Thread 27 Covid Cohort Snow or Like Spring? Let's Do This Thing!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 21/01/2022 14:21

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@BlueMarigold thanks. I will tell him to check on ucas page. Ds1 had to pick accommodation choices for UEA up to 8 choices. But he wasn't allocated any until after results day. I heard that those with unconditional offers had their first choice way before results, there seemed to be quite a few unconditional that year. Ds was given his 5th choice, he was annoyed at the time, but at least he had en-suite like he wanted. But the accommodation wasn't very nice, the new block with much nicer accommodation, where he'd like to have been was only a few £'s more a week. Plus there was another group of flats he preferred that were cheaper, though further from campus centre, also much nicer. I'm sure there will be places ds1 wants to be at his first choice, but won't get. I shall pre warn him not to expect his top choices.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 31/01/2022 14:56

Thanks all, @Shimy no, he's still waiting on Warwick and York but only really interested in them as potential insurance (although I think unlikely to offer anything different to standard offer.) Notts is his first choice and always has been. I'm going to encourage him to just firm it and not bother waiting for the other two.

Well done to your DS on the Durham offer @singingstones.

22Newnames · 31/01/2022 15:13

Well done @singingstones and sorry about the rejection @JustHereWithMyPopcorn

@BlueMarigold Bath does have a very big hill up to campus. I can count on one hand the amount of times I walked up that hill in 4 years, everyone gets the bus.

We are still waiting on 4 Bath, Durham, Warwick and Nottingham (but that was a last minute addition). It is very frustrating, I just wish they would let him know one way or the other.

Shimy · 31/01/2022 15:34

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn He's got some great choices there so onwards and upwards. Surprised you haven't heard from those two. DS got an offer from W in december. Warwick will be his first choice. York I thought sent out their offers quite early but I'm must be mistaken. We are still waiting on Bath (getting a bit fed, to be honest).

crazycrofter · 31/01/2022 16:23

Still waiting on Bath here too!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 31/01/2022 16:39

@Shimy No idea what's taking so long, very popular course / too competitive maybe? He seems like an appropriate candidate on paper so not sure why the wait otherwise.

UCL rejected on the fact his predicted grades weren't high enough (AAA instead of A*AA), they knew that back in November so not sure why they didn't just say that then.

@22Newnames, you must be really fed up with the waiting!

Piggywaspushed · 31/01/2022 16:40

@Zebracat

Good morning. Dd tested positive this morning, and seems quite upset, thinking that we will all get really ill and die and that it will be her fault for going to a party.I’m surprised by it, wonder if anxiety is a symptom? , impending doom sort of thing. I’m also wondering if what I had last week was Covid even tho I tested negative twice. We have a really busy week planned,so it’s all very awkward, Even though we are able to move freely, I won’t feel comfortable babysitting my granddaughter, seeing my diabetic friend inside tonight or lunching in a pub tomorrow so I don’t know what to do now.
zebra , impending doom is a thing. I had it.
22Newnames · 31/01/2022 17:02

Yep, very fed up with it. To be fair we have always known Bath, Warwick and Durham offer very late but it is very frustrating.

BlueMarigold · 31/01/2022 17:46

I know quite a few people waiting on these last three.

EwwSprouts · 31/01/2022 18:05

@Zebracat Sorry to hear your DD has Covid and is carrying the weight of the world. Fingers crossed it's short-lived.

I hope those who received Oxbridge offers get on and firm their choices and then a ripple effect may follow.

Chewbecca · 31/01/2022 18:07

Still waiting for St Andrews here too - traditionallly late apparently!

kiwiandcherries · 31/01/2022 18:10

DD had another offer through today, lower points than the others so far, so a nice back up plan maybe?
We are still waiting to hear from one after an interview and her original top choice haven't even invited to interview/rejected yet. They actually sent out a lot of letters in error and seem to in a bit of administration chaos! Getting impatient with the waiting now, especially as so many places have opened up for accommodation choices!

BlueMarigold · 31/01/2022 18:49

@kiwiandcherries Congratulations on the offer!

Shimy · 31/01/2022 18:50

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn
'there's safety in numbers' re: Bath. At least we're not the only ones, I'm just starting to get a bit twitchy what with some unis starting to release their accommodations etc, so we need to know whether he's got Bath or not so he can firm and insure and more importantly we want to sort out his disability forms.

Decorhate · 31/01/2022 19:06

Still waiting for the last two here. I’m surprised so many are waiting to hear from Bath. When ds1 applied they were the first to offer, within a week I think. Mind you his course is not overly popular.

Dd who finished at Leeds last year now has the date for her graduation in April. If there are no offer holder days before then at least Ds will have a chance to have a look around then. And we could potentially nip over to Sheffield too.

singingstones · 31/01/2022 19:47

Just to clarify it's not DS who has a Durham offer, it's his girlfriend. Wouldn't want to mislead the House Smile

Shimy · 31/01/2022 19:54

I know some may think i'm being unreasonable (and I know I am!) but....isn't 'The Student room' the biggest bragfest you ever came across? Grin, I just went on there to see what's happening with Bath, as you do, and pocked around a little.....

'What are your STATS? (that alone rattles my teeth)

SmileSmile aka smug.

The student room can't be a very friendly place for those with anything less than stellar quals.

BlueMarigold · 31/01/2022 20:06

@shimy IKWYM! There’s a lot of focus on the top courses.

Fonty · 31/01/2022 20:49

Been off for a couple of days, & the thread has moved so quickly. Congrats Kiwi & others on your offers/auditions (apologies for not being organised to give everyone a shout out). Sorry about UCL Popcorn. I’m sitting here lurking on TSR to see if there are any updates. Glad it’s not just me @Shimy re: the “stats”! Was getting increasingly despondent about the amazing grades & thinking DS has no chance! The waiting is v grim. We’re still waiting for 4 and at least 3 of them will be v late, if they even offer at all. Ho hum, more 🍷 then. Everyone’s news does keep me going though!

It's worse than a MN Oxbridge thread ! Wink Grin
Shimy · 31/01/2022 22:43

@BlueMarigold oh don't let me get started on the courses!

@fonty Ignore the pimple-faced teens. So long as you've checked the entry requirements with the universities. Remember TSR is just a tiny sample of students.

@Piggywaspushed ...... And they have no filter on there.

Monkey2001 · 31/01/2022 23:33

There are a lot of nice people and kids who need support on TSR, as well as some with great grades and a good few trolls! I have come across a complete cross section of applicants on the medicine threads, some of whom are demanding and entitled, but others are lovely and grateful for support they are not getting from home or school.

Fruitygal · 01/02/2022 06:18

TSR - if you click on the poll about when you submitted your ucas form ( right hand side of screen) it becomes apparent that many kids are Oxbridge, medicine etc as 45% got the form in during October. Helped quite a few genuine kids struggling without school or parent support but there are trolls - 2-3 TSR official helpers work at unis which they promote in their responses (while not being transparent about working there) these 2-3 can be almost as bad as the ‘prestige unis only’ MN crew that frequent the MN badlands outside the kindness in this thread. Called on out Re this and she came for me! I realised later that I know of her already through a friend of a friend who works at the uni she does 😂🤣

BlueMarigold · 01/02/2022 06:38

I am sure TSR is helpful for a lot of people. I didn’t find it overly helpful when looking into Biology or any of the unis my DD was interested in. There’s some information but I feel like the course/unis aren’t competitive enough to get much interest on there. I am getting more support from the Biology parents in this group.

Yes I've found that too!

It's like listening to DS's best friends mum, very proud but can't stop the smugness. Also not subtle...

"Oh my DS wouldn't even contemplate going there!" When talking about DS's choices HmmShock

She's very proud, I get that, but as an adult I kind of expect her to hold back those sort of comments Confused!!
