This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Happy birthday to those with birthdays. Ds2 wanted me to cook stew for his birthday...he's not a great fan of stew, but with his typical sense of humour, stew is ds3's worst dinner, so Ds2 chose stew for that reason. Ds3 doesn't like any of it, he will eat the dumplings as long as I make sure there is no evidence of gravy. But nothing else. Ds2 will only eat the meat, carrots and dumplings, he picks out the other veg, he hates potato too. Yet chose to be evil to his brother over take away 🤣

22Newnames · 02/02/2022 11:31

If only DS had more than one offer to put on a mug... Grin (Saying that with humour but underlying frustration at the wait!)

We also have two evenings with separate groups of friends descending on the house but nothing too massive.

22Newnames · 02/02/2022 11:32

That is hilarious on the stew for @icanbewhatiwant's DS!

Monkey2001 · 02/02/2022 11:50

@icanbewhatiwant, although it is a funny story, that must have been really upsetting for you. I think these behaviours become habits which are so hard to break. Both of mine can be shockingly rude to me out of habit. I used to see my nieces' affection for each other with a bit of sadness, but things change! Having girlfriends to observe behaviour has made them more aware. It really will get better as they grow up.

Happy b'day to Oblomov's DS. It's a lovely day today too, hope the weather is nice where you are, it's sunny and warm here.

Fferny1 · 02/02/2022 12:03

Being that evil requires a certain amount of forethought @icanbe 😂 He will probably go far.

@oblomov so your DS's 18th will go down in family folklore as the two lasagna birthday then 👏
I love the paper clip & quavers present list - so cute ❣️

Well it's taken me several calls to get thru' to Aberystwyth undergraduate enquiries. I was beginning to think there's no one out there ... and the uni is just a mirage. I eventually got to talk to an overburdened earnest young man who knew I'd phoned & left a message yesterday.

@anneofcleavage on the face of it that would be a really good suggestion, but I think sadly Ds has said no to a scribe as he finds it all too distracting.
We've tried a reader & using a laptop but they didn't really work for him either as it interrupted his concentration. He really is very contrary.

Shimy · 02/02/2022 13:30

Has anyone received any of those freebies that unis usually give out to offer holders through the post to try and sway them? we had great fun in DS1's yr (2019) comparing what we had received. DS got some plastic sunglasses from Swansea and one of those airtight thermo cups but some, got vouchers, box of goodies, air pods? (it was a bumper yearGrin) all sorts.
So far we haven't received anything but just wondered whether anyone else had.

Seeline · 02/02/2022 13:44

No freebies here - only got a couple of tote bags at open days, none of the goodies that DS got when I did open days with him in 2019 - notebooks, pens, keyrings, vouchers and so much haribo!!

Shimy · 02/02/2022 13:55

@Seeline Looks like the only freebies this lot will be the UCAS notification of an offer of a place Hmm. I miss the good old days Sad.

Zebracat · 02/02/2022 14:20

Happy lasagna birthday to Oblomov junior.
@ 22 new names,a very popular present here was a Japanese box of snacks. I understand other themes are also available.

Zebracat · 02/02/2022 14:22

We also did some of th3 small uni stuff, a sewing kit, portable mirror, wash bag etc

Alsoplayspiccolo · 02/02/2022 14:27

DS’s audition day seems to have gone really well, thanks for asking, singing.
He enjoyed it and the panel were complimentary about him, and he got to meet and chat with some of the other applicants.
He’s told us he wants to go, if he gets an offer; we’ve put in our bursary application, so will just have to see whether they want him.
It’s a fantastic school and I’m sure he would thrive there, and boarding for 6th form seems like a very good prep for uni…but I will admit to having a few tears in private at the thought of a childless house in September. Sad
And aside from the bursar issue, his current school has been a complete joy for us as a family and I will miss their presence in our lives if he leaves.

singingstones · 02/02/2022 15:20

It's so bittersweet, all of this, isn't it? I thought sending them off to reception was bad.

(Actually it was pretty bad with DS who used to scream "no mummy, no" as he was manhandled into the classroom by the teacher.)

Anyone in the dumps, I recommend booking a holiday, which has been my accomplishment of the day and is very cheering. Now we just have to hope DS and friends can get themselves home from their first unaccompanied foreign trip just before we go away as a family Confused

Alsoplayspiccolo · 02/02/2022 15:44

The power of this group strikes again…

…just had an email, offering him a full scholarship. Shock

ChristopherTracy · 02/02/2022 15:49

Amazing @Alsoplayspiccolo!!!

singingstones · 02/02/2022 16:00

Wow what fantastic news - congratulations to him Also! 👏👏

icanbewhatiwant · 02/02/2022 16:02

@Shimy no freebies here. Ds1 didn't get any freebies in 2019 either.

@Alsoplayspiccolo great news.

ealingwestmum · 02/02/2022 16:04

That is fantastic Piccolo, very well done to him!

crazycrofter · 02/02/2022 16:11

That’s amazing @Alsoplayspiccolo, he must have really impressed them!

Feeling a bit Sad for you though to be losing them both at the time, as my two are the same ages. The holidays are long though and will he be able to come home for weekends?

KingscoteStaff · 02/02/2022 16:41

That is fantastic Piccolo - well done him!

AnneOfCleavage · 02/02/2022 16:57

Oh wow @Alsoplayspiccolo that is fantastic news. Well done to your DS.

Happy birthday to @Oblomov22's DS - enjoy the lasagna 🎂

Love the uni mugs @Monkey2001

No offer holder goodies here either. Got a couple of tote bags with stuff in on open days: pens, metal straw, drink bottle etc but only from two and the same two had cool snack vans with doughnuts etc. they were the first two unis we visited so DD kinda expected cool stuff from them all so was disappointed with a carrier bag with just the itinerary from Sussex 😂 and no free snacks.

ProggyMat · 02/02/2022 17:20

Fabulous news @Alsoplayspiccolo
Well done to your DS! Star

AnneOfCleavage · 02/02/2022 17:27

@Fferny1 I hope you don't mind but I've just sent you a pm 😀

Isthisjustnormal · 02/02/2022 17:33

Happy double lasagne day to @Oblomov22 juniors S huge congrats on that amazing offer @Alsoplayspiccolo!!
We’ve not had any goodies so far, @Shimy: I hadn’t realised it was a thing!

Wheresthebeach · 02/02/2022 17:36

Oh that's fabulous @Alsoplayspiccolo. Celebrations tonight!
