This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I don’t remember the storm of 1987 at all - I was 11. Maybe it wasn’t so bad in the midlands?

DD’s school is closed but ds’ isn’t which has caused great annoyance. Added to which our boiler is broken, so ds has had to have a cold shower! I’m about to drive him in or he’ll be really late. So far it’s just a little breezy here.

sofakingcool · 18/02/2022 07:43

I don't remember the 1987 storm either, but I was only 7 and lived in Manchester so not sure if it was as bad up there? I now live in the south and people have often referred to how bad it was

ExtremelyDelighted · 18/02/2022 07:46

Both DCs are at home today. DD's school closed, DS was in half term anyway.

I've gone back to bed with a cuppa as its my day off. Supposed to be picking up click and collect shopping at 11, only half a mile away but wouldn't be surprised if its cancelled, I haven't had the usual confirmation email and it gets picked from a store 10 miles away cross country.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 18/02/2022 08:45

Their will never be another 'Snow Day' again for the littlies will there? Not that we get snow at all down here, but those days where all schools were closed and everyone is out and about making snowmen/women and igloos.

I think the storm will pass just south of us. Just dropped DS at school for his final mock. He thinks outdoor tennis will be on tonight. Hmm

Hope everyone stays safe and warm.

Piggywaspushed · 18/02/2022 09:12

I was sitting outside in my back garden in some rare Glasgow sunshine in 1987.

Delphigirl · 18/02/2022 09:22

It’s getting pretty windy in Oxford, my chickens look like they are thinking of going back to bed! Kids schools aren’t shut but I’ve kept my 2 off much to their abject disgust, and they are attending class remotely. Dh meant to be flying into Heathrow at 2pm… let’s see!

Delphigirl · 18/02/2022 09:25

I was at uni in Manchester in 1987. Being students we were Totally unaware of weather reports but I remember a frighteningly gusty trip back from the Asda superstore in a n old Renault 5 (basically made of tin foil) the evening before the weather really hit. South got it much worse but there were still a fair amount of trees down in Manchester.

Shimy · 18/02/2022 09:36

Storm Dudley has taken three quarters of my fence, 3 panels were hanging on for dear life yesterday and I haven’t yet checked what’s happened to them now. Another unexpected expense. Next doors dog has already popped round and pooed.

singingstones · 18/02/2022 09:39

It's very blowy here in S Wales this morning - opened the door to let the dog out and all I could hear was wind, sirens and what sounded like bins getting blown down the street Shock

I'd really like to walk down to see the sea but we have been told firmly not to do that.

Sorry Shimy but chuckling at next door's dog popping over Smile
Our fence too is hanging on for dear life after Dudley.

icanbewhatiwant · 18/02/2022 09:46

Dh and I have just been on a dog walk. It's very windy, but not too bad yet. I think it's supposed to be worse here from midday. Ds1 messaged me earlier. For his dissertation he has to catch mice and voles in little traps full of food, then analyse their droppings (after releasing them) He set about 40 traps in some woods last night and needs to go and release whatever he's caught today. He was worried about going in the wind. He's not allowed to leave them in traps until tomorrow. I suggested taking someone and going early, but everyone was asleep. So he's gone alone. He's sent me his location on WhatsApp and seems to be moving about. Hopefully all will be done before the bad wind arrives. I did ask if he'd heard there was going to be a storm, apparently not.

Dh thinks I'm being silly not taking the dc's to the cinema later. But not sure I want to if the weather gets worse. It's about 45 mins drive. I think I'd rather lose the money than risk an accident. We are in the Amber area. So not as bad as those of you in the red area. I hope everyone stays safe.

icanbewhatiwant · 18/02/2022 09:48

@Shimy yes..that made me smile about the dog. He's obviously claiming your garden too.

Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 10:16

@Fiddlersgreen you are young! I was mid teens don’t remember that much about it - perhaps boys were more important at the time. Had a friend at uni flat 3-4 years later that told us an amazing story about the storms - her father got hurt by falling trees and when the family rocked up at the hospital they found he’d led a double life and his other family were there too!! How nuts is that ?!?

Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 10:18

@icanbewhatiwant what’s the degree he’s doing that sounds really interesting

Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 10:23

Goodness so many of you are so young - I have to remember my middle one is 22 today so I’m allowed to be older! He’s on location at Blenheim this week so early starts and the weather is playing havoc with the schedules but he’s happy so that’s what counts - seeing him for dinner out tomorrow x

icanbewhatiwant · 18/02/2022 10:25

@Fruitygal Biology. He needs to analyse the droppings to look for parasites, he weighs and measures them too. Only 4 mice caught today. I think he said he needs 100 altogether. So he has to keep doing it again, I think he's caught about 40 altogether. There is a special area in the woods not far from the university, the mice and voles have food put out. So it is used for other things too.

crazycrofter · 18/02/2022 10:26

Ds’ school have now said year 11s will be released at 12 - which is the time the storm will be worst here apparently Shock I don’t want to go out but I’m dubious as to whether the double deckers will be running?

Hope ds gets back safely @icanbewhatiwant!

Seeline · 18/02/2022 10:31

We're in the new red area. It's definitely very blowy, but just heard a bus go by and can't see any damage, although we're still confined to the house. I hope nothing blows away as we won't be able to go and reclaim anything 😁

Monkey2001 · 18/02/2022 10:33

@Fruitygal wow at the double life - the stuff of TV dramas!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 18/02/2022 10:37

It’s pretty bad here. All schools closed, no trains or buses etc.
I could here cap stones from our roof sliding down and smashing as I lay in bed earlier.
Our chickens are locked in their hen house - they are bantams and would get blown away!
DH was picked up for work at 7.30am but it wasn’t too bad then. Hope he gets home ok.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 18/02/2022 10:37

hear

ChristopherTracy · 18/02/2022 10:48

We aren't travelling to Nottingham today so rebooked for a school dat in March. I'm quite relieved really.

Oblomov22 · 18/02/2022 10:50

Sorry Shimy but that really made me laugh too. 💩

Shimy · 18/02/2022 10:51

@singingstones. & @icanbewhatiwant Yes, I can see the funny side of it. She’s a dear little dog really, although she barked at me when I came out into garden. I think she’s a little bit confused where the boundaries are and just thinks it’s all her garden now and i’m Just visiting. She came over for a stroke though Smile.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/02/2022 11:00

The wind has arrived! We’ve just moved the cars away from this tree which has split down the middle in the wind!!
