I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thank you ealing and crazy. Yes, their attitude seems to be - didn't cope well with the pandemic? Then you'd better rethink your uni plans, loser. Or that's how it felt to him anyway. Not helpful when he feels bad enough about year 12 as it is.

Of course, he may get no offers with his poor AS levels, but at least he's in with a shout. The unis are well within their rights to offer to whomever they like, so no offers will be disappointing but will feel less unfair I think than if his path had been blocked by the school and their "computer says no" approach.

Monkey2001 · 03/12/2021 07:16

That sounds like a result @singingstones. What a stupid school policy, lovely that DS is now fully incentivised to show them they were wrong!

Monkey2001 · 03/12/2021 07:20

I don't think many universities look at AS results any more as England didn't offer them, but the Y12 outcome is easily explained in reference.. Is your DS "re-sitting" the AS units or is he stuck with last year's grades as part of final A level grades?

Monkey2001 · 03/12/2021 07:39

@singingstones also wanted to say that if there are TAGs this year and your school is over cautious on those too, there has been the safety net of autumn exams every year, so not what anyone wants to do, but a safety net if the school did not give the right results.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 03/12/2021 07:43

That has cheered me up immensely, singing! Well done to you, your DS and his tutor for outsmarting the stupid school.

This morning, we have an online meeting with the head, to discuss plans for DS next year. It’s completely coincidental to the bursar situation - the head requested it when we asked for leave of absence to go to the other school’s open day - but now seems like a plum opportunity to voice our disappointment in the way things have been handled.
What’s the betting I cry?! Confused

ealingwestmum · 03/12/2021 07:47

Good luck this morning Piccolo. You’ve been put through the mill, the Head needs the feedback, don’t worry about preempting your emotions.

PaddingtonPaddington · 03/12/2021 07:48

@singingstones great result and tutor. Phew what a relief.

@Alsoplayspiccolo what a horrible bursar.

Managed to take DD for her second covid jab yesterday at a walk in. She’s feeling pretty rough this morning but battling on. Just glad to get it done before Christmas.

Isthisjustnormal · 03/12/2021 07:53

Good luck this morning @Alsoplayspiccolo: great that you’ve got a chance to feedback: I love@Oblomov21’s ‘faux naive’ approach: feeling like you’re stitching the bursar up might help emotionally ;-)

@singingstones : what a brilliant result! Hope you and Ds enjoyed that Gin

singingstones · 03/12/2021 08:03

Thank you all
@Monkey2001 He's not resitting - I don't think anyone is as so much of it wasn't really taught, and they can choose not to have it count towards their A2 grade. The AS grades still have to go on the form though. Hopefully the universities will not take too much notice. Thanks for the advice re TAGs, that's a good point.
Also, from a fellow crier, don't worry about it. You do not have to protect anyone from how strongly you feel. And do take every opportunity to chuck the bursar under the bus when you are talking to the head. Smile

In other news, DH is appearing on The Chase!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 03/12/2021 08:07

Sorry to hear about Bursar attitude @Alsoplayspiccolo. Are they a registered charity?

Great news @singingstones

Good luck Piccolo.

I like Decorated have learnt the hard way re Sen to follow up every conversation with an email 'just to clarify'.

I too am a crier in meetings where my frustration creeps out.

AnneOfCleavage · 03/12/2021 09:09

Good luck with the meeting with the head this morning Alsoplays

That is lovely news singingstones and I think that is a great idea from DS with an annual celebratory recognition of this victory. I will also raise my G &T tonight too 🍸

Yay to Friday and nearly the weekend, although my DH is working this weekend so it's not so exciting for him.

Anyone got any snow where they are?

Monkey2001 · 03/12/2021 09:45

@Alsoplayspiccolo we are all standing at your shoulder, let us know how the meeting with the Head goes. 🤞🤞

Oblomov21 · 03/12/2021 10:11

Monkey my thoughts exactly. Piccolo, Does the Head not knowing he's also dealing with the MN massive? Wink
We're right behind you.

Great result singing.
Also good opportunity to raise the issue - fingers crossed for you.

Such a bloody shame that so many have to 'go to bat' for their kids at schools. It's exhausting.

PaddingtonPaddington · 03/12/2021 11:48

DD has an offer for music (violin) at RWCMD!!! We were certain it was a rejection as she never got a second interview and others had offers a few weeks back. She can’t believe it and is shocked but thrilled. Just booked her on to an offer holder day in December. Standard offer is EE.
Champagne being put in fridge…

singingstones · 03/12/2021 11:55

Amazing news Paddington, many congratulations to her. I know some of the violin teachers there and they are all lovely. If your DD is interested in early music they have Rachel Podger teaching there who is top notch and also teaches at RAM and Juilliard I think.

Brilliant news singingstones and Paddington!!

Good luck with your meeting this morning Alsoplays if it hasn't already happened.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 03/12/2021 12:11

Dd has managed to get them to finally send off her UCAS....without my intervention. Although apparently, she did say something akin to 'My Mum is very involved and would not be satisfied with that answer'. I hadn't thought to school her in the art of negotiation and influencing but will be using the aforementioned tips!

I've warned her she will like get invites to auditions after Jan now. There are two (Sussex and RHU) who don't audition so an offer from them before Christmas might be nice and hopefully centre her thoughts on her mocks in Jan.
