Thread 33 - Lovely Jubbly Jubilee Break, then back to Exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 27/05/2022 17:10

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board. Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future?

Ugh I’m terrified that will happen to ds! He’s not a great believer in rules at the best of times and has form for thinking something will be absolutely fine/no one cares etc and then being surprised when he ends up in huge trouble for it! I have drummed the phone in exam thing into him though

Delphigirl · 05/06/2022 20:03

@heifer don’t worry - DS is aqa biology on Thursday too and no exam on Monday, don’t panic!
geography on Wed for him. He had a ‘day off’ today… hmmm.

KingscoteStaff · 05/06/2022 20:09

DD also has Biology 1 on Thursday.

She's head down for Donne, Eliot and Hardy on Tuesday morning at the moment.

EwwSprouts · 05/06/2022 20:14

Maths on Tuesday, biology Thursday and physics Friday.

Wishing everyone the best of luck.

Monkey2001 · 05/06/2022 20:33

@Heifer and @sazzy5 if you have Netflix has your DC see The English Game? About football and covers some themes in AQA PE. Recommended light revision!

mummyinbeds · 05/06/2022 20:39

Law tomorrow and politics on Thursday for DS. Yr 12 DD has Level 3 Core Maths on Wednesday.

scabby1 · 05/06/2022 22:03

Maths & Geography on Tuesday (clash, Ds will do Geography first, then into isolation until he sits Maths), then Politics on Thursday.

ExtremelyDedicated · 05/06/2022 22:13

I saw the thread about phones in exams too, asked DD y11 what she is doing with hers and she said she is leaving her blazer at home so she doesn't have any pockets and has to put it in her bag which stays in her locker. Forgot to check with DS before dropping him back at boarding tonight but will no doubt speak to him before Friday which is when his next exam is (history). Just one more history paper after that and he's done. I helped him send the orders for the DSA stuff yesterday, sounds as though different places do it differently. We have also applied for an adult social care assessment for him in case he needs support for living stuff at uni which is outside the remit of DSA.

I have dipped in and out of the Jubilee stuff, we were out last night so I watched the concert this morning and we had a street Jubilee picnic this afternoon which was nice (we have a grassy area big enough for a gathering). It's been nice us all having 4 days off together.

22Newnames · 05/06/2022 22:24

Have loved watching some of the jubilee celebrations. I am not a massive royalist but do have a soft spot for the Queen. I thought the Paddington sketch was genius!

DS has maths on Tuesday, further maths on Wednesday (both AQA) and OCR Physics on Friday. slightly nervous about the maths and further maths papers after the first AQA further maths paper last week being so tough.

DS is working hard but seems to have a decent balance between work and relaxation. Fingers crossed it all pays off.

singingstones · 05/06/2022 23:05

He's doing WJEC biology Heifer, yes I thought they coordinated them too. But then again there are separate AS exams here for Y12 so maybe those match up with yours. DS has his other bio paper a week on Friday.

Here's the thread about the DD and the phone - checked with DS and he told me he keeps his in his pocket at which I nearly spontaneously combusted. He has promised not to do that now.

Will DD likely be penalised for this www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4562662-will-dd-likely-be-penalised-for-this

ealingwestmum · 06/06/2022 07:00

Sounds like very heave weeks for most here, best of luck to all your DC on holding their nerve.

Same clash as NCT here with Tuesday’s Spanish/English Lit, Maths on Weds and History on Fri. And we had a houseful of US family guests over the weekend and here with us rest of week.

My FIL was diagnosed with MND 5 weeks ago, given up to 3 years. But he suffered collapsed lungs on Friday, and passed yesterday. DD was totally devastated; had been putting off seeing them due to studies, and now racked with guilt, though my MIL has been a superstar, very stoic.

ExtremelyDedicated · 06/06/2022 07:02

I'm sorry to hear that Ealing, what a shock Flowers

Volterra · 06/06/2022 07:31

I am so sorry Ealing, what a huge shock 💐 Your poor DD 😓How is your DH holding up?

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 06/06/2022 07:32

That's so sad @ealingwestmum please accept my thoughts , hope Dd can be OK. As much as ok is.

NCTDN · 06/06/2022 07:36

Sorry to hear that Ealing. Everything gets put on hold doesn't it? I'm bothered this clash on Tuesday and then another exam the following morning. I really think they should be allowed to be outside getting some fresh air, instead of sitting inside with a stranger stressing about the next exam. I know there's nothing that can be done.
Did anyone read the thread on wiwikau with the school closed today so exam being carried over until tomorrow even though the rest of England are doing it today?

handmademitlove · 06/06/2022 07:43

My Dd has been ill with a vomiting bug all night. We are hoping it will be short lived and she will be fine for her next exam on Tuesday afternoon. Anyone know what happens if she isn't? Have emailed school just in case...

NCTDN · 06/06/2022 07:55

Dd has had Covid over half term so I looked into what happened for that. I guess the same would apply?

It says
You should speak to your school, college, or exam centre, who can provide you with a self-certification form to complete and tell you if there is anything else you need to
do. As your exams have been spaced by at least ten days you will be able to receive
A-level grades based on the other components completed, as you are considered to have an acceptable reason for missing the exam.

Oblomov22 · 06/06/2022 07:59

Oh dear Ealing. Poor dd. Hope she realised she is guilty of nothing, just circumstances.

Poor dd handmade. Hope she feels better by tomorrow.

ProggyMat · 06/06/2022 08:10

Good luck to all sitting exams today! 🍀
DD has Ancient History ( Roman) this morning then will be in isolation before Latin prose and comprehension (clash).
💐@ealingwestmum

Volterra · 06/06/2022 08:16

Good luck to everyone today 🍀
Ealing maybe have a look at her firm choice and see if there is an extenuating circumstances form? I think school will be able to apply for mitigating circumstances in the exams most likely.

mango0 · 06/06/2022 08:17

I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL @ealingwestmum, what a shock that must have been for everyone. Your poor DD, I'm sure her grandfather would have been feeling incredibly proud of all of her hard work rather than upset that she hadn't visited recently.

I hope your DD is feeling better quickly @handmademitlove!

DD has English Language paper 2 this afternoon, after not feeling very positive about paper 1 she's done a fair bit of revision this last week. She's complaining of not feeling well this morning, nauseous, I'm hoping it's just nerves. She's eaten breakfast and has left for school, so it can't be too bad. Her school still wants them in for lessons as usual until they've completed their exams in that subject, she has double English this morning. Most of the students aren't actually going in from what she says, but DD is definitely a rule follower!

Good luck to all with exams today!

Decorhate · 06/06/2022 08:20

@ealingwestmum So sorry to hear about your FIL

I’ve just back to work after half term to some dreadful news - a Y13 student at another school was murdered at the start of half term in a random attack. There are no words. I know many of the staff there & I can’t imagine how his classmates can cope with exams this week

Volterra · 06/06/2022 08:40

Oh my goodness Decorhate, how absolutely horrific, there really are no words.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/06/2022 08:42

@ealingwestmum I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL, sending love and hugs. x

Good luck to anyone with exams today. Sounds like everyone has a tough week this week, DS has Eng Lit tomorrow (he's nervous!!), Biology on Thursday and History on Friday. Then two a week for the next couple of weeks.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/06/2022 08:45

oh no! @Decorhate what an awful thing to happen. I hope there is some support for those adults and children who need it. Just horrendous. 😔
