Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@icanbewhatiwant goodness what a lot of work but I’d find it fascinating - where does he study biology?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/02/2022 11:04

@Delphigirl

It’s getting pretty windy in Oxford, my chickens look like they are thinking of going back to bed! Kids schools aren’t shut but I’ve kept my 2 off much to their abject disgust, and they are attending class remotely. Dh meant to be flying into Heathrow at 2pm… let’s see!
My friend works at Heathrow, she was dreading going in this morning, she's expecting chaos..
icanbewhatiwant · 18/02/2022 11:09

@Fruitygal UEA. He's home safely now.

Cinema cancelled. They said they'd refund me. But I paid most of it with Tesco points, so I think I've lost them now. But I'd rather that than risk the drive. Ds3 is angry with me. Told me not to bother re booking for him. Ds2 is asleep anyway. We'd need to leave about now. I'll be able to tell him we've been and are back home by the time he wakes up. He won't know we didn't go.

ExtremelyDelighted · 18/02/2022 11:28

@Fiddlersgreen Bournemouth have just emailed DS about offer holder days

Wheresthebeach · 18/02/2022 11:31

Mad in London. DD's had a birthday party to go to today but its been cancelled.
We've tied down the trampoline in the garden.

AnneOfCleavage · 18/02/2022 11:32

Shimy three fence panels lost here and counting...

The wind here is reminiscent of Hurricane Sandy in New York when we were there a few years back. Pretty frightening and too dangerous to go out for falling tiles and debris. Anything not anchored down is buffeting around here and the sun of earlier has been replaced with the rain now.

Glad you managed to cancel the cinema Icanbe and I hope those with DC coming home later get home safe.

Eek lights are flickering and the power is intermittent - I can hear DH struggling in the office with connection. DD will prob have trouble with her online lessons too.

Piggywaspushed · 18/02/2022 11:45

DBIL lost his house in Katrina so it's all relative I guess!

Thank you, I will ask DS to check when he finally wakes up!

Shimy · 18/02/2022 12:02

@AnneOfCleavage The whole fence is now down. It’s never been this bad and dreading the cost of fixing it. Sorry to hear your fence is going to. Makes me think it’s might be better to have a brick fence? I just find them unsightly in the garden area. Our fence is partly brick and of course that part is standing proud.

ExtremelyDelighted · 18/02/2022 12:08

One of next doors fence panels is falling into out garden. They have dense shrubs their side which grow and push against the panels till they weaken and break so they always have to be replaced from our side annoyingly.

Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 12:20

@icanbewhatiwant so pleased he's home now - we are on UEA side of the country and the wind started going particularly crazy since 11am !

Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 12:25

Sister in SW has informed me that I'm in a red zone like her - she has no power and is in the middle on nowhere surrounded by large old trees......Glad we've battened things down last night as its started to get crazy here in the past hour in East Anglia

icanbewhatiwant · 18/02/2022 12:40

@Fruitygal I'm not far from UEA either. About 40 mins drive away. So I knew his weather would be similar to here. I think we will get off lightly compared to the rest of the country.

icanbewhatiwant · 18/02/2022 12:42

@Fruitygal south from UEA that is.

Decorhate · 18/02/2022 12:43

I’m feeling quite old when hardly anyone remembers 1987! I’d just graduated & moved to the UK. Slept through the storm & it was only when I tried (and failed) to get to work that I realised how bad it had been. I remember passing cars which had been crushed by falling trees.

It’s still very gusty here. A small tree has fallen down in our garden but don’t think it has caused any damage.

Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 12:43

@icanbewhatiwant we are west of UEA and had got a lot worse in the past 2 hrs

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/02/2022 12:49

We’ve lost a fence panel with the other neighbour now.

Decorhate · 18/02/2022 12:53

We are supposed to be going out for a meal tonight to celebrate S2’s 18th birthday- his older siblings have come home for it. Fingers crossed it dies down before that.

icanbewhatiwant · 18/02/2022 13:11

Our electricity has gone off 😔

ZittiEBuoni · 18/02/2022 13:22

We've lost a trellis and the plants that were attached, but it's salvageable, I think, as it's still in the garden.

Dd2 has a friend round and they're doing 'online learning', which seems to involve a lot of screamy laughter and guitar playing...

Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 13:27

No water - pumping station gone and have you seen the O2

Delphigirl · 18/02/2022 13:37

Oh dear I’m sorry for those with no water or power.
DH has been on the tarmac in Poland for about 3 hours. Pilot keeps telling them that he and Co pilot trained in the RAF which I think is meant to reassure them but in fact is making everyone more anxious… not clear if taking off yet

icanbewhatiwant · 18/02/2022 13:40

@Fruitygal we have water. But that's all we have.

sofakingcool · 18/02/2022 13:58

@Fruitygal

No water - pumping station gone and have you seen the O2
DS in meant to be going to a concert at the 02 on Monday
Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 14:03

@sofakingcool he'll be able to see the stars when he's at the concert !
