Corona Cohort: Statements Scripted, Grades Predicted

Monkey2001 · 20/09/2021 23:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

From OrangeCinnamonCocktail:

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Well done on the offers! I’m impressed by Birmingham’s efficiency (considering I work for them and they don’t always seem particularly efficient from this side of the fence Grin). But it’s a great university and city, I kind of wish we didn’t live here so my kids could consider it!

Shadedog · 08/10/2021 17:04

DD thinks she's done her PS now and has sent it off for one last look over by end of 6th form. She's used 3997 characters. She seems to think she can't use the exact 4000 for some reason she couldn't articulate. Any idea if that's true?

Ds’s was exactly 4000 in word but when he c&p into UCAS it was 4003 so he had to faff with it again. I was wondering if it was to do with paragraphs or something?

Shimy · 08/10/2021 17:05

Yes, the paragraphs do take up some characters. DS noticed this, so he couldn't but a break in between paragraphs.

Shadedog · 08/10/2021 17:15

Congrats to shimy and piggy’s dss.

Ds submitted his form about 2 weeks ago as per the schools internal deadline but judging by an email from his tutor today she hasn’t done her bit yet. His school have been USELESS. They’ll only look at one draft on a personal statement so ds has sent his off vastly changed from his first draft without anyone seeing it or giving any advice. His academic reference is being written by someone he barely knows and who doesn’t like him, he is an Oxford candidate but they haven’t got any suitable written work for him to send in so he has to do an essay next week under exam conditions for that (was supposed to be today but his teacher “forgot”). There will be no help or support with the aptitude test or interview. It’s the longest of long shots anyway but I just want them to submit the damn form for the benefit of maybe getting a place at a more realistic university. Three of his choices are aspirational (although, technically, below his predicted grades). My nerves are shot to ribbons.

We are on page 38, new thread needed in a few days @OrangeCinnamonCocktail.

I liked "Statements scripted, grades predicted". Another couplet would be nice. Any suggestions? Here are a couple "offers flowing, some not knowing" or "nervous waiting, so frustrating". Any more?

Well done to @Piggywaspushed and @Shimy DSs!!
Fabulous news
@Horace123 I’m sure Exeter and Warwick went into clearing for Classics this year.
Exeter is one of DDs choices along with a lots of her friends that are applying for Classics.
It was very quick to make offers for History last year so fingers crossed they’ll make offers for ‘our lot’ soon!

Piggywaspushed · 08/10/2021 17:27

Mine is policy, politics and economics marigold. AAB is standard offer.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 08/10/2021 17:31

How have we got her again so quickly!

I might conflate your two title ideas if there are no more @Monkey2001.

University news from me, I started an MBA today. The course actually started yesterday but I didn't go because of DM issues...tbh wasn't sure if it was too much to take on. It us supposed to be day release so am giving it a shot (through apprenticeship scheme). I started the day scared, but am now a bit more confident I can a manage it.

Monkey2001 · 08/10/2021 17:35

Wow, that is brave Orange. I started an OU MBA when I was working for them, but it was a lot of work and I dropped out,. Good luck to you!

Flying start for Piggy and Shimy DC! Very exciting.

Orange Go you! Great role modelling for your DC that there's always more learning and growth.

Shimy · 08/10/2021 17:50

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail congrats on starting your MBA. Your going to be super busy over the next year so here's wishing you every success.

@Shadedog Please try not to be too stressed by it all (easier said than done!). I'm quite impressed your ds has been able to do all that by himself and I think that will stand him in good stead whether he gets into Oxford or not.

@Monkey2001 How about, "Grades predicted, Offer Accepted" or something like that.

Heifer · 08/10/2021 17:53

This has got real now "we" have got offers in - I say we, I mean your DS/DD - I feel like we are all in this together :-)

Well done @OrangeCinnamonCocktail

No progress here, DD still not gone further than 1st Draft of PS - still doesn't know Predicted grade for Biology, not sure if the Mocks she has in November will be too late to assist grade as the school like to submit in November. She emailed 1 of her Bio teachers to ask if she could read her reference so she didn't repeat anything they had said, asked what her Predicted grade was , and if a B how could she improve on it - but was passed to the other teacher (she did agree to help her with wording on her PS and offer suggested to her help her improve grade although I think for final grade rather than predicted). DD won't go to the other teacher though so she still won't know.

Unfortunately she seems very interested in her social life coming up as LOTS of 18ths around the corner. lots of outfits to sort out etc.. I know I make her sound flaky when I write about her - she really is a hard worker too but just seems distracted at the moment - she is doing all her work but I think she could be doing more.. Do NOT want to push though.

EwwSprouts · 08/10/2021 17:54

Thread title suggestion - When will they know where they're going to go?

Heifer · 08/10/2021 17:55

I had meant to say Well done @OrangeCinnamonCocktail - I think it's great that you are doing something for you. Hope you enjoy it.

ProggyMat · 08/10/2021 17:58

@Shadedog what subject is your DS hoping to read?
Apologies, if you’ve already mentioned it but it may be worthwhile mentioning it again so we can potentially help/ give suggestions about the ‘AT’ and the required written work,

Shadedog · 08/10/2021 18:09

@ProggyMat it’s history. There is some stuff online about the test, plus he did an online thing with Oxford a few months ago. He’ll be fine but just not as fine as candidates who get the chance to have their teachers help them with past papers etc.
He’s doing the “written work” in his free in Monday. Again, he’ll be fine but I was anticipating a series of essays set over a few weeks with the best being picked, rather than a one off exam conditions essay. It says a piece of normal school work but I don’t think that means “be mega casual and chuck in any old shite”. I just thought they’d be more helpful, especially as the reason he chose to go there rather than say on at school is because they banged on about how much support they gave.

Delphigirl · 08/10/2021 18:16

Ooh just had email confirming there is an actual open day at Cardiff on 23rd Oct if anyone is interested.

Well done @OrangeCinnamonCocktail for starting your MBA

Oblomov21 · 08/10/2021 18:16

Well done Orange!
And Piggy and Shimy ds's on offers.

Seeline · 08/10/2021 18:18

Congratulations for those with offers!
I think school is still sitting on DDs application - no confirmation from UCAS yet.

We're visiting Kent uni tomorrow for an open day - it's not too far from us, so thought it worth a trip!

stoneysongs · 08/10/2021 18:25

Well a lot has happened since I went to Morrison's!

🔔 (in the absence of a gong) congrats to Shimy jr and Piggy jr, great news to be up and running with an achievable offer from a great uni. Shimy, why are you a bit Hmm, is it the bribery encouragement to firm them?

ChristopherTracy · 08/10/2021 18:32

Sigh. DS has done that thing where he accepted a new driving test date in one of those ping apps, his instructor cant do that date so now he doesnt have one at all. Arrgh.

Congrats all on offers btw!

Monkey2001 · 08/10/2021 18:32

@shimy "offer accepted" is AGEs away. At least 7 threads away at our rate! UCAS deadline for selecting Firm and Insurance is 9th June and lots of us may be waiting into May for offers.

OP posts:
ProggyMat · 08/10/2021 18:37

@Shadedog the ‘written work’ for DDs subject are examples of work that have been submitted as part of their A level studies which has been assessed by teachers and I would expect formed part of the predicted grade from the school!
DD handed in an essay a few weeks ago, for ancient history, as part of her course work and is yet to have a mark back.
She thought it was ‘a belta’ Grin and hopes to submit that as one example
The other one will be chosen from work submitted and marked from the end of Yr12.
She’s now getting on with the huge uplift in work, practising her ‘AT’ - past papers are online- her part time job and socialising since the UCAS application has been submitted!
Her subject is not History but hopefully someone who has a DC applying for that subject or a teacher will give advice.

stoneysongs · 08/10/2021 18:44

I like "nervous waiting, so frustrating" btw, as we're all waiting for something, whether that's DC, schools, open days or offers.

Shimy · 08/10/2021 18:44

@Monkey Like i said, or 'something like that'. Maybe Grades predicted, PS's submitted?
