...water

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Good luck everyone. DS doesn’t have any exams today but is planning to go into school to take thank you cards to his teachers 😊 He was writing them last night and did drafts on his phone first which I found rather sweet (didn’t tell him that though!)

Thanks all for the supportive messages today and last night. I am feeling a bit calmer now, we went through the course specs and DS thinks the alternative one will be OK, there is an open day coming up so we will go to that and talk it over with them then. He’s gone back to school now. Last exam on Weds but they have some fun stuff planned for this week.

In other news DD had a college open day yesterday and has finally decided to go there instead of staying at school. The place has really impressed us both, in terms of the staff, the setup, the facilities and the location is easy enough to get to too. Just got to decide subjects now, it’s history, biology and one from psychology or chemistry. Last GCSE exam for her tomorrow.

Better news all round!

English lit A level and GCSE chemistry here today.

Good luck, everyone!

Seeline · 20/06/2022 08:01

Good luck to all today.

DD gave herself the weekend off - nothing until last bio paper on Friday, and that's only 1hr30. Nearly there, and then the wait for results......

Heifer · 20/06/2022 08:10

Good luck for exams today - feels odd as DD doesn't have 1 until Friday.

icanbewhatiwant · 20/06/2022 08:10

Good luck to dc's with exams. Ds doesn't have any this week. But apparently is going in every day for RS lessons. He drives himself so I expect he will just go in for the lesson and lunchtime. He likes to have a kick about on the field with mates.

Ds1 should be boarding his flight to USA any minute now. I shall be worried the next 3 weeks. But I'm sure he will have a great time. The mess left at home from his uni house is unbelievable. I can't walk in his room. Several bags downstairs and his car has quite a bit in too 🙈

Horace123 · 20/06/2022 08:43

Hi everyone - I thought I'd lost you all as for some reason I couldn't find the new thread. I have only had time to skim read everything. Shimy - I didn't see details of why you briefly left but very glad you are back. Proggy - so glad the Greek paper went well for DD. Extremely - so pleased it sounds like better news for the alternative course although very frustrating that this has happened.

Best of luck to all those with exams this week - although DS finished over a month ago we are still going with GCSEs so have every sympathy with the A levellers who haven't finished yet. DS gets results in just over two weeks (gulp) - they come out mid afternoon which I think is a bit mean although hopefully UCAS will update in the morning.

I can't remember who has DC doing medicine (Monkey?) but have a friend with a DC who didn't get any offers but one came through last week from a London university who must now be on to the waiting list. So there is hope.

@Wheresthebeach Just saw your post with the link to the Guardian article. Agree it has been so difficult for our cohort but just to clarify I think (am v happy to be corrected though) that IB kids have to wait for A level results before going to clearing. DS gets his IB results early July but if he misses the grades for this offers I think he can only do anything about it when the A level results come out. Obviously there is an advantage in terms of having time to think of strategy, getting to grips with how clearing works etc but don't think there is an advantage in getting places. I will be sure to post on results day about how UCAS updates and what information they include (rather hoping DS gets his results but maybe there is general information about clearing etc).

mummyinbeds · 20/06/2022 09:31

Law this afternoon for DS. His class didn't finish the syllabus for this paper, he's never answered any questions on the content, never mind sat a mock of any kind. He's currently asleep so obviously not stressing too much.

Wheresthebeach · 20/06/2022 11:30

DD has Covid. Missing chemistry today. She’s gutted. Fingers crossed she makes the exams end of week. She got a sore throat and aches on Friday.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 20/06/2022 11:37

@Wheresthebeach hope she is ok - will she have to take it later or if she manages to sit paper 3 will they take an average mark? Poor kids - they have been put through the mill.
I think the 16-24 year olds ( 16 in 2020) have had it rough.

Delphigirl · 20/06/2022 12:05

Oh I’m really sorry @Wheresthebeach . What bad luck. I hope she gets better soon… they will work out her mark based on the paper(s) she does sit so I hope she is feeling ok about that.

ealingwestmum · 20/06/2022 12:34

Oh that’s horrible timing for her Wheresthebeach, but hopefully she’s up and running for the end of week exam and has done more than enough on the aggregate papers.

crazycrofter · 20/06/2022 12:43

Oh no @Wheresthebeach poor dd 😢 How did she feel the first chemistry paper went?

Isthisjustnormal · 20/06/2022 12:46

Oh no,@Wheresthebeach : how is she feeling?

singingstones · 20/06/2022 12:47

Horace I think you may be able to enter clearing on 5 July.. (although hoping it won't be an issue obvs)

Sorry to hear that @Wheresthebeach what a pain. Hope her aggregate will do the job and that she feels better soon

Horace123 · 20/06/2022 12:54

singing - Thank you! As you say, hope we won't need it but good to know. Wheresthebeach - so sorry about DD's covid.

Fiddlersgreen · 20/06/2022 12:55

DS2 said todays GCSE chemistry was the hardest exam yet

Fiddlersgreen · 20/06/2022 12:55

@Wheresthebeach sorry to hear about DDs covid, hope she recovers very soon

ExtremelyDedicated · 20/06/2022 13:07

Fiddlersgreen · 20/06/2022 12:55

DS2 said todays GCSE chemistry was the hardest exam yet

Eeek, maybe I'd better message DD and see what she thought.

Horace123 · 20/06/2022 13:18

Fiddlers - oh dear. Was it triple or combined and which board? Waiting for DD to come home to tell me what she thought.

Monkey2001 · 20/06/2022 13:21

@Wheresthebeach sorry to hear DD has Covid, hope the paper this week is not her best one. An invigilator I saw socially on Saturday said there was talk of schools advising their students to claim Covid to miss their worst papers!!!

@mummyinbeds a mum from our school said they realised on Friday that they had missed half the syllabus for the last paper so frantic new learning was happening over the weekend! 😬

Wheresthebeach · 20/06/2022 13:35

@Monkey2001 yes her best. That rumour fills me with horror.
