Corona Cohort: Statements Scripted, Grades Predicted

Monkey2001 · 20/09/2021 23:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

From OrangeCinnamonCocktail:

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@ProggyMat He has a new teacher this year and they’ve been working on the NEA so she hasn’t properly marked (or set) anything suitable. The y12 teacher left at Easter and I’m not sure if he has anything suitable from then either and she’s not there to sign the cover sheet etc. Easter to summer was just a fudge of nothing. It’s all been aa bit of a mess. Fingers crossed he’ll do ok on Monday. One good thing is he’s massively grown up and become very self reliant. The College boasts that their kids who do go to university do statistically better in terms of their degree classification than other state schools and also private schools. I can see why because to get to university from “we’ll give your personal statement a quick glance one time only if you badger us” takes a certain amount of gumption. There’s a huge dropout rate, but it’s a huge college so maybe it’s “normal”. It’s been sink or swim but I’m very proud of my little minnow.

icanbewhatiwant · 08/10/2021 18:56

That's great dc's are getting offers.

All ds1's offers were lower if he firmed them. Not sure if that is something a lot of universities do.

Well done @Orange on starting your MBA. I often think I should do some sort of further education. As I'm not well educated like you guys. I've always regretted not bothering with school.

ealingwestmum · 08/10/2021 18:59

Orange: As challenging as all the juggling will be, to focus on you study will be a positive distraction when needed. Enjoy.

ealingwestmum · 08/10/2021 19:02

Ican, I’m in your camp so not all of us! 4 O level passes, but got lucky, there were job opportunities in mid 80s for those that showed a little promise in spite of shit schooling!

ProggyMat · 08/10/2021 19:15

@shadedog and so you should be proud of your little minnow!
Now it’s time to badger those that have given the predictions for his UCAS application and ask what they are prepared to do to ensure he stands a fighting chance for the 15th October submission !
Meanwhile, hopefully someone on this thread will be able to give you more subject specific advice.

icanbewhatiwant · 08/10/2021 20:17

@ealingwestmum I sat the very first GCSEs. I didn't bother to do any coursework apart from my Art. Back then the final grade was 50% exam 50% coursework. I can't believe I had such a don't care attitude back then.

ealingwestmum · 08/10/2021 20:31

Different times. And easier to slip through nets, or bunk off, get in with wrong crowds without school being on it. And so on. But, I don’t think I’d change anything, and whilst our upbringings maybe poles apart, DD is totally ok with mine and DH’s non-academic paths to adulthood. And I look back at school days with nostalgic fondness; think it’s my age!

icanbewhatiwant · 08/10/2021 20:40

@ealingwestmum I would definitely change it if I could go back and I have my time again. On the plus side I was told universities like to have dc's who's parents didn't go to university.

cariadambyth · 08/10/2021 20:43

Congratulations to those with offers. Hearing about them makes it feel very real!

Piggywaspushed · 08/10/2021 20:47

DS has another offer!!!

York AAB or ABB with EPQ at C - no strings...

crazycrofter · 08/10/2021 21:06

Wow @Piggywaspushed your ds is popular! Is he doing an EPQ?

Piggywaspushed · 08/10/2021 21:16

He is but it's a shambles!

Volterra · 08/10/2021 21:21

@Shadedog, I’m sorry, that sounds rough. I get what you are saying about it builds resilience but it’s so unfair that some have multiple people to look over their PS and others get one.

No idea about history and I think you are getting a bit overlooked in offer mania on here. With time being of the essence, can I suggest you post on the current Oxbridge aspirations thread as I think someone over there may be able to help a bit more.

BlueMarigold · 08/10/2021 21:28

When you apply in UCAS should you use school email address or your personal one?

Volterra · 08/10/2021 21:34

Your personal one I think BlueMarigold.

ProggyMat · 08/10/2021 22:03

Exactly!

Seeline · 08/10/2021 22:04

DD was told to use school one, but can't see it makes much difference. Perhaps they were worried by the 'names' some might have on their Gmail accounts 😆

Alsoplayspiccolo · 08/10/2021 22:09

Wow! Offers already?
Congratulations to mini Piggy and Shimy - great start!

Hats off to you, Orange - you are amazing to be managing all that you are.

BlueMarigold · 08/10/2021 22:10

I was worried they might delete the school ones once they finish school but DD was told to use a school one. Is it possible to change it later if needed?

ProggyMat · 08/10/2021 22:37

On the notion of email addresses, do universities contact the applicant directly via the email given in their UCAS application, to acknowledge application or an offer?

Piggywaspushed · 08/10/2021 22:49

York and Cambridge have but the offer comes through UCAS.

Monkey2001 · 08/10/2021 23:05

I would use a personal email address. DS gets email on his phone and personal email is more controllable. Certainly for medicine all the communication is by direct email, they update Track later.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 08/10/2021 23:10

Thanks all...I feel like I'm supposed to be able to manage it all as there is a contracted 20% you have to spend doing it on the job. Lessons are 8 x a year.

Many, many years ago whilst working in a uni we had an application come through. The email address was something similar to "[email protected]"
Perhaps it wasn't as easy to change your email address back then Hmm

BlueMarigold · 08/10/2021 23:15

Oh my goodness @OrangeCinnamonCocktail that is hilarious! Grin

Did they get an offer?

Zebracat · 08/10/2021 23:19

Crikey. This is all very exciting. I am most excited by Oranges MBA, so lovely that you will be putting it all into something for you, for once.
Ours is still not ready for submission. Feels like most days I get asked if I’m available to look or to help, I say yes and then it doesn’t happen. I keep reminding myself that it’s her life. She wants me to read her last history work. They are told they must refer to the question in every paragraph, makes for dull, stilted writing but the teachers insist that’s how to get the marks. Am I old fashioned in longing for the days when schools werent exam factories?
