Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@sofakingcool is it to see Dave? I see people getting very cross about it online.

Piggywaspushed · 18/02/2022 14:11

DS seems to have made choices : Birmingham firm ; York insurance.

I mean, personally, I'd rather live in York but not my gig!

He is yes! Why are people being cross about it?! Ridiculous

Great news!
crazycrofter · 18/02/2022 14:56

Good choice @Piggywaspushed! He’ll love Birmingham. Did he turn down Bath or is he still waiting for an offer, I can’t remember?

@Wheresthebeach we’re supposed to be doing Southampton tomorrow too, do you think it will be cancelled?

Decorhate · 18/02/2022 15:07

I’ve always thought the Birmingham campus is lovely.

Ds is supposed to be going to Southampton too tomorrow. A friend’s parent is taking him. The last time I checked Southampton had not made a decision yet. They have tickets for a football match too so I think they will be keen to go regardless!

Piggywaspushed · 18/02/2022 15:07

Bath has gone crazy. It came second in his bizarre voting system.

Next will be accommodation joy...

Wheresthebeach · 18/02/2022 15:16

@crazycrofter I hope not. I think the worst will be over…the hour long boat trip might not happen though!

Wheresthebeach · 18/02/2022 15:29

Hmmm looking at train times for tomorrow and part of the line is already going to be closed with a bus replacement. Winds less, but still high so I may be being over confident about tomorrow

Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 15:29

@Piggywaspushed two lovely unis and he'll love Birmingham not as pretty as York city but the shopping is fab and lots going on

@Piggywaspushed well done to DS for choosing! If he wants any Brum accommodation questions answered let me know and I can ask my DS1 if you like. He was in tennis courts last year which was good re location and size of flat, although the social aspects there and everywhere else were pretty killed by covid.
JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/02/2022 15:54

@sofakingcool they were getting upset about the fact the O2 has some 'extra ventilation' Grin and how it had better be fixed in the next three days and that it had better not be cancelled. I guess they've been looking forward to it for a long time?

ExtremelyDelighted · 18/02/2022 16:00

We're still off to Winchester tomorrow, they have confirmed still on. Subject to LFT though, we are both on 7 days testing after a positive contact on Weds

Yeah I guess so! I think it looks promising for Dave, they've rescheduled tonight's show (can't remember who..!) to Tuesday night so I'd be hopeful Monday is hoping to go ahead

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/02/2022 16:27

Fingers crossed for him.

crazycrofter · 18/02/2022 16:32

@Piggywaspushed what was included in his ranking process?! I'm looking forward to seeing some of the offspring of this thread on campus next year, even if I won't recognise them! Grin

School closed today due to being in the red area. DD pleased that half term has started a day early but not pleased that she needs to get all revision and homework done this weekend as she’s away Monday-Friday with one musician group and then playing in ensembles Saturday and Sunday. I think she’s struggling to keep motivation for her 2 A levels which aren’t music.
We’ve a tree down in the back garden, thankfully DH has a chainsaw and will sort it out.

Piggywaspushed · 18/02/2022 16:40

All sorts of criteria and then some sort of weighting...

Piggywaspushed · 18/02/2022 16:42

Thanks delphi Tennis Courts seems to be front runner because en suites are all so expensive. I remember it as being closer to campus too.

Seeline · 18/02/2022 16:58

But of an urgent query - DD has developed a UTI and getting nowhere with seeing a gp. Has anyone any experience of the apps where you get a private go consult? Any recommendations and will they deal with under 18s?

Oblomov22 · 18/02/2022 17:25

I've got lots of good news. Ds had another assessment day with BDO yesterday and today has actually been offered a job. He's also been re-contacted by EY. And more emails from PwC, with pre assessment days taster sessions in a couple of weeks. So it's all going on and he has to make decisions ....

How do you decide what to do??????
All our dc will face this dilemma soon enough.

Delphigirl · 18/02/2022 17:26

Ok @Piggywaspushed I’ve asked DS2 for his ranked top 5 halls for a kid who doesn’t want to pay for en-suite, and his 2 to avoid at all costs, and will let you know what he says!

Delphigirl · 18/02/2022 17:27

@Oblomov22 @that’s AMazing! really tip top! You must be so pleased and proud!

Delphigirl · 18/02/2022 17:28

He does them all and if left with more than one job offer chooses on vibes?
I had to choose between 3 magic circle law firms and plumped for the one that had Kit Kats in the meeting rooms. Best decision ever, as it turned out Grin

Piggywaspushed · 18/02/2022 17:34

En suite OK too delphi so at lest we know!
