Thread 33 - Lovely Jubbly Jubilee Break, then back to Exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 27/05/2022 17:10

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board. Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future?

Will do Heifer, of course.
Happy birthday crazy dd.

Shimy · 01/06/2022 21:11

@Heifer, you know I wish DS was off riding his bike with friends. That sounds like a brilliant way to de-stress whilst getting the good old cardiac pumping.

mummyinbeds · 01/06/2022 21:17

@Oblomov22 can I have the link for DS too please I doubt he'll engage but he's surprised me once today so you never know 🤔

Oblomov22 · 01/06/2022 21:29

Sure mummy. No problem.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 01/06/2022 21:57

Oh, that’s rough, NCTDN. Hope the Spanish paper is nice for her.

heifer that sounds so positive and a breath of fresh air after the struggles to get ALN recognised and supported at all to date.
DD hasn’t sorted her DSA application yet, but I’m hoping it will go as well as it has for you.

NCTDN · 01/06/2022 22:35

@Alsoplayspiccolo she's got another 2 hour exam the next morning as well Sad

Monkey2001 · 01/06/2022 23:59

Happy Birthday Crazy Junior!

DS has been working, not as much as he meant to, but so much better than DS1 ever did! He got his interview score from Newcastle and we think it puts him fairly near the bottom of the waiting list so he has decided to plan for a gap year. I still think he has a better chance than he realises on results day, depending on how generous grades really are. His school were encouraging gap year people to apply for LSA jobs and apparently they didn't get enough applicants so he is planning to ask the Head of Sixth Form whether he could fit an LSA job round doing A level Chemistry next year.

Re Fresher stuff, we haven't been through it as DS1 was a Covid cohort Fresher so couldn't do anything, but on WIWIKAU lots of people say that they regretted getting the tickets in advance as you want to go to things with flatmates and people you meet, so flexibility is good.

icanbewhatiwant · 02/06/2022 09:18

Are people thinking of fresher events this early? I know ds1 didn't get any fresher tickets until he'd joined his group chat for accommodation, that was several weeks after results. He wasn't told his accommodation until a week after results. He joined a group chat, but it was all girls, so he didn't say much in the conversation.

We have lots of jubilee stuff happening on our village playing field today. I wasn't sure whether to go as still testing positive, I think I'll just make sure I don't stand close to people.

Ds2 is very anti royal family. He's already started going on about them this morning, all about tax payers money shouldn't go to the royals and that they don't pay inheritance tax. I shall shut my ears today.

Isthisjustnormal · 02/06/2022 09:39

Happy birthday little crazy!

We have compromised for the jubilee/start of Pride and put up both union jack bunting and pride flags, which we feel somehow balances things out! Not a Royalist but a fan of celebrations ;-)

Seeline · 02/06/2022 09:47

Freshers tickets on sale this early are generally nothing to do with the actual unis. If a city has more than 1 uni, these events will be open to all. The individual SUs normally put on events, but their details are usually released much nearer the time.

ExtremelyDedicated · 02/06/2022 10:32

Morning all,

We were amazed at how good the DSA process has been too Heifer. We had DS’s approval letter a few weeks ago but have sat on it for a while as DS has still been a little wobbly and once we have ordered everything it’s harder to back out but he’s OK now and it’s on this weekend’s to-do list, alongside a few other life admin things for him (I want to get him to download and save all his BTEC assignments before he loses access to the school system, we need to sort him out a few things like an Amazon account of his own etc).

He has been working for perhaps a couple of hours a day, but only has two more exams to go, he is fretting that he’s not doing enough but there is only so much he can do for one subject. He had an online revision session with his teacher and class yesterday.

crazycrofter · 02/06/2022 10:49

Dd extended her celebrations last night by going to a club too so I wasn’t up when she got in at 2.30 ish (she sent me a text in case I happened to be worrying 😂). I doubt she’ll be doing much this morning.

She said she wasn’t going to buy freshers tickets yet/if at all because she’d rather wait and do stuff with new friends/see what others are doing.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/06/2022 19:10

Checking in! Thank you @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and @singingstones . Having a bit of a stressful time (work related not school related) so haven’t had time to be on here really. First day of good weather in what seems like forever and it’s very welcome. DS starting to get slightly nervous about Eng Lit on Tuesday (anyone doing OCR?) too many quotes to learn (critic and books/play). Hope everyone else is good.

kiwiandcherries · 02/06/2022 19:42

Hi @JustHereWithMyPopcorn, my dd has Eng Lit paper 1 on Tuesday but it's Eduquas.
Fingers crossed all goes well for them both!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/06/2022 20:21

@kiwiandcherries ooh good luck to her, is she desperately learning quotes too?

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 02/06/2022 20:34

We have paper 1 English Lit on Tues but AQA. Sociology that afternoon then we are halfway through! Yippee!

DD also has Eng Lit (peotry) on Tuesday - first exam for her - eeek…

Wheresthebeach · 03/06/2022 10:08

Next week DD has two exams, Geo on Wed, and Bio on Thursday. I'm hoping she'll feel better once she's in the thick of it.

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend.

Seeline · 03/06/2022 10:13

DD already worrying about next week - psych 2 on Wednesday, with business 2 and bio 1 on Thursday.

I've persuaded her to have a lie in today - she's been getting up at 8 every day. No sign of her yet....

sofakingcool · 03/06/2022 10:18

DS is remaining pretty calm about next weeks exams - the worst week of the lot with all three subjects Monday - Wed.
He's working all evenings at a pub, god knows what time he'll get in, so who knows what revision will be done. He'll probably have to make a decision whether he gets sleep or revises Sad

I'm unimpressed with him as he was meant to have spoken to his boss and failed (he was going to ask for minimal hours over the exam period), but what can I say? I'm just hoping August hurries up so we can get it over and done with

Sounds like she had a great time @crazy Re buying tickets - that is exactly the advice I gave DD.

@Shimy I am pleased she is out exercising but a bit more revision too would be nice ;-) to be fair she did say yesterday that she hasn't done enough in the last few days and needs to do more.

@EwwSprouts yes it seems reading threads on MNsupport has to be fought for and won in secondary, thankfully for us onwards and upwards.

@Alsoplayspiccolo thanks - hope the DSA application goes well for you too.

@ExtremelyDedicated I didn't realise you had to sort it all out once approved. For some reason I was under the impression it was sorted by someone else! I wonder if it depends who did the assessment on behalf of the DSA? ie which company you pick but no idea, so await the confirmation (hopefully) letter with interet.

Good luck with the English revision. DD has Psychology (P2) and Core Maths on Wednesday, Biology on Thursday and PE (P2) on Friday so a full on week, that will then be 6/10 done. 3rd week is 3 more and last week is just the 1 exam. Then all done (phew)...

Is anyone actually doing an Platinum Jubilee celebrations? Most I've managed is watching it yesterday morning on the television.

crazycrofter · 03/06/2022 10:28

The jubilee has passed me by to be honest! Enjoying the lie ins though! Dd also has 3 next week - Psych 2, RS 1, History 2. Just 2 left after that, one each week. Ds has 5 GCSEs next week and restarted the revision yesterday with 45 minutes of Physics 😂

Wheresthebeach · 03/06/2022 10:34

Sounds like your DD had a lovely birthday @crazycrofter .

DD's exams really spread out, her busiest week is the final one in June which I think it quite hard. Initially I was pleased they were so spread out but I think it's just making the stress over Chemistry worse.

We went to the Church Square last night for 45 minutes and watched a fire show (madness - two girls with twirling batons of fire), and the lighting of the beacon on top of the Church. Very much a last minute decision. DD still suffering with headache's which I hope will ease soon.

Monkey2001 · 03/06/2022 10:51

Jubilee passing us by too, but nice to have the bank hols. If we were in London we would have wanted to see the fly past, but would not travel for it.

@Wheresthebeach a friend's DD loves circus skills and has got into hooping. She has just started fire hooping but her poor mum can't bear to watch, particularly scary as she has very long hair!

3 for us next week too (Maths on Tuesday, Physics and PE on Friday), 2 the following week and 1 the week after that. He says he would like to aim for 100% on the final paper (applied maths) as he has 5 days to prepare for it and it is his strongest paper (I suspect that one the time comes he will just catch up on sleep and gym!). He and his GF were talking about doing eachothers papers for Physics and whether that would make them work harder as they would feel guilty if they much up someone else's exam. I think it was because he was shocked by the lack of security in exams and seeing that someone else could have sat his papers and nobody would know.
