This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

All the schools round here are closed for tomorrow. Popcorn our house is c115yrs old so the red alert bulletin saying about roofs blowing off is really frightening me. I also have reminded DH, DD, my dad etc to charge phones up and be prepared for power cuts - had one last week for several hours and the lights have been flickering on and off today and yesterday 😟 Eek!

Stay safe everyone 😀🤞🤞

sofakingcool · 17/02/2022 18:33

I'm really relieved DS's college have cancelled lessons tomorrow. Vast majority of students commute in on double deckers Shock, so they feel it isn't safe - thankfully!!

sofakingcool · 17/02/2022 18:35

DS would have been blown down a 60mph tree lined dual carriageway

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/02/2022 18:39

@ZittiEBuoni hopefully no major incidents occur!

@AnneOfCleavage we get quite regular power cuts here but usually short lived - at worst it's been about 4-5 hours. I'm hoping we escape anything worse than that.

Yes I hope everyone stays safe and their homes stay intact!!

cariadambyth · 17/02/2022 18:39

School is closed tomorrow here too, they have said they’ll be setting some work but it seems fairly low key with no live lessons which I’m really pleased about as my two are shattered and more than ready for half term. The only slight frustration is that DS has been fitted with a 48 hour heart monitor this afternoon, I don’t know if any of you remember my indulgent ramblings about him a few weeks ago. I think the data would have been much more useful had he been in school doing PE and rugby training, now it’ll just show a lot of aimless wondering and PlayStation!
I do hope everyone stays safe in our various parts of the country.

KingscoteStaff · 17/02/2022 19:43

@Fruitygal Breakfast: Cafedral (really lovely), Flat White (but queues, obvs), Chapters (on Elvet Bridge opposite Klutes)
Dinner: Whitechurch Pub (Opposite the Billy B library), Akarsu (Turkish), Marco Pierre White (too expensive to waste on students, but lovely!)

Fonty · 17/02/2022 19:48

Our council has just sent an email saying bin collections are suspended tomorrow. Brings back memories of 1987. 😦 monkey that’s a really, really long drive. Be careful x

Fruitygal · 17/02/2022 20:15

@KingscoteStaff DD loves Turkish and Thai so a turkish is a real plus - thanks so much for Breakfast ideas too - Cafedral is being checked out by DD as we speak!

ProggyMat · 17/02/2022 20:40

@Fruitygal if Thai is a favourite then Zen
A quick around the corner nip through to DSU building and across Kingsgate bridge ( to stay on previous convos about architecture 😱)
River view kitchen for breakfast.

ProggyMat · 17/02/2022 20:51

Should add-across the bridge will take you to Palace Green!
Multi tasking rather badly Blush

Fruitygal · 17/02/2022 20:52

Thanks @ProggyMat added to the lists !! DD excited - found a nice Air BNB x Which Year is your DC in ?

icanbewhatiwant · 17/02/2022 21:21

My dc's finished today for half term. So no school anyway. I rarely take them anywhere and I'm working next week, so booked the cinema for tomorrow. I didn't think about the storm coming when I booked earlier in the week. Not sure we will be going now. I'll see what the wind is like. I don't think east anglia will be too bad compared to the south and west.

ExtremelyDelighted · 17/02/2022 21:40

DS is on half term this week so no school anyway. DD's school is still opening which I'm a little concerned about, getting there might not be much fun. I have secured garden stuff as best I can. Bins tucked away. I have also put the file with all the passports, insurances etc at the ready too.

I slept through 1987 in my flat in West London. Remember putting the radio on in the morning and wondering what on earth they were talking about.

icanbewhatiwant · 17/02/2022 21:56

I was at school back in '87. We had the day off which pleased me, I slept through it too. It wasn't as bad in Surrey where I lived compared to where we live now. Dh said the electricity went off for almost 2 weeks. They had no water either (electric pump) with 2 pre school aged children I can imagine it was difficult.

Monkey2001 · 17/02/2022 22:01

Bristol got off lightly in 1987, but my mum's car in North London was crushed by a tree (it was parked and insured, so could have been worse). ED you must have been a good sleeper, I think West London took quite a pounding!

DoggerelBank · 17/02/2022 22:12

Good luck tomorrow, everyone. I was working in a boarding prep school in 1987. We were completely cut off for days - numerous trees across the long drive, and a power cut that went on and on. Bed time by candelight was quite an adventure, but the pile of unwashed laundry (for which I was responsible) and the lack of clean clothes was getting pretty alarming by the time things went back to normal.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/02/2022 22:14

I’m from West London and was in 6th form in 87. I slept right through the storm and I woke up the next morning to chaos and many cars with trees on them!

Fferny1 · 17/02/2022 22:20

I'm worried about dd1 in Somerset. The Vet School is closed apparently, but I'm not sure how sturdy their bungalow is.
I've told them to sort out candles/water & charge up everything
The last storm here meant we had no water/ electricity for 36 hours.

ZittiEBuoni · 17/02/2022 22:46

I was in Bristol in 1987 also Monkey2001 (first year at university) but DH was further south and was literally blown over.

Luckily he survived Grin.

Fferny, a bungalow in Somerset does sound a bit dicey at the moment. Very much hoping all will be well for them.

Seeline · 17/02/2022 22:55

Bit concerned about DS at UWE. They've said all lectures on line tomorrow.
I'd just started my first term at Plymouth in 87, and we only had a bit of a breeze. I came home to S London for a weekend shortly after and couldn't believe the number of trees lost in local roads and parks!

Heifer · 17/02/2022 23:34

During 87 storms I was 19 and in Bermuda for a 3 week holiday visiting my brother and playing in a hockey tournament. I had missed really bad storms there by 1 week and too. Felt very lucky at the time.

Looks like we were South of the bads winds yesterday and hoping we are North of tomorrows.. We have cancelled DH gardening round though as it still doesn't look great even if not really bad. DD has a inset day tomorrow so is currently out in Liverpool nightlife as I type...

I have to attend inset day albiet for 45 mins and have to walk so hoping winds aren't too bad as I live in a conservation area with LOTS of trees and high garden stone walls..

Hope everyone keeps safe and no property damage either.

Fiddlersgreen · 17/02/2022 23:44

I lived in south west London in 87 too however I was 3!! I have memories of my parents taking me to Bushy Park (must have been a few days later) and seeing all the fallen trees

Volterra · 18/02/2022 06:19

I was in Bristol in 1987 working in household insurance company at the time, busy few days ! DS’s college shut early yesterday to get the boarders home so he is tucked up in bed here. Bit worried about my Stepmum in Bristol and hope nothing goes wrong for her as she really needs a period of calm at the moment .

ExtremelyDelighted · 18/02/2022 07:06

Well, we're in a red area now. Not too bad at the moment.

Oblomov22 · 18/02/2022 07:26

I don't particularly remember the storms of 1987. Thanks for the Durham food suggestions.
