Thread 32 - Corona Cohort 'May' the Mumsnet force be with them for their venture to exams

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 06/05/2022 23:48

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Christopher study leave doesn't start until after half term here, but I think both DC will want to stay home to revise once exams start. Not quite sure how to manage that with the school but will see what they say. It seems crazy when DD has exams morning and afternoon that she should have to go to unrelated lessons between them instead of revising for the pm exam. They are both leaving so what's the worst they can do, I guess.

singingstones · 09/05/2022 12:10

Ooh sorry name change fail there although probably not hard to work out Grin

Oblomov22 · 09/05/2022 12:30

Good to see you AnneOfC. Well done Fonty on button pushing. Sofakingcool hope stress is ok.

Seeline · 09/05/2022 12:33

Mine was supposed to start study leave next Friday, having had a fun leavers BBQ on the Thursday. HOwever, they've discovered that several have actual A levels on the Thursday, so now have that as study leave and have to go back into school on the Friday to leave

Seeline · 09/05/2022 12:36

I discovered an old email from 2 years ago when DS should have been doing A levels telling us study leave would be starting on 6/5. This year it effectively starts on 23/5 - same school. I think it's very strange. Most of DDs lessons seem to be cover lessons anyway at the moment as staff are off doing trips etc with other years. She would be far better off at home.

Fiddlersgreen · 09/05/2022 12:56

I’m not sure if schools have been advised not to have study leave this year due to the amount of schooling missed by these students?
That’s the impression I got from DS2’s school

ChristopherTracy · 09/05/2022 13:01

I am actually quite pleased as DS does what I can only describe as fuck all when he's at home but I imagine for lots of dc it is tortuous.

Hattifatteners · 09/05/2022 13:41

DD has her final day on Thursday before starting the study leave. Dress up week this week with different theme for every day culminating in wearing old uniforms on Thursday. DD cut her skirt 'a bit' shorter than it would have been allowed in Y11 😁. She still fits into her old blouse and blazer. They will have BBQ and ice cream van to celebrate.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 09/05/2022 13:47

DS goes on study leave this Friday. They have a sort of party at school next Tuesday for some reason.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/05/2022 16:27

DS finished school on Friday for GCSE study leave, DD finishes the Friday after.

Whats the form for thanking subject teachers - cards? A present?
Ive suggested DS writes a card for each teacher - 11 in total - plus a bottle of something for his music teacher and form tutor. Does that sound ok?
DD will give gifts to all her A level tutors, plus her wonderful SENCo.

Volterra · 09/05/2022 17:00

Belated congratulations to Zebracat on the arrival of Casper. Delighted to see he is on the list !!

DS hasn't had the marks for mocks back yet so button pushing still pending until probably the weekend.

NCTDN · 09/05/2022 17:25

Still waiting on Durham here - I think it's got to be a rejection at this late stage anyway. I wish she'd pulled out of the application now so uni could be decided before exams but it's the first one tomorrow (language speaking).

Piggywaspushed · 09/05/2022 18:06

Oh, good luck!

Also, your DD's teachers will be thrilled. We hardly ever get cards at secondary, let alone gifts!

icanbewhatiwant · 09/05/2022 18:40

The Dc's school have said years 11 and 13 to stay in school each day until their last exam. So they don't get a last day, they will all leave gradually as exams finish. I heard the year 11's are having a day they will call their last day so they can celebrate. But then expected to go in. I don't know whether going in is a good thing or a bad thing. Ds doesn't mind anyway.

ealingwestmum · 09/05/2022 19:02

Mine is ED. All booked, 3 weeks of travel across 5 countries, 7 in mixed group AirB&Bing.

22Newnames · 09/05/2022 19:35

DS has a last day at school on 20th with a leavers bbq in the afternoon. Then a prom at the start of July.

I can see the concern you have @ChristopherTracy. DS is working at home but not as much as I would like. He has definitely stepped up a gear though but I would still prefer him to be in school on non exam days.

Monkey2001 · 09/05/2022 20:25

We can't go on study leave as they have not finished the syllabus for all subjects yet. Also DS would stay in bed most of the day and he likes to get marking feedback from PE teacher, so I am glad they are in school until half term.

sazzy5 · 09/05/2022 20:44

@EspeciallyDistracted my DS has his all booked. Funny how organised he is with his trip.
DS got his first A in his chemistry test, he is really happy. Here’s hoping it’s not a one off. He is working very hard, so fingers crossed. He breaks for study leave on Friday.

crazycrofter · 09/05/2022 21:58

@Piggywaspushed dd went and bought thank you cards and gifts today - but only for her RS teachers! 😂

@Cantonet ds threw his Elvanse out the window today and said he’s not taking it anymore as he feels depressed 😬 Back to square one! I’ve noticed he’s been down but whether it’s due to that, who knows?

Its DD’s last day tomorrow and they’re all going on a fancy dress pub crawl in the evening,

ealingwestmum · 09/05/2022 22:51

Majestic trip made with DD weekend gone for teachers here also.

Piggy, hope you get a surprise box of choccies or similar, feeling bad here for you given what you do for your class!

Delphigirl · 09/05/2022 23:21

Thank you for the new thread! @singingstones your list is a wonder, and love baby Casper’s appearance.

DS got his mocks back - drumroll please - BCC! SO much better than C/DEU which was the last lot… let alone the ones before which were actually worse- GAWD I think he might actually do it. Still didn’t finish most of the papers despite max extra time, breaks etc meaning he had 6.5 hrs of exams in two papers on one day. But he is getting there and I am so proud of him!

DoggerelBank · 10/05/2022 07:00

@NCTDN We're still waiting here too, for Edinburgh. I'm guessing it's very unlikely at this point. DS has an offer holder day in Manchester tomorrow, so I'm hoping he'll engage in making a decision after that. So far he's got three that are equally appealing, from what I can make out.
Although latest is he may defer and spend his year off playing video games setting up a pizza van business.
@Monkey2001 Sorry, I've not been following the thread recently. Any news from Newcastle?
@Zebracat Congratulations! How lovely!

singingstones · 10/05/2022 07:11

Great news Delphi, congrats to him and hope the trajectory continues
We have biology practical paper 1 this morning. DS is yet to emerge from his lair.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 10/05/2022 07:21

Good news @delphigirl!

Am dreading the inevitable slowness of May, Jun and July...can't we just skip to the good bit?
