Thread 32 - Corona Cohort 'May' the Mumsnet force be with them for their venture to exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 06/05/2022 23:48

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant Great thread title!

@singingstones Thanks for the updated list. All those bold required grades are quite intimidating.

@Shimy I think you're right there. Hopefully universities will recognise this if results day doesn't go well.

Fiddlersgreen · 08/05/2022 00:18

Thanks for the new thread and updated list!

DS has finally pushed the button and has confirmed Cardiff with Brighton insurance.
we have to pick 10 accommodation choices for Cardiff which we are doing tomorrow.
Shocked by the cost but have seen they are one of the cheapest!!

I have booked results day an annual leave in case I’m needed for clearing etc but would you all recommend taking the next day off too?

Love that Casper’s now included, he’ll be the youngest graduate yet 😂

EspeciallyDistracted · 08/05/2022 06:34

Morning all, thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and the updated list @singingstones

Congratulations on becoming Granny @Zebracat , both my grandmothers were Granny and so is my mum.

Also congratulations on pushing the button @Fiddlersgreen

The calm before the storm here too. DS has the BTEC sport exam tomorrow and is very chilled now compared to a week ago when all the planning work was underway (they prepare a set of notes to take into the exam under controlled conditions - handed in and the school have laminated them for them). Then a bit of a break before history. DD starts her GCSEs on the 17th. DS had a night out on Friday with the hockey club, DD and DH went to see Dr Strange last night (I went to Downton Abbey). I am now sitting in the garden with a cuppa enjoying listening to the birds chirp.

crazycrofter · 08/05/2022 07:54

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and @singingstones .

Lonecatwithkitten · 08/05/2022 08:05

Coming back to the thread two years later and delighted to see the group have done so well.
My DD took an OCR instead of conventional sixth form in performing arts this was the perfect choice for her. Final assessments are done now and it is all about showcase for the next two months. She has achieved her dream place for the next step.
I feel the GCSE 2020 cohort are a group who have faced so much adversity that it is wonderful to see them all doing so well.

ealingwestmum · 08/05/2022 10:02

That’s a lovely update Lonecat, best of luck to your DD on her showcase.

EwwSprouts · 08/05/2022 12:19

@Lonecatwithkitten Fabulous update. Keep us posted, quite a few of us seem to like a trip to the West End.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 08/05/2022 12:36

Fab update, lonecat - I hope her next step is everything she hopes it will be. Exciting times!

Oblomov22 · 08/05/2022 12:38

Lonecat pleased to read your update.

sofakingcool · 08/05/2022 16:52

Thanks for the new thread! Rattling through them quickly these days Shock

Stressed out here, DS is struggling and the most recent mocks grades aren't looking great Sad. He's got his head firmly in a hole, refusing to talk about it, just adamant he's off to Uni. I'd like him to consider contacting UCAS to see if he can change his insurance to his firm (much more likely results), to give him a chance, but he just won't consider it. So I think it'll either be getting insurance on results day (pot luck accommodation) or somewhere else.

Sigh Sad

Monkey2001 · 08/05/2022 19:06

@sofakingcool he will find somewhere to live wherever he goes, and maybe not getting an ideal choice will help him to understand there are consequences to decisions. I am frustrated on behalf of DS1 who turned down uni accom at ST Andrews for his third year and now has nowhere to live. They have to learn and we have to stand back and let them. 🙁

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 08/05/2022 19:43

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and the updated list @singingstones love our little Caspar on there! (He is ours now you understand @Zebracat ) 😄

AnneOfCleavage · 08/05/2022 20:35

It seems ages since I've been here. Since the new site update i've not been able to get on here as it doesn't recognise my email or password but i tried on the desktop and it seems to have finally worked weirdly so thought I'd quickly post and see if it lets me post - it hasn't so far. I'll be on here sporadically as don't get the chance to go on the household PC. I can't get into threads im on or watching so have to wait til it shows up on active which is pure luck as may not be when I am on. Been a nightmare. Is it just me?

I've had a quick catch up but so much to read up on but just to say BIG congrats on becoming a Granny Zebra and thanks for the new thread Orange and updated list singingstones.

Exams start May 23rd and DD is working so hard with essay plans and revision so hope she doesn't get burn out before the actual thing. Early morning revision classes start daily as from tomorrow and after school ones twice a week so I hope DD can sustain all this. History coursework has been completed and handed in but the teacher is being tight lipped as to result so it's interesting some schools tell their students. One student asked if they all got 30 or more out of 40 and the teacher said yes so that's all DD knows. Is that a B grade or could that be an A? Her teacher was impressed by her coursework though so we're hoping for 35+.

Right fingers crossed this posts...

EwwSprouts · 08/05/2022 22:20

@AnneOfCleavage We see you! Welcome back. Lots have had issues since the MN changes.

Seeline · 09/05/2022 08:04

Thanks for the new thread

Fonty · 09/05/2022 09:14

Thanks for the new thread & updated list. Loving Caspar joining 😂 Huge congratulations zebra. Very exciting for you.

We have had news in our house too. Friday night a rejection from Edinburgh & an offer from Durham! He was disappointed by Edinburgh as he loved the city, but has decided that Durham’s course is not right for him.

So, he has pressed the button & firmed Exeter & insured Birmingham. ☑️ It’s such a relief to not have it hanging over us & I can finally stop lurking on TSR threads!

Just need to get the grades now. Annoyingly Liverpool FC seem to be playing every other day for the next 3 weeks & he sat and watched the Miami GP all evening. Grrrr!! We have no sticky notes, stand-up dual purpose desks lol, or laminated sheets anywhere! 😢

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/05/2022 09:17

Hi @AnneOfCleavage DS got his History mark back but not his English, it seems quite hit and miss what different schools allow the students to know. DS's History teacher told him 34 was an A but who knows this year.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/05/2022 09:21

From what Piggy has said, and what I’ve read elsewhere, schools HAVE to give students their coursework marks, as students have the right to appeal them, AnneofCleavage.
DD has had her marks for English lit and DS has had his for music GCSE, so your DD should push this with her teacher, or maybe the exams officer.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/05/2022 09:22

@Fonty what a rollercoaster of a weekend for you guys! Glad he's made a decision though. DS and DH are also LFC fans, I am so sick of the amount of football in this house! DS has also booked tain tickets and a hotel to go to Liverpool for the final of something that he doesn't have a ticket for. 😱

ealingwestmum · 09/05/2022 09:48

Great relief to have made your decisions Fonty, sorry Edinburgh didn’t offer, they’ve been pretty brutal with such tight number of places.

crazycrofter · 09/05/2022 10:03

Well done @fonty ds for making the final decision! Sounds like he’s got two really good options, despite the disappointment of Edinburgh’s rejection.

Don't worry about lack of notes! Dd is still writing her history notes - I’d rather she was actually revising from them!

Zebracat · 09/05/2022 10:08

@sofakingcool sorry for all the stress on you. I went back to our lovely list and it doesn’t say what your DS needs to get. If you told us that and his current grades, we might be able to help you refine your thinking, and frame any conversation with him. Not being nosy, honest. I’m similarly worried myself because our ones NEA results, both Cs are well short of what she needs. But I’ve been reassured by reading here that the grade boundaries aren’t set yet, so what I need to know are the actual marks, if that makes sense.
@Fonty, with the above caveat of disappointing NEAs, ours is also likely to firm History at Exeter, as part of FCH. We might make a little team!

Wheresthebeach · 09/05/2022 10:09

Thanks @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and @singingstones . Stirling work as always!
@Fonty Congrats on the button pushing. It does take a load off.
The final Uni's seem to be getting their offers/rejections out now. Some of DD's friends regretting waiting for Durham as they've been rejected and now are looking at what's left in terms of accommodation at their choices now. It really does feel like the system needs a bit of an overhaul.

DD had a wobble last night when she realised she's entering the last week of school. She really likes some of her teachers and the thought of not seeing them again has hit her hard today. Emotional weekend with Prom, lovely time, but the sense of 'end of' is hard. I hope she refocuses on work after a weekend off.

PaddingtonPaddington · 09/05/2022 11:30

Glad button are pushed @Fonty and @Fiddlersgreen. Fingers crossed for those still awaiting offers.

@sofakingcool sending MN positive vibes.

@Wheresthebeach DD also having a wobble with it being the last week of school not helped by Best friend not being a particularly good friend at the moment and having a photography exam for the last 3 days of school (even though it’s no longer a requirement for 2022 the school is still making them do it). No marks for DDs NEAs given, she said the teachers aren’t allowed to give them 🤷‍♀️

ChristopherTracy · 09/05/2022 11:50

We dont seem to be having study leave at all - still going in and having full on revision lessons here though the Btec lessons have been turned into studies.
