Thread 27 Covid Cohort Snow or Like Spring? Let's Do This Thing!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 21/01/2022 14:21

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@Monkey2001 but Class Civ is not ‘Classics’ ?
Thanks for the heads up on OCR publishing the stats per subjects that fall under the umbrella that is ‘Classics’
Could you give me a link so I can check out Ancient History, Latin and Classical Greek, please?

crazycrofter · 07/02/2022 21:07

@Piggywaspushed dh is also funny about paying to stay over somewhere, even though Southampton are reimbursing our travel costs as dd is an access student! He’s insisting on coming too, on the promise that he will not instigate any contentious discussions all day (Nottingham visit was dominated by a row about BLM! )

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/02/2022 21:20

We have 20 odd posts left on this one. I've popped a new thread up for when we need it

linky to new thread

icanbewhatiwant · 07/02/2022 21:29

@Monkey2001 @crazycrofter mine says hardly anything been removed from history. I wonder which it is, or possibly different boards. Ds is AQA.

Oh I forgot travel expenses! We got those 3 years ago - Hull, and Aberystwyth.

ChristopherTracy · 07/02/2022 21:33

We are treating it as a jolly and going up the night before to Nottingham. We will have a chance to go out to eat in the evening before as well so we can see what the city itself is like.

crazycrofter · 07/02/2022 21:33

That’s odd @icanbewhatiwant dd does AQA. Maybe it’s about expectations? I don’t think dd knew this was coming. But she definitely showed me a before and after list of topics which was much reduced?

ChristopherTracy · 07/02/2022 21:33

DS thinks nothing changed in maths and physics but some gone in CS.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 07/02/2022 21:39

crazy, is DS doing combined trilogy science? Higher?
If so, am I right in thinking whole swathes of biology has gone, but only parallel circuits and a couple of other bits for physics, and not much for chem either?

crazycrofter · 07/02/2022 21:45

Yes @Alsoplayspiccolo that’s how it looks to me! But ds has been off school today so he hasn’t had a teacher’s opinion

icanbewhatiwant · 07/02/2022 21:55

@crazycrofter yes, strange. Ds said the teacher showed them and hardly anything has been removed. He said his year are studying 2 topics. Nazis and Stuart's. Perhaps other schools are studying other topics that have been removed.

That would be incredibly unfair.
None of this seems right at all.

Monkey2001 · 07/02/2022 22:23

Our school does OCR H505 History. I only have DS's word for it that half the syllabus has gone!

crazycrofter · 07/02/2022 22:24

Dd is just doing two topics too but different ones to @icanbewhatiwant ds. Both topics are still examined, but things like foreign policy in 1970s US won’t be examined (that was the example she gave).

NCTDN · 07/02/2022 22:26

@Piggywaspushed

There is no way DH would spend any money on staying somewhere overnight to go to an offer holder day...
We need to get to Bristol for an offer holder day and there and back in a day isn't feasible. I wish I could find something for £50!!
Monkey2001 · 07/02/2022 22:40

@NCTDN have you tried the Travelodge website? There are several low cost ones round the edge of Bristol (Cribbs, Filton). I think they are brilliant for comfortable beds even if the buildings aren't beautiful! Family rooms can be £50, not as good as an apartment, but does the job.

NCTDN · 07/02/2022 22:47

I think it will be travelodge but would have preferred to be nearer to the centre.

Fferny1 · 07/02/2022 22:48

Yes, Travelodge's or Premier Inn's are generally really good value. We always stayed in one close by for uni interview dates

GoldenRuby · 07/02/2022 22:51

@Seeline DS is in his final year at UEA (assuming he passes!). He lived in the Village in his first year, which was a really good option as it was only 15 mins from the big Aldi, and better kitchens than most of the on campus accommodation. It only took him 7 to 8 minutes to get to the Sportspark.

ExtremelyDelighted · 08/02/2022 06:57

DS phoned me last night and knew what bits of his history (Edexcel) had been dropped - seemed to be time periods out of each module eg Crimean War dropped out of Evolution of Warfare. DD (y11) said her teachers would talk to them today because they hadn't all caught up with it with some info not being released till later in the day. Can't remember her boards off the top of my head.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 08/02/2022 08:34

Double thread posting here...to continue the convo...

Dd not happy about Sociology OCR, totally confused about English Lit AQA (I thought was mainly more choice of questions) and pleased with set work notification for Music Edexcel. I think 🤔 .

I also think that I worked out that at least 50% of exam entries for her subjects should be awarded a B. If she ends up with BBB she'll be OK and still get to her faves I think.

Piggywaspushed · 08/02/2022 16:17

I thought OCR sociology was brilliant. Tell her to have a look at AQA or Eduqas... might cheer her up! What is she not happy about precisely?

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 08/02/2022 17:01

Well this is it @Piggywaspushed I suspect she was just moaning for the sake of it ! This involved sending grumbling 'voice notes' to friends via whatsapp/snapchat , at which point I thought she was moaning to me! She just kept on saying she couldn't see much taken out, I didn't take much notice as I just said that she must wait to get her teacher's view.
