must have been mad 😂

DS did the LNAT in mid September with his usual lack of planning and practice approach. I read somewhere that Nottingham have dropped that requirement for next year but don't take my word for that.

@EwwSprouts the start date for the job was not negotiable unfortunately. I hope he doesn't throw up during the induction.

Heifer · 27/06/2022 22:13

Good luck to your DS for tomorrow @icanbewhatiwant - just his to go and we are all finished.

DD has been mostly either partying or sleeping. We had a lovely time yesterday in Liverpool shopping for clothes for her holiday (Thursday). She told me that she hoped I would visit her at uni to taker her shopping and buy lunch :-)

EwwSprouts · 27/06/2022 22:31

Yes good luck to the last man standing @icanbewhatiwant

@Heifer that sounds lovely.

pangolinfan · 27/06/2022 23:05

Yes @scabby1 left it late and had to crack on - a 15 month gap between DD and DS, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Monkey2001 · 27/06/2022 23:27

@icanbewhatiwant hope your laid back DS is taking the VERY late finish in his stride. Must be hard when everyone else is all done.

Volterra · 28/06/2022 06:33

Good luck to DS @icanbewhatiwant 🍀🍀Freedom awaits.

@crazycrofter how is your move going ? Our buyers are apparently expecting mortgage offer by end of next week, really really hope they are right. Plan is to exchange as soon as we can then complete the Monday of results week when ours becomes fully available .We’d be moving in the previous Friday. Feeling a bit scary as we haven’t moved for 20 years and feel a bit in limbo. Will be coming from a fairly modern house to a Victorian one so will be feel very different.

crazycrofter · 28/06/2022 07:53

Sounds promising @volterra but until the mortgage offer arrives you feel like anything could happen don’t you! Fingers crossed for you! This is our fourth move in 20 years and I hate the process! It will take you a while to settle in but hope it works out for you. We’ve heard absolutely nothing from buyer, so I’m going to ring the solicitor today. I’m currently trying to find somewhere to live between completing and new build being ready in November, but it’s not easy!

crazycrofter · 28/06/2022 07:53

@icanbewhatiwant good luck for ds’ last exam!

Volterra · 28/06/2022 08:02

@crazycrofter yes absolutely this, so worried they won’t get mortgage again- won’t relax until we have exchanged. This is the 4th house DD (23) has lived in but the first for DS so we are very out of practice! Fingers crossed all well with your buyers. I can imagine how hard it is to find somewhere temporary at the moment, good luck. Any top moving tips?

Oblomov22 · 28/06/2022 08:02

icanbe Good Luck ☘️

craggyrat · 28/06/2022 08:10

@icanbewhatiwant - hope the last exam goes really well

ealingwestmum · 28/06/2022 08:17

We’re all thinking of your DS2 today ican. Go knock it out the park young man :)

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/06/2022 08:41

Good luck to your DS today @icanbewhatiwant !

crazycrofter · 28/06/2022 09:30

@volterra we have been totally disorganised every time we've moved so no useful tips really 😂We've always moved ourselves too, with a hired van, which is quite stressful... But you get through it one way or another!
