Thread 33 - Lovely Jubbly Jubilee Break, then back to Exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 27/05/2022 17:10

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board. Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future?

@singingstones you're absolutely right that we will then move onto stressing over results!

Monkey2001 · 16/06/2022 09:12

@sazzy5 a lot of people in Bristol work for a company which provides staff for events - football, rugby, weddings, festivals, most are for part of a day at a time. They interview you approve you for the database and then you can log in and see which jobs are available and sign up for the shifts you want. My DC have not done it (DS2 signed up, but has not actually wanted to do any shifts), but many of my friends DC have. You could look into whether there is a similar thing near you as it is super flexible, and you can pick up work in uni holidays.

If any of the people coming to Bristol might want ad hoc part time work they can check out thewaitinggameltd.co.uk/

Heifer · 16/06/2022 09:13

@Monkey2001 totally agree with you re mental state - along with physical state. They can't revise all day/evening so it's great to go off and do other things. That is why DD is still playing hockey 1 night a week (local summer tournament). It's just what she needs to relax. She said she didn't have time for the gym last night but that's the first time she wanted to go but didn't feel she should. I think she feels less prepared for this psychology p3 as I'm guessing she stared on p1 then p2 and also have biology p2 tomorrow.

Seeline · 16/06/2022 09:16

God - a walk on the beach sounds bliss! Haven't even got any decent parks near us in our but of South London. DD doesn't like to travel anywhere at the moment - sees it as a waste of time ☹️

Volterra · 16/06/2022 09:27

Agree about mental state. It’s hard to tell how much revision DS is doing, not loads I don’t think. He’s been on good form though and pragmatic about it all which is a huge help.

With the move planned but no date it’s hard to make plans for the summer. I think whatever happens we’ll move from here mid August and leave it empty if needs be as we all need to move on now and I’d like DS to have a bit of time to settle in his new room before going in September, he’s lived here all his life.

ChristopherTracy · 16/06/2022 09:30

Last physics paper today. DS cut it a bit fine leaving the house at 825 for a 9am paper. I shouted down the stairs like a unhinged person. I'm sure that put him in the best mindset for an exam. Tsk.

Wheresthebeach · 16/06/2022 09:37

Good luck to everyone today. DD as well seems to be struggling to focus - we're suggesting that revision should just be rereading, watching youtube video's etc as anything else seems to exhaust her. Bio 2 tomorrow, then 3 exams next week which is going to be very hard. Pale and spotty as well here. And the heat isn't helping. I'm off to buy a couple of energy drinks for her.

Would love a walk on the beach, DD went swimming yesterday with a friend, I will force her to the gym today so she doesn't just sit around the house stressing today.

crazycrofter · 16/06/2022 10:14

Hope today goes well for everyone. Dd decided a couple of weeks back that she can’t focus on her own in her room, so she’s mostly been revising in the uni library with a selection of friends from various different schools. She bumped into an old friend there, who’s going to Nottingham to do her course, so that’s nice, they can go to lectures together.

I think because she’s going out every day and having social time too, she’s coping fine. She’s been going to the gym first thing too. She does tend to cram before the exams though. Last Thursday she was at the library after her exam from about 1pm to 10pm, then came home and worked til 2am and got up for more study at 4am! She said she felt fine and the exam went well, so it obviously works for her. Like @Monkey2001 said, it’s best they find their own way, which is different for everyone.

Nearly there now! I’ve said to dd that this is her last fun summer! But she’s also going to sign up for some ad-hoc work with an agency

Cantonet · 16/06/2022 10:47

Ds1 is doing his last exam - Psychology today. He wanted to come home this weekend to relax, but I don't want him to catch Covid & scupper his last two weeks of school. I felt cruel telling him to stay.

singingstones · 16/06/2022 11:55

I'm not sure how much work DS is doing, he holes up in his room for long periods but could well be watching films on his iPad. He just fainted though, so is definitely not 100%. I felt guilty because he asked me half an hour or so earlier to get him some sausage rolls and I was faffing about. Anyway mum guilt = trolley full of snacks so that's a bit of compensation for him.

ChristopherTracy · 16/06/2022 12:01

DS came back from physics saying it was the hardest of the lot with two questions tricky but thinks it was ok. Physics completed though - hurrah! I then asked him to help with some garden landscaping to which I just got a quizzical eyebrow and he went back to gaming.

Appuskidu · 16/06/2022 12:04

DD had psychology today-seemed to think it was ok.

It is absolutely boiling here today which hasn’t helped and I’m glad she hasn’t got one tomorrow when it’s supposed to be 33 degrees!

Last history next week and then all over, thank goodness. I think she is absolutely shattered.

Monkey2001 · 16/06/2022 12:16

@ChristopherTracy which board was he? DS just did OCR A Physics and thought the paper was good, not great, but thinks he was fine for the A he needs, marginal for the A* he would like.

@singingstones does your DS faint much? Maybe he is more stressed than you realised. Bet you are plying him with carbs now!

Just one more Maths for us, and it is his favourite (with pre-exam job interview in the morning), then he will be off to Cornwall on Wednesday for a few days with GF. The 2 DSs are having to negotiate who gets the car for their various holidays.

Only 13 posts left on this thread. We need to try not to use the last one so that @OrangeCinnamonCroissant can link the next one (please!)

Cantonet · 16/06/2022 12:24

DS said the Psychology had a big section on addiction that they had covered a long time ago in not much depth. So equivalent to more than 20 marks including a 16 marker. The whole class struggled with this section apparently. The rest of the paper was ok but he mis-read a small question & was cross with himself.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 16/06/2022 12:34

Oh eek next thread coming up. Hope all OK with examinees this afternoon and this morning.

ChristopherTracy · 16/06/2022 12:42

Yes @Monkey2001 OCR physics. DS only needs a B thankfully.

@NCTDN en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fraisthorpe_Beach.JPG is where we go. But DS has rebuffed my lovely suggestion. It's 30 mins drive and he says he needs to revise for tomorrow's biology (not maths!). I don't think he'd take more time out than he does for a break for dinner and a bit of TV anyway but it's his choice.

Feedback a bit like @ChristopherTracy on todays physics, it was 'hard to tell' so fingers crossed as he needs an A.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 16/06/2022 14:59

Ooh Fraisthorpe looks lovely. I'm very near the sea but not within walking distance of a nice wide sandy beach.
My fave is Sandy Point on Hayling Island more for the memories than anything else. There is a bit of pebble then at low tide lots of sand, It looks over the Witterings which is lovely and Sand Duney , no pebbles but always packed and a 20 minute journey will take 3 x that on a hot day.

I've been making an effort drinking my water today and a mcdonalds milkshake

Did anyones else’s child do A level AQA Law this week?
Sounds like there’s been an issue re the advance information and they had a 30 mk question they hadn’t covered.
theres a right to do about it on Twitter.

My son doesn’t seem to bothered, but some of his friends were in tears, uni hopes ruined etc

This thread is pretty much ended now and we are over here :

Please do join us there and copy your post. So sorry to hear that, how stressful for them. The advance info has caused issues on few subjects, it’s really not on.

JudyGemstone · 16/06/2022 16:03

Oh yeah, I meant to post on the new one whoops! Will copy now, thanks x
