Thread 27 Covid Cohort Snow or Like Spring? Let's Do This Thing!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 21/01/2022 14:21

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Wow @Alsoplayspiccolo that is amazing!!!

Piggywaspushed · 02/02/2022 17:47

Birthdays, bursaries offers etc. Celebrated duly!

A boy I teach ahs been awarded a rising star bursary and a girls gave me a book she has self published. This has cheered me up because a shit thing happened at work today and then, when I came, home DS told me he had pulled the blind off the window.

ZittiEBuoni · 02/02/2022 17:56

Great news, AlsoPlaysPiccolo, always love to hear about musicians and their successes.

GoldenRuby · 02/02/2022 17:59

Can I join, belatedly? It is so lovely hearing of all of the offers and successes on her. DD needs some MN luck. She put her application in at the start of November but only has one offer so far. She knew that most of the places she is applying to have a reputation for offering late, but it is unsettling when lots of her friends are holding multiple offers. She has also failed her driving test twice as she goes to pieces with nerves when it counts. She is also struggling with her mental health at the moment, and really needs a win to take her into her mocks with some confidence.

She wants to study Social Anthropology & Geography, which is a combination not offered in many places. She has applied to St Andrews, Edinburgh, Durham (Anth & Sociology), Exeter (Flexible combined honours, Anth & Geog), and Sussex. Offer of ABB (BBB if firmed) from Sussex - but she has decided it is too close to home and she doesn't want to go there.

EwwSprouts · 02/02/2022 18:00

@Alsoplayspiccolo Fabulous news! Congratulations.

@Piggywaspushed Impressed at the self-publishing. Hope you have a relaxing evening.

York sent out 'You are fantastic' cards snail mail a couple of weeks ago which was novel but no sniff of a Haribo at the two general open days DS has attended.

singingstones · 02/02/2022 18:20

Welcome @GoldenRuby
This thread does seem to have some magic powers, I hope they work for your DD and that she gets the boost she needs. It's a rough time for them, such a long wait Sad

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 02/02/2022 18:25

Welcome @goldenruby!

@Alsoplayspiccolo that is brilliant news 👏

Happy double lasagne birthday to little @Oblomov22 ds

ealingwestmum · 02/02/2022 18:31

Hello GoldenRuby!

PaddingtonPaddington · 02/02/2022 18:35

Amazing news @Alsoplayspiccolo. Congratulations to your DS!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 02/02/2022 18:36

Welcome, GoldenRuby! Those are fantastic uni choices! Sorry to hear your DD is struggling with MH; mine is too and it’s very hard to know how to help her. As for driving, she hasn’t started lessons, as she has ADHD and is scared of learning to drive (and we’re terrified at the thought of her being behind the wheel!!)

Thanks for all the congratulations for DS - he smiled quietly and said he’d like to go. Smile

Alsoplayspiccolo · 02/02/2022 18:37

Lasagne sounds like my kind of birthday meal, Oblomov - happy birthday to your DS!

Monkey2001 · 02/02/2022 18:48

Hello @GoldenRuby. Unfortunately she has chosen a batch of later offerers! DS's GF has offers from all of hers except Edinburgh and Exeter. Lots waiting for Durham. I think I have heard of 1 Georgraphy at St A but, like Durham, I think they do contextual offers first.

Just pity us poor medics who won't hear until March or later - last year some were May. Loads of time to think about what you could have said in interview!

However, this thread has magic powers, so expect something soon now that you have harnessed that magic!

Fonty · 02/02/2022 18:49

@Alsoplayspiccolo Huge congratulations. That’s amazing news. He must be thrilled!
@Oblomov22 Enjoy your lasagne tonight Smile & happy bday to DS.
@GoldenRuby Welcome to the thread. My DS is waiting for offers from the exact same unis you are. I feel your pain, but this group are super supportive.
Also as a general add on I also have a DD (20) & DS who fight/argue sarcastically most of the time. It’s very draining & our lowest point was being escorted out of the Great Hall on Ellis Island after DS (16 at the time)for reasons known only to himself, decided to throw/spin DD(18 at the time) around the floor, dropping her & a peached iced tea everywhere. There was only one other couple there who were staring at us in horror. It was supposed to be a big hol celebrating significant bdays. This was after them arguing all the way there about mobile data. We were there for 17 minutes & I vowed never to take them on a family holiday ever again……

Shimy · 02/02/2022 18:59

@Alsoplayspiccolo Congratulations Star, that's amazing news, how excited your DS must be.

@Piggywaspushed You must be so proud of them! all the best.

General consensus seems there are no freebies for this yrs lot. Oh well! at least they have f2f lectures to look forward to and full uni life, beggars can't be choosers.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 02/02/2022 19:01

Oh, Fonty Shock
That’s exactly the sort of behaviour we get from our 2, especially in public! Blush

GoldenRuby · 02/02/2022 19:22

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Such lovely solidarity.

ealingwestmum · 02/02/2022 19:28

Oh Fonty 😱

Isthisjustnormal · 02/02/2022 19:28

Happy double lasagne day to @Oblomov22junior; and huge congratulations to young @Alsoplayspiccolo! And welcome @GoldenRuby. Ds heard today from Exeter so hopefully your Ds will be hearing soon too. I don’t know what the offer is as he ‘hasn’t had time’ to check yet! Exeter is his least preferred in terms of the course, but even so! It’s like leaving post unopened: personally I couldn’t do it!!

BlueMarigold · 02/02/2022 19:32

Welcome @GoldenRuby!

Congratulations @Alsoplayspiccolo!

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 02/02/2022 19:54

Dd currently recording her vocal audition piece for Southampton...she gas Grade 8 already, this is probably just to prove and also to assess for small scholarship....send the thread magic this way please!

A young man she has been chatting to has done his interview with them already, he got a BBB offer but played lots of different instruments and was heavily involved in lots of different 'scenes'. It would be lovely if they could give Dd that offer but we need lots of luck !

22Newnames · 02/02/2022 19:55

Welcome @GoldenRuby. We are in the same boat (well DS is but it definitely feels like ‘us’!). He has heard from 1 out of 5. Applied late Nov/early Dec, I can’t remember exactly when but it feels like a long time ago.
We are waiting for Bath, Warwick, Durham and Nottingham (although that was only added just before the deadline). Different subject, engineering, but the waiting is the same and very frustrating. I know they are late offerers but still just want to hear from them either way 😬

crazycrofter · 02/02/2022 20:31

Welcome @goldenruby! Good news about the Exeter offer @Isthisjustnormal, even if he's not bothered!

I'm just about to wade through dd's history coursework to try to cut 300 words from it. I spent 2 and a half hours looking at it yesterday, most of which was spent trying to work out what on earth the opening paragraph was trying to say and the relevance of the seemingly random quotes from historians. When I finally spoke to dd about it, she said 'oh, I didn't really understand the question when I wrote the introduction, that's why it doesn't make any sense!' Fortunately, the rest of the essay seemed a bit more coherent; I just need to cut down on the waffle...

ealingwestmum · 02/02/2022 20:38

Fingers crossed Orange, good luck to her securing a scholarship offer!

singingstones · 02/02/2022 20:43

Good luck to Orange DD! 🎤🍀

Fiddlersgreen · 02/02/2022 20:44

Oh wow @Alsoplayspiccolo that’s brilliant!!
