Thread 28 - Corona Cohort Awaiting Offers, Advance Notice, Gap Years and New Jobs

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 19:35

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Well done oblomov's DS!

EwwSprouts · 18/02/2022 17:35

@Oblomov22 Brilliant update.

@Seeline Sorry no idea. Would going to direct a pharmacist be an option?

@Seeline

But of an urgent query - DD has developed a UTI and getting nowhere with seeing a gp. Has anyone any experience of the apps where you get a private go consult? Any recommendations and will they deal with under 18s?
We have doctor care anywhere (only because it’s included free by my employer but it covers the whole family). It looks like you can sign up and do pay as you go. They have been always been brilliant and had appointments same day, you get a 20 min appointment and they listen!
singingstones · 18/02/2022 17:42

Fantastic news, Oblomov, congrats to him.

singingstones · 18/02/2022 17:47

Seeline - I have only ever used Spire and not for a GP appt, but just going on their website, our local Spire won't see U18s but there is a drop down menu of several places that will, hope one of those is near you.

Oblomov22 · 18/02/2022 17:56

Delph - "plumped for the one that had Kit Kats in the meeting rooms."

I think all our dc should use such decision making.
Which to firm or insurance?
Oblomov's ds how to choose?
Base it on kitkats. Grin

Oblomov22 · 18/02/2022 18:17

The ACA trainee job would involve 2 days in local office.

I'm sorry to gloat but I have to tell you about his presentation he did for them, his SWOT analysis for how they could sell more services, business forecasting for some of their clients. I sat on the stairs, outside him room, stunned. He was seriously impressive.

Seeline · 18/02/2022 18:25

Thanks Paddington trying Livi at the moment which I think is similar.

Fab news oblomov

Delphigirl · 18/02/2022 18:31

Oblomov you can tell a lot about both institutions and individuals based on whether or not they show kitkats the proper respect, IMO…!

That is so great about your DS. The fact that he was so impressive and did such a good job tells you he is on the right track for him, which is just so brilliant. Hurrah!

Delphigirl · 18/02/2022 18:33

Seeline I have private health with vitality (used it twice in 15 years) but I noticed the last renewal that they now offer private go services through it, not just access to consultants. I mention it in case you have any work or other private health package if so worth checking if that is covered.

Delphigirl · 18/02/2022 18:33

GP not go

22Newnames · 18/02/2022 18:40

@Delphigirl

He does them all and if left with more than one job offer chooses on vibes? I had to choose between 3 magic circle law firms and plumped for the one that had Kit Kats in the meeting rooms. Best decision ever, as it turned out Grin
I agree completely on the vibes thing (Kit Kats are a factor though!). Many moons ago when I was picking which job offer to take between a few of the then big six accountancy firms, there was a different feel to them all. I know which one I felt happiest and most comfortable at and it was a the right move. They all have slightly different cultures.
crazycrofter · 18/02/2022 19:16

Well done to your ds @Oblomov22! Does he want to experience the student life or is he happy to go straight into work?

Fonty · 18/02/2022 19:32

Great news @Oblomov22!

Wheresthebeach · 18/02/2022 20:09

What a fab update @Oblomov22

icanbewhatiwant · 18/02/2022 21:34

Our electricity has been off 9 and a half hours now. Dh has gone to bed. I shall put the dogs to bed shortly and go myself. At least the dc's have been chatting nicely for a change. They are bored though.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 18/02/2022 22:31

Brillo @Oblomov22! Decisions to be made.

I've been thinking about moving this thread to 'adult children' in September if we still need it ?

Fab news @Oblomov22!!

ExtremelyDelighted · 18/02/2022 23:19

If we still need it? I rather think we will Smile

Shimy · 18/02/2022 23:50

@Oblomov that's seriously impressive. Well done to your DS, with firms like that after him he can't go wrong.

Shimy · 18/02/2022 23:52

@icanbewhatiwant Sorry to hear about your electricity. Do you have candles/torches you're using in the interim? do you know when power might be back on?

sofakingcool · 19/02/2022 00:36

Adult children Shock, that's a scary thought!!
icanbewhatiwant · 19/02/2022 06:25

We still have no electricity. I just looked on Uk power network page, it says power should be on by 4pm Monday. It's Saturday morning 😭 I've been awake since 4am. It's going to be a very long weekend. I'm going to go for a drive in a minute, just to charge the phones.

crazycrofter · 19/02/2022 06:40

Oh no @icanbewhatiwant, what a nightmare! Hope it’s sorted sooner than that. Our boiler (nothing to do with storm) just kicked back in yesterday so we’ve cancelled the engineer visit today. I’m not convinced it’s fixed though!

Off to Southampton today - hope to ‘see’ some of you there!

icanbewhatiwant · 19/02/2022 06:58

I can't believe how quickly a house gets cold. The dogs room is so cold, ds3 has a gecko....it's far too cold in her vivarium. Will have to get the fire lit early today. I'm just wondering whether anywhere in our local town does take away hot tea. I think I'll go to the Costa machine in Tesco. Not had a cup of tea since 7.30am yesterday. I do miss my tea.
