I tried to sing the title... It kind of works...

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to posts about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this goodwill continues.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thank you @Monkey2001, I will mention your point about Bath and ST Andrews to her, she’s more likely to take it on board if it hasn’t come directly from me!! The number of students leaving each weekend is something we’ll need to consider as we’re too far away for that. I’m hoping there’ll be offer holder open days in the new year and that’s definitely something we’ll ask about.

Hattifatteners · 26/11/2021 19:07

Thank you for a new thread@OrangeCinnamonCocktail.
Congratulations for @ProggyMat Jr for an interview ja @Piggywaspushed for an offer.

I am the person responsible for the access arrangements at our school as well as a qualified assessor. I deal with many schools and different schools handle these things differently. Some really well, others less so. Due to the massive increase of extra time applications in recent years, JCQ has tightened their rules considerably this year. Many 6th formers that would have previously qualified for extra time, no longer can have it Hmm

ealingwestmum · 26/11/2021 19:23

Thank you Orange

Alsoplayspiccolo · 26/11/2021 19:35

Yes, Shimy, I watch all those you’ve mentioned, plus Ruby Grainger and Grace Fit.
Love Jack!

ProggyMat · 26/11/2021 19:38

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail Thank you for the new thread with a belting title!
Hope you are taking time for yourself during this awful liminal stage Flowers
Thanks to all that have congratulated DD on her news. She really felt she’d not done well in the CAT and has had a huge wobble about the college she’d applied to.
It’s one more hurdle jumped but of course an interview is not the same as an offer so there’s more managing expectations to be done from my end from now to January.
@Shimy Classics interviews at Oxford commence 6th December for four days. DD is yet to know which day her’s is as yet.
Her college have said that her application will be viewed by other colleges and she could be also called for an interview by others
I think those will commence 13th December
She’s pleased the college she applied to have offered her an interview as whilst Oxford itself is a ‘punt’ the college concerned is much more than that!

Budapestdreams · 26/11/2021 19:45

Congratulations on all the offers. We're still waiting here. Am I right in thinking that Durham are often late in sending out offers?

Shimy · 26/11/2021 20:00

@ProggyMat It all sounds nerve wracking! All the young people applying to Oxbridge on here are terribly brave and confident even if they don't think so themselves. When do they hear whether they've been successful?

ProggyMat · 26/11/2021 20:22

@Shimy I think ‘nerve wracking’ aren’t big enough words tbh but that said Oxford and Cambridge applications, in my mind, ought to be viewed as a ‘punt’ bit like having a cheeky quid each way bet?
Lots of DDs friends are still waiting for news if they have been offered an interview at Oxford for her subject.
Oxford offers go out 11th January- so I believe but I’m rushed off my feet at work at the moment so could be wrong!
Cambridge offer day is later than Oxford but the Cambridge interview offer holders could tell you when their offer day is?

Decorhate · 26/11/2021 20:25

I’ve just realised there is a new thread. I was getting confused by some posts on the other one & now it’s all become clear! Congratulations on the Sheffield offer for your Ds @Piggywaspushed As you said, they’ve been busy over the last couple of days!

Shimy · 26/11/2021 20:41

Proggy
'A Punt' is an accurate description. I was reading on TSR (as you do) someone said they were so glad they got an interview because it was the only place they applied to. I was a bitShock thenHmm. Cambridge offer day I think is the 25th from what I've heard. Good luck to your DD and all those waiting.

crazycrofter · 26/11/2021 20:45

Congrats on the Sheffield offer @Piggywaspushed - and quite a low offer too, which is nice!

@cariadambyth your poor dd, being told she’s getting lazy! This has been such a tiring term for them too.

@Hattifatteners that is actually what DD’s SENCO said about tightening the rules, which makes me think they probably won’t try Sad

Amazingly, after having literally nothing to write in the section ‘why do you want to study psychology?’ yesterday, Dd has watched a TED talk and found inspiration! Just 1500 characters to go now… and that’s mostly going to be about her work experience.

Shimy · 26/11/2021 20:50

CrazyCroft That is so good that she got inspiration from a TED talk. She's a go-getter.

Piggywaspushed · 26/11/2021 20:51

I had no idea there was an offer day. DS has interview 2 Dec. That's a hell of a wait!

Hattifatteners · 26/11/2021 20:53

@crazycrofter it it always worth trying. I normally do. If I have exhausted all the options, then I can hopefully say that I have done right by the students.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 26/11/2021 20:56

Was there someone who was able to get insights to UCAS stats/offer rates two or three threads back?
I just watched the Soton Uni open online from the summer and he said the numbers but it didn't seem to convert...I worked it out at 55% which is a bit worrying...

Oblomov21 · 26/11/2021 21:01

Budapest Durham is notoriously late. Ds says 2 friends got Durham offers today but it's course dependant and both were economics.

Decorhate · 26/11/2021 21:11

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail I can see the section on UCAS which shows the average grades held by successful applicants if that’s any help? Can look next week if you let me know Uni/course.

Volterra · 26/11/2021 21:20

Thank you for the thread Orange

Congratulations to DS on the offer Piggy

EwwSprouts · 26/11/2021 21:25

This is a racing start to the new thread. Love the festive title. Thanks @OrangeCinnamonCocktail

Thanks @singingstones for the updated list.

AnneOfCleavage · 26/11/2021 21:25

Thanks for the thread Orange

Great news on the interviews Proggy and Piggy.

Just learned today that 12-15yr olds can't have their jab until after 90 days after Covid. This is a new development.

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 26/11/2021 21:36

Thank you for the new thread.

Re access arrangements, my DD had to be re-assessed last year pre GCSE, she had a formal diagnosis of dyslexia in year 5 and has had extra time in exams ever since but still had to be re-assessed. However we had adequate warning and it was a few weeks before mocks. I need to check with the SENCO that it still holds for this year (y11, did one GCSE last year). DS has his written into his EHCP so it gets nodded through the system.

DS has had his mock results and was happy with them, so that's a relief, it has been quite a stressful couple of weeks with those and the personal statement.

Hattifatteners · 26/11/2021 21:43

@ExcessiveIyDisorganised as dyslexia is a learning difficulty rather than a medical diagnosis, any assessments done prior Y9 are not valid for exam concessions and therefore reassessment is necessary. When a student has an EHCP the school can grant any access arrangements they see appropriate.

ExcessiveIyDisorganised · 26/11/2021 21:47

Yes, I think that's what the SENCO told me, I remember her mentioning it back when DD joined the school. DS has a medical diagnosis (autism) as well as an SpLD, his needs are far more severe.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 26/11/2021 21:53

Well done to your DS, Piggy - he’s flying!

singingstones · 26/11/2021 22:23

her RS teacher said she’s not thrilled she’s had all 5 universities make her such quick offers as it’s making her lazy and complacent

This would infuriate me too @cariadambyth - honestly what was that teacher thinking?? If she's really worried that your DD's foot is coming off the gas, surely there are ways of raising that without belittling her amazing achievement of 5 offers and insulting her to boot!
