Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I didn't realise there were so many different topics for history. Ds says about 30 and the schools choose 2 topics to cover. I guess it must be similar for other subjects. That makes removing stuff difficult, plus a lot of extra work for those making the changes.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 08/02/2022 08:25

Sorry to hear about the dreaded covid new and lingering @isthisjustnormal and @Zebracat

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCroissant

Good news on Nottingham for DS at long last. He got an offer last night for Law with French and French Law - AAA including Spanish 🤔 His knowledge of Spanish doesn't go beyond Dora the Explorer so I'm hoping that the condition should say French.

Decision time now. Nottingham or Birmingham?

Wheresthebeach · 08/02/2022 08:41

Congrats @Mummyinbeds - Good 'ole Dora! Sounds like a mix up for sure...

crazycrofter · 08/02/2022 08:53

Thanks for the new thread and updated list!

Well done on the Notts offer @mummyinbeds. Is he going to offer holder days?

AnneOfCleavage · 08/02/2022 09:08

Thanks for new thread Orange and for the concise list Singingstones.

Hope those with Covid get better soon. It's everywhere round here. DD has her booster jab on Friday so I am just crossing everything that she avoids it til she's jabbed. These last 90 days have crawled by waiting for this appointment. Couldn't bear another 90 day wait.

Anyone got snow?

Seeline · 08/02/2022 09:10

@GoldenRuby Thanks for your comments re UEA on the old thread. I understood the Village was a bit quiet compared to the on campus accommodation? We will definitely have a look round it when we go for the Offer Holder's day in March.

Fonty · 08/02/2022 09:17

Thank you Orange for the new thread. Sorry to hear about the Covid. Rotten luck. Congrats on the recent offers & DC beginning to firm.

I nearly spilt my coffee @mummyinbeds, laughing at the Dora comment. I remember CBeebies doing an entire back to back weekend with it on in our house 😂

singingstones · 08/02/2022 09:26

Ah I do miss CBeebies, I must admit. Love a bit of Dora. I'll be singing those songs all day now, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map etc etc

BlueMarigold · 08/02/2022 09:33

@singingstones Dora’s grown up now and “Map” has been replaced by MapApp on her phone.

singingstones · 08/02/2022 09:37

Nooooo! Shock

Just placemarking. DS filled in the physics blanks last night by saying that he thinks there are some topics removed in one paper but they are still in the other so utterly pointless - could this be true?

Wheresthebeach · 08/02/2022 10:42

@ChristopherTracy I fear it could be. It all seems a bit of a dogs dinner.

I rather wish they'd left it alone and just dealt with grade boundaries in the normal way. They'd be super low, but at least clear.

cariadambyth · 08/02/2022 10:42

Thanks as ever to@OrangeCinnamonCroissant and @singingstones. The last thread seemed very fast moving, I’ll try to keep on top of this one more efficiently. Lovely to hear of more offers coming in and I am looking forward to hearing about everyone’s offer holder days. We have a few coming up over half term, Warwick and RHUL.
Dd was very disappointed that there have been so few changes to Russia in AQA history, the teacher is very cross on their behalf. It all seems to be a lottery doesn’t it?

Great news MummyinBeds

PaddingtonPaddington · 08/02/2022 10:44

DD used to love Dora (and it’s how I learnt to count to 6 in Spanish!)

@AnneOfCleavage fingers crossed jab goes ahead. DD must be due a booster soon.

@mummyinbeds congrats on the notts offer

Alsoplayspiccolo · 08/02/2022 11:09

Thanks for the new thread, Orange, and the super-duper update list , singing.
From a quick scan, it doesn’t look like anyone else has applied to KCL, which is the one DD is still waiting to hear from.

I spent last night trying to compile new revision check lists for GCSEs for DS. It’s much easier when the board prints what’s not included.

Seeline · 08/02/2022 11:59

@ChristopherTracy

Just placemarking. DS filled in the physics blanks last night by saying that he thinks there are some topics removed in one paper but they are still in the other so utterly pointless - could this be true?
For DDs boards, none of them are saying anything has been removed, they are just indicating where the subject areas where most marks can be gained for each paper. The rest of the syllabus may still crop up in smaller questions, and can/should be referred to when answering questions.

In your eg Christopher I think it means that the topic will feature heavily on one paper, but not so much on others.

WHich really isn't much help to anyone.....

Oblomov22 · 08/02/2022 12:04

Thank you Singing.
Well done on the Nottingham offer Mummyinbeds, minus the Dora Spanish, French instead. Grin

Ds's girlfriend is still waiting for Nottingham and Durham offers. Ds won't know if he is offered his Nottingham place till next month, end of March? after the PwC applications finish. Seems like ages away. Painful for me.

Ds doesnt want to talk about unis atm. He's now solely concentrating on revising for Feb mocks, which are the week after the Feb 1/2 term.

GoldenRuby · 08/02/2022 13:28

@Seeline the Village isn't party central like the Ziggs, but DS got on well with his flat mates and they were a very sociable flat. It's only 10-15 mins walk to the LCR so not far away at all. As ever though a lot depends on who you share with. If you are in the Village you are less likely to be asked to host sports club pres (assuming some in the flat are in clubs) as teams tend to find it easier to stay on campus after fixtures and dump bags, hockey sticks etc in a freshers flat before going to the bar. That is a good thing - the one time DS hosted it was apparently not pretty!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 08/02/2022 13:41

Thanks for the new thread and list @OrangeCinnamonCroissant and @singingstones.

@mummyinbeds fab news about Notts, I'm so pleased for your DS after all the wait and stress! Are you doing the offer holders day?

Just taken DS1 for a PCR, he's been poorly for a couple of days but testing negative on LFTs. Scholl say if you have symptoms then stay home and get a PCR. What are symptoms these days? NHS website says cough, temperature , loss of smell/taste but most people I know have just felt like they've got a cold.

icanbewhatiwant · 08/02/2022 14:19

@Seeline ds1 is at UEA. He put the village higher up on his accommodation choices than the accommodation he was given. He was given 7th choice. He stayed closer to campus (Paston house) than the village, but his friends who were in the village had nicer accommodation and it was cheaper. So he would have preferred the village.

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I almost took ds3 for a pcr on Sunday. I wasn't sure whether to. He came down with a headache and a temperature Saturday, but an hour or so later the temperature had gone after I told him to get out from under his duvet with a hoodie on, hood up. Sunday he just had a headache. I kept him off school yesterday, though he was better. He's gone in today. He has done 5 LFT's between Thursday and this morn. all negative. I've been testing daily too as a few at work are positive. The boys are bringing the old style tests back from school, the throat ones, I've also ordered 2 lots online and they are throat tests. I have such a bad gag reflex, I hate them. The boys don't seem to mind scraping their throats though.

mummyinbeds · 08/02/2022 15:02

Hi @JustHereWithMyPopcorn yes it was a massive relief apart from the Spanish. I need to get DS to call Nottingham to make sure it's a typo and he hasn't got to learn a new language in three months.

Did your DS get an invitation to an Offer day? I'm not sure I'll manage to drag DS there again - I might take DD and pretend she's DS just so I can go and see what I missed out on when they rejected me 30+ years ago. I'm still bitter 🤣

mummyinbeds · 08/02/2022 15:03

Hope your DS is negative by the way @just
