Thread 32 - Corona Cohort 'May' the Mumsnet force be with them for their venture to exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 06/05/2022 23:48

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thank you Orange.

Congratulations Granny Zebra. I notice Oxford has already made Casper an unconditional offer for this Sept 22, based on his cuteness incredible IQ and predictions, but it might be best if he defers. Wink

Zebracat! Amazing! Congrats!

Oblomov22 · 07/05/2022 17:16

Nice one Singing
Love the Casper addition. 🤣

sazzy5 · 07/05/2022 17:31

Thanks for the new thread.
DS2 has done 2 written exams in his GCSEs and seems relaxed.
DS1 is working very hard but really flunking chemistry. He’s battling with it, I can’t help at all as I know nothing.
the next few weeks are going to be tough, DH away and DS1 starting his exams.
I can’t believe it is all coming around so quickly, I am a bury your head in the sand kind of person.

singingstones · 07/05/2022 17:41

DS has done his physics practical papers this week, which were "easy" - I am slightly alarmed by that. He has biology pracs next week. And DD starts her GCSEs a week on Monday, 9 sleeps to go 😬
We are in the calm before the storm.

icanbewhatiwant · 07/05/2022 18:24

Thanks for new thread.

Hattifatteners · 07/05/2022 18:55

Thank you for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant
Great work @singingstones

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/05/2022 19:03

Casper is such a clever boy !!

OP posts:
NCTDN · 07/05/2022 19:18

Thank you singing
@Hattifatteners do you mind me asking if you're DDs offer for Bristol was contextual?

Isthisjustnormal · 07/05/2022 19:34

Awww, excellent choices by Casper there @singingstones! Ds is firm York insurance Bath but not sure ive formally let the thread know ;-)

ProggyMat · 07/05/2022 19:42

Checking in!
Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant
Kudos to @singingstones as always-loving the inclusion of Casper ❤️
@Zebracat Congratulations!!!

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/05/2022 19:44

Yes sorry thanks @singingstones I was too busy chuckling at the inclusion of Casper and forgot to thank you 😂

OP posts:
Shimy · 07/05/2022 20:11

@singingstones What a great list with Casper aka Zebracat's Grandson in there. Thank you.

At that time the A star/ A boundary was circa 25% and as we know the 2022 A star/ A grades given will be pegged back to ‘ 35% to mitigate against the ‘grade inflation’ of 2020 and 2021

Does it not seem rather unfair that this cohort are subjected to tougher grade boundaries because of the last 2yrs grade inflation whilst at the same time universities have raised their standard grade requirements to mitigate against the same grade inflation?

Piggywaspushed · 07/05/2022 20:57

Thanks for new thread. It's all getting rather real.

Hattifatteners · 07/05/2022 21:02

@NCTDN answer is yes and I have to say we weren't expecting it. Bristol is quite generous with their contextual criteria and you only need to meet one of them. Our post code is on the second quintile. DD was very surprised and to start with thought that they might have made a mistake 😁. Have eased the exam pressure considerably...

NCTDN · 07/05/2022 21:03

I thought it must have been - it seems very low for vet science! DD also has a contextual offer from there which was very unexpected.

ealingwestmum · 07/05/2022 21:53

Thank you Orange for new thread and Shimy for your continued offers housekeeping. Wonder if Casper knows how many invested ‘aunties’ he’s already got in his future?

Zebracat · 07/05/2022 21:58

Thanks for the thread, and the list with our little Casper on it. Glad to see we aren’t the only ones not to have firmed and insured. Think we may be in a position to do so in about 10days. Shes going to visit Exeter. And I’m going to meet Casper on Thursday, can’t wait.

Hattifatteners · 07/05/2022 22:02

@NCTDN very low indeed. DD is predicted A star A star A. Her friend who has an offer for Psychology needs to get A*AA 🤔
I don't understand the formatting. Why does it allow me to put a star in one place but not another?

singingstones · 07/05/2022 22:10

Hatti I think anything between two stars gets put into bold. So using one star is ok but if you use two, eg if you say DS needs an A and I'm not sure he will get an A then that's what happens!

22Newnames · 07/05/2022 22:19

Thanks @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and @singingstones.

Congrats @Zebracat

Nard75 · 07/05/2022 22:20

Thank you @Orange for new thread and @Shimy for the new list.

Cantonet · 07/05/2022 22:35

Many thanks to @orange & @SingingStones. For some reason the watch button isn't working any more.

Monkey2001 · 07/05/2022 22:51

Thanks for new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and list @singingstones.

Following Casper means this thread is going to have to keep going for another 18 years, by which time we could all be grannies! if we continue to burn through 20 threads a year, that is another 360 threads....

Hope you have a lovely time meeting him on Thursday @Zebracat
