Thread 27 Covid Cohort Snow or Like Spring? Let's Do This Thing!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 21/01/2022 14:21

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@Oblomov22 I asked a friend whose dd is at Nottingham and got in through clearing. She was obviously very late but still got her first choice accommodation at Broadgate Park. So it may just be the catered stuff that is more popular?

Oblomov22 · 31/01/2022 07:15

Thanks Crazy...... hmmm.... ponders.....

Fruitygal · 31/01/2022 07:44

@Heifer lots of you tube stuff from students showing the accommodation so DD says it will be East and self catering and using that has her top 4 places chosen already - most look ok or really nice. One of the better places for accommodation but not cheap. Not the place to go if you have a phobia of geese and ducks though :))

Fruitygal · 31/01/2022 07:51

@Oblomov22 - its great news - is that his preferred choice? or would he prefer the job related one? - the contextual ones are given out first after the international ones. If they think Oxbridge applicant then standard offers in some departments appear to come out the week of Cambridge offers. DD is biological sciences and we've only seen 1 standard offer anywhere on the forums so far. She'd like to know either way so she can plan for the next few weeks - currently we are not going to Exeter offer day but she may change her mind if Durham is bad news.

Shimy · 31/01/2022 08:01

Hello all, just popping in to say we’re still waiting to hear from Bath. The wait is so frustrating. Has anyone had notification of offer-day from Warwick? I know some people did but was wondering whether it’s subject specific as DS never got an invite. Congratulations to all those who’ve received more offers.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 31/01/2022 08:10

Anyone know what's going on with the UCAS hub? It was offline yesterday and still is this morning. Very frustrating as DS (and I) want to know what the offer/rejection is that they emailed him about!!

Zebracat · 31/01/2022 08:47

Good morning. Dd tested positive this morning, and seems quite upset, thinking that we will all get really ill and die and that it will be her fault for going to a party.I’m surprised by it, wonder if anxiety is a symptom? , impending doom sort of thing. I’m also wondering if what I had last week was Covid even tho I tested negative twice. We have a really busy week planned,so it’s all very awkward, Even though we are able to move freely, I won’t feel comfortable babysitting my granddaughter, seeing my diabetic friend inside tonight or lunching in a pub tomorrow so I don’t know what to do now.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 31/01/2022 09:14

Oh no @Zebracat, it does sound like an anxiety thing but not caused by Covid maybe just 'another' thing in our DCs lives that's tipped anxiety that's already there? Personally, I'd probably cancel those events but perhaps let the other people involved know and have an input into it?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 31/01/2022 09:14

@zebracat I hope she isn't feeling too unwell with it and recovers quickly.

Fferny1 · 31/01/2022 09:42

@Zebracat I've read that one of the current symptoms for Omicron is feeling really emotional. Poor thing it's not your dd's fault.

Wheresthebeach · 31/01/2022 10:01

Sympathies over the early accommodation issue. That's a bit of a nightmare and really piles on the pressure (in an already pressured year).

Congrats on the Durham offer @Oblomov22. Lovely to have.

@Zebracat - oh your poor DD. When DSD got Covid she was in tears on the phone convinced she had given it to us all, and that as DD and I are asthmatic that we'd get seriously sick and it would be all her fault. The stress around Covid is terrible for everyone. All you can ever do is reassure them that its a virus, and not their fault.

Oblomov22 · 31/01/2022 10:15

Poor Zebra dd!

ChristopherTracy · 31/01/2022 10:26

Evertyhing calm here with DS (still no project work completed but I'm steadfastedly ignoring) but DD it turns out is having a sht time at her school in Year 9 with borderline bullying and really distressed. It's always the way isnt it.

ChristopherTracy · 31/01/2022 10:30

thats interesting @Fferny1. Aw @Zebracat

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 31/01/2022 11:19

Finally got on to UCAS, it's a no from UCL.

ZittiEBuoni · 31/01/2022 11:32

Sorry to hear that, JustHere, after all your tenterhooks waiting for the site to fix itself. Hope your ds isn't too disappointed.

Oh no, Zebracat, your poor dd. Hope she comes through the anxiety quickly (and the Covid too).

My dd has shocked me to the core by suggesting that she might take up running! It's so far out of character I just laughed - from surprise not derision! - and now I feel bad...

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 31/01/2022 11:34

Thanks @ZittiEBuoni, he'll be fine as he doesn't actually want to go there now (would have been nice for an offer though Wink ).

ealingwestmum · 31/01/2022 11:42

That’s a shame JustHere. Good that it wasn’t high on his want to really go to list.

BlueMarigold · 31/01/2022 12:20

Sorry to hear that about UCL @JustHereWithMyPopcorn. It’s good he’s not too upset.

@ZittiEBuoni if my DD suggested something like that I would be looking into the possibility that she was abducted and replaced by aliens.

ZittiEBuoni · 31/01/2022 12:39

Well, I did wonder, BlueMarigold...

Monkey2001 · 31/01/2022 12:58

Zebra maybe you should play up the angle that she might have caught it from you so you don't put her off going out! Poor kids. Sad

Sorry to hear UCL said no @JustHereWithMyPopcorn, I guess we are going to see more rejections coming through on general now as the bigger ones get going.

Re York, widely the website says that people who got offers before 9th December are guaranteed accom if an insurance choice. Seems a bit random and unfair!

ealingwestmum · 31/01/2022 13:02

Gosh, DD hasn’t applied to York or Nottingham etc. I’m really struggling with some of these random rules. So much for fairness for those not having support from schools on sending their UCAS earlier, or allowing DC thinking time prior to deadline!

This is very good to know, thanks crazy

Re Durham - DS's gf got an offer from them a week ago for Chemistry in case that's useful info.

Sorry to hear about UCL Just, and hope she gets better soon with a minimum of stress zebra

Shimy · 31/01/2022 13:58

Sorry to hear about UCL @JustHereWithMyPopcorn, is that the last one you' were waiting on?

Wheresthebeach · 31/01/2022 14:11

Sorry to hear about UCL @JustHereWithMyPopcorn.

@singingstones - congrats on Durham - wonder if offers will finally start coming through. DD has friends who are on tenderhooks.
