...water

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Although I couldn’t and wouldn’t let it happen as I am such a rule follower, I can see why people have been tempted to pick a week of the worst exams to be ill in. Totally wrong though.

Heifer · 24/06/2022 08:01

@craggyrat Hope your DS feels better soon and gets out there and has some fun.

@mango0 Hope your DD made contact and got home ok. I do prompt DD to tell me where she is (roughly) and if she will be coming home or not.

@crazycrofter Agree re Bristol, I love it there but was relieved when DD decided it was too far away (from friends not us)... If we were still living in Swindon she would definitely have applied for Bristol & Bath so phew...

Thanks re advice re spending money abroad, we haven't been very often since having DD so really not up to date and I like having lots of wallets with the money shared out so won't be changing soon :-)

Good luck to all with exams today. DD has Biology P3 and despite having a whole week since her last, she admitted last night that should could have done with another day..... She usually likes P3 and does well on the Essay but it will depend on the question options.. Turns out that one subject wasn't so much as revised but learnt the other night - they did it very last minute in class and DD felt rushed so of course left it right until the last topic to revise (learn). That will be because she has a very good short term memory and she will think it's better to do it last and just before the exam rather than earlier and often...

After the exams she has to hand in school landyard and any texts books (no way will she even think about that before the exam so guess she will go into school next week with them). Then off to the pub at lunch time, a fancy dress party this evening and then off clubbing in Liverpool even later... oh boy.

Isthisjustnormal · 24/06/2022 08:07

Oh @craggyrat , how frustrating. Do hope he’s feeling better soon but so gutting to be missing out on the end of exam fun planned.
Ds finishes today and dd has her last exam today. It doesn’t feel
real to be honest.

mummyinbeds · 24/06/2022 08:19

DS is stomping round the house muttering in French. Must be his last exam today 😁

craggyrat · 24/06/2022 08:23

Thanks for all the good wishes - this thread moves fast! He is feeling a bit better this morning but struggles with pain when sat up or walking downstairs so definitely couldn’t concentrate on 2 hours of French. When I arrived at hospital yesterday he was on IV antibiotics reading his French notes for today. He is not happy at missing it. He says he can lie down and do some pre reading he has been sent for Uni this morning. I think he has forgotten how to relax.

Still not sure what will happen re holiday. It’s with us to the. Canaries. Insurance company have said he would be covered in case he has issues but I’m very dubious about going. And am feeling a bit off myself today. Probably got COVID now knowing our luck at the moment.

best of luck for exams today for everyone.

NCTDN · 24/06/2022 08:25

Good luck for all exams today. Is there sometime on here whose exams carry on into next week?

singingstones · 24/06/2022 08:30

Good luck today everyone 🍀
DS totally exhausted now after two big nights of celebrating. We are going to do some life admin today while he recovers Smile

DD loved her college taster day so big phew there. She has had a few wobbles about whether she's making the right decision, as all of her friends are staying at school for sixth form. Her mind was pretty much made up on the last day of exams when the Y11s were asked to leave their ties on their desks if they didn't mind, to add to the school's collection of spares (Y12 has a different tie). So she did and then as she walked out of school for the very last time, she was told off for not wearing a tie. She said she was feeling a bit nostalgic up to that point! The more relaxed feel of college will suit her much better I think 🤞

EwwSprouts · 24/06/2022 08:30

@craggyrat Hope the antibiotics are starting to take effect. What bad timing. I hope the rest of his summer makes up for this miserable patch.

Another here who wouldn't allow fake illness. DS knows not to even ask as I've worked in professional standards.

Good luck to everyone on this final day of exams. Sending special 🍀to all who have been on the biology applications journey.

DS is going to the pub afterwards and then overnight at a friend's. I've got to get him to a cricket match tomorrow. Hope he's bright eyed and bushy tailed!

mango0 · 24/06/2022 08:33

@Heifer I lasted about another half an hour after I posted before texting her! She was in the park. I then text again at twenty to 11 to say I think she should come because it was almost dark, and she did to be fair. I've reminded her this morning that I would like to know where she is and a rough idea of when she'll be home.

DD is up and feeling very strange this morning at the prospect of having nothing to do! It is quite surreal. I'll give her a day or so before I point out the piles and piles of papers in her room that need sorting, and that she really could do with a job for over the summer.

Is today the last day for exams then, or are there still some next week?

Good luck to all with exams today!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/06/2022 08:39

Good luck to the Biology squad today and the French squad (I think that's all today but good luck for anyone I have missed too!).

DS had a terrible nights sleep, probably worrying, and looks like a zombie this morning. He did quite a bit of revision yesterday so I'm hoping it's going to pay off today. Fingers crossed! Then he's celebrating, he has told me not to expect to see him before Sunday. 😮😮

Volterra · 24/06/2022 08:53

Good luck to them today 🍀🍀
@craggyrat Imam so sorry to hear about your DS, poor lad. I hope they can sort him out very soon.

DS and DH both haven’t stirred yet after packing and long drive yesterday, DS looked knackered then DH couldn’t sleep as wanted to know election results. DS can have a few days rest then help with major pre move sort.

Seeline · 24/06/2022 09:01

Just back from my last ever school run. The traffic was atrocious so I am celebrating rather than feeling a bit nostalgic over the passing of another milestone!

DD was similarly unprepared for the bio exam having had a week to prep - she said she felt as though she really didn't care anymore, so I hope she has done enough. Hers is only 90 mins and I don't think she has an essay, although she hasn't actually done a paper 3 before so could have just missed that bit of news!

Good luck to all!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/06/2022 09:05

NO, DS has never done a paper 3 before either Seeline, he has the same exam fatigue now. Paper 3 is about practicals / experiments and they don't seem to have done any of that as questions in their mocks.

pangolinfan · 24/06/2022 09:18

Grateful lurker here who wanted to thank everyone for a very supportive thread (which I only discovered about 10 days ago). DD has Bio paper 3 today (she has never done one either because school exams were always unified papers) and has struggled to keep on it during the tail end of the exam season this week, with lots of friends already finished. Looking forward to a final laconic "it was ok" or (at best) "it was fine" message before she heads to the pub. Well done all of us (and our young people of course) and here's to a few weeks of calm before we gear up for results.

Heifer · 24/06/2022 09:40

Now you've got me thinking perhaps it's my DD that hasn't done a Biology P3 before! ;-) She is doing AQA - what about your DD/DS? Her exam is 2 hrs (2.5 as she gets extra time, I'm hoping it's different to yours and DD does in fact has an essay element.

There is definitely 1 posting who DS has a RE paper next week but I think that's all - hope he can keep revising over the weekend and not give in to celebrate with friends etc...

Heifer · 24/06/2022 09:49

Sorry to say a postingt -I mean to tag @icanbewhatiwant as it's your DS with an exam on 28th June.. Hope he is ok.

Zebracat · 24/06/2022 09:50

ComputerScience also today. I really hope she doesn’t have to resit. I can cope with helping to revise History and Psychology but Computer Science makes me itch all over. So so dull.

Heifer · 24/06/2022 09:51

Hi @pangolinfan it's a great thread isn't it. I feel very lucky to have seen it back in Yr10.

Good luck to your DD this morning - What is she hoping to do next?

Heifer · 24/06/2022 09:54

@Zebracat I know exactly what you mean - I was find with helping with Psychology, PE and Core Maths but Biology did me in! Not dull but so much to listen to and try to understand. I gave up trying to fake my understanding and just told her to tell me as though she was talking to her Dad and I would just pretend to get it..

With any luck Zebra she will have been fine and gets the results she needs.

pangolinfan · 24/06/2022 09:59

Economics and Politics (at Edinburgh or Leeds). Biology a bit of an outlier, subject wise!

Volterra · 24/06/2022 10:02

Welcome @pangolinfan ! Good luck you your DD this morning 🍀

272Newnames · 24/06/2022 10:04

@craggyrat I was talking about your DS and his appendix to DH last night and he reminded me that he had appendicitis and his appendix out during his O Levels, but they sent an invigilator and made him sit a couple of papers while he was in the hospital! I thought that was quite harsh.

icanbewhatiwant · 24/06/2022 10:06

@Heifer yes Ds has RS exam Tuesday next week. He's been doing a lot of shouting on his Xbox to his mates the past few days. He is going in for RS lesson today I just asked if he's revising, he said he will do it Monday. So apart from the exam Tuesday I think today is the last day he will go in for a lesson.

craggyrat · 24/06/2022 10:26

@272Newnames wow that was harsh for your DH. I was an O Level sitter as well and it doesn’t surprise me to be honest! My DB was sent to school by my parents in the 70s as they didn’t believe he was ill - just before his appendix burst and he was in hospital for a couple of weeks….

welcome @pangolinfan

ExtremelyDedicated · 24/06/2022 10:28

@singingstones my DD has been wavering between 6th form and college too, she’s 95% college at the moment but has taster days for both next week. I’m team college - her 6th form is too small and while the teachers are amazing there’s more to 6th form life than the academics and I’m also impressed with the college.

@craggyrat sorry to hear about the ongoing appendix troubles for DS and tha bad timing for holiday as well as exam

@pangolinfan welcome, these are lovely threads, I lurked more than posted for the first couple of years
