...water

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

I have a website address for last minute tests that found us one when all the paid for apps I had failed, it's also helped two other people. Happy to DM anyone with it but don't want to put it out in public in case it gets inundated by lurkers. 😂

ProggyMat · 23/06/2022 10:20

@Horace 😱
Mind you, two of DDs friends are also holding offers for the same college as your DS and DD is very jealous of the things they have planned!
Pre- reading aint one of ‘em!
Keeping everything crossed for your DS🍀- not long now and you’ll ‘be out the other side’!

Good luck to all still sitting exams. My DS has gone awol on yhe communication front......too busy packing for end of term trip🏖✈

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/06/2022 11:21

Anyone else’s DC take GCSE AQA combined science higher physics paper 2 this morning?
Apparently, AQA included a question(s) on a topic the AI stated would NOT be assessed (braking and reaction times).

Nice way to finish the science exams!

icanbewhatiwant · 23/06/2022 11:37

@Seeline we used driving test now app. You need to have a test booked somewhere already. Then put it on auto book. Otherwise when you get a notification of a test, by the time you've opened the app. the test is gone.

Fiddlersgreen · 23/06/2022 11:49

@Heifer we opened an account with Metro bank as they don’t charge to use your card abroad. We then take a mixture of cash and use the card. I assume more places will take card now since the pandemic?

@Alsoplayspiccolo yes my DS took that exam, i haven’t heard from him yet though. They did that with one of the other science exams too. Physics is his weakest subject

Oblomov22 · 23/06/2022 12:34

Seeline we used driving test cancellations now. You have to have a test booked (anywhere you can get). Then you specify 2 or 3 preferred locations.

Oh dear. It's been a bit of a farce. You'd think it wouldn't get that hard to check the paler against the advance info. Dd has AQA exams in 2 other subjects on friday

HibiscusIsland · 23/06/2022 13:05

Wouldn't be that hard to check the paper

Thanks @Fiddlersgreen will take a look.

What is anyone else's DD/DS doing re spending money abroad in the summer? DD only currently has a normal Natwest bank account (will convert to student account later), does anyone use the top up cards? or just use cash? especially interested in how your children spend their money abroad as likeley to be different to us :-) (well me anyway) ;-)

272Newnames · 23/06/2022 14:04

DS is now finished 😊😊😊

He is exhausted. Some of his friends were in Wetherspoons earlier but he said he just wanted to chill and eat at home before going out. He was eating a KFC I went to get him and had a beer with it! He is currently lying on his bed chilling. I’m sure he’ll be out later.

i feel relieved all is over, I wanted to go out and eat with DH this evening and have a couple of drinks ourselves but he has had dental work today so can’t eat properly 😬

Good luck to those still hanging in there!

Delphigirl · 23/06/2022 14:04

Oh dear. After 2 good Chem papers DS didn’t enjoy paper 3. He said last night that he had never done well on paper 3 and he knew lots of people who claimed to have covid to get out of papers this year 😱. I said he was better than that and he reluctantly agreed. He has since told my DH that he wishes he hadn’t taken it, but he has been good enough not to say that to me. I’m afraid I simply couldn’t countenance what seems to me to be akin to cheating, but I can sense and understand his frustration if everyone else is doing it.

hey ho - last paper tomorrow.

Monzo cards are great

272Newnames · 23/06/2022 14:06

Re holiday money, elder DS got a revolut card which you have to preload but can change money into different currencies easily. I haven’t looked I to it myself but he said it works well.

Personally we use a Halifax clarity credit card for all expenditure abroad.

ealingwestmum · 23/06/2022 14:08

Monzo here too.

crazycrofter · 23/06/2022 14:29

@Alsoplayspiccolo ds did that paper but didn't seem to notice! Hopefully they'll do what they did on the earlier single Science paper and give them all full marks on that question.

Dd still hasn't got her passport so probably won't be going abroad this summer, unless it arrives soon. But the spending money issue hadn't occurred to me... We never go abroad!

ProggyMat · 23/06/2022 14:33

Weighed in, weighed in! 😂

DD very happy with her last paper and even more so to be finished
Sending positive vibes to all for final papers! 🍀

DD has a Monzo card for her holiday to Greece.

ExtremelyDedicated · 23/06/2022 14:33

We use the Halifax Clarity card too but the DCs don’t have them, I would probably look at Revolut for them if they were going.

DS finished yesterday and has stayed at school, they are doing some organised fun things in their group. He rang this morning and said the last exam yesterday went well (Edexcel History Evolution of British Warfare).

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2022 14:42

DS1 told me he has a Monzo card. I just nodded and smiled....no idea !

Volterra · 23/06/2022 15:08

Sorry that last Chemistry was hard @Delphigirl . That’s really not good hearing people were saying that to get out of papers. Good luck to him for tomorrow.

DS is now finished and waiting for DH to appear. They can’t get into accommodation until later so a bit of time to get food before starting to pack.

mummyinbeds · 23/06/2022 15:09

Does anyone know about cards for 17 year olds that can be used in Africa? Monzo is MasterCard which is apparently no good. Resolut doesn't allow under 18's to use abroad. She can't get currency before she gets there and there is no bank/ATM in the village she is staying in.

DS's passport arrived today - took about 10 days. He's planning a trip to wherever the girls in his group of friends tell him. He has a Monzo card and the girls will look after him 😂

craggyrat · 23/06/2022 15:54

Hi all - not been on for ages for various reasons. I was Esther Frewen but couldn’t get that name to work now.

DS just about survived A levels so far until this morning. Last exam is tomorrow but he has spent today at hospital with suspected appendicitis - again. Some may remember he was admitted last autumn for same thing. Anyway he has had all day on IV antibiotics and now has to rest at home for 7 days with home antibiotics which means no exam tomorrow and no holiday abroad next week am guessing… need to speak to insurance company.

hope everyone is okay - don’t think I can work through missing months of posts!!
