Corona Cohort: Statements Scripted, Grades Predicted

Monkey2001 · 20/09/2021 23:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

From OrangeCinnamonCocktail:

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Agghh: dd tested positive this morning. We've got (UK based) hols booked week 18th: I'm now in that impossible situation of either wanting to get covid ASAP or not at all! V annoying!

BlueMarigold · 07/10/2021 13:52

That’s rubbish @Isthisjustnormal! I hope you manage to avoid it and are still able to go on your holiday. Hope your DD isn’t affected too badly.

Monkey2001 · 07/10/2021 14:59

Oh no @Isthisjustnormal, maybe you can still change dates of holiday? If your DD recovers without passing it on, aren't you OK?

Shimy · 07/10/2021 15:08

oh no! Isthisnormal What awful timing for you. How is she holding up?

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 07/10/2021 16:47

@isthisjustnormal hope all going ok in the household.
I hope we are not.on for another Covid winter, two trains and a bus to see Mum today and she'd been moved to a war that was closed to visitors because of Covid contact. Then I see about work from home may be introduced again over the winter as necessary. Just tired of it all. I know it is all required.

Oblomov21 · 07/10/2021 17:16

Normal, what irritatingly bad timing.

ealingwestmum · 07/10/2021 17:59

It’s relentless isn’t it Orange, worse when your mum needs access not to be restricted for you to visit. Hang in there...

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 07/10/2021 18:52

Thanks @ealingwestmum. The plus side is she is in a proper dementia ward now, better for her care needs than Acute Medical The nurses seem nice.

Piggywaspushed · 07/10/2021 19:14

Blimey the instructions for sending work to Cambridge are terrifying! They might as well be written in Serbo-Croat.

Scan work, make pdfs but fill in a cover sheet (can you actually write on PdFs??) and make sure the pdf work is merged into the same PDF as the cover sheet... what??

Isthisjustnormal · 07/10/2021 19:29

I don't think the (lovely) airbnb we booked will have any alternative dates available: we booked somewhere nicer than usual as it's a landmark birthday in Nov :-( Hopefully we'll get it over with quickly and can just go down a day or so late...

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail, that sounds incredibly frustrating. Great she's in a decent dementia ward though: I did some work for Alzheimers Society in the past, and some of the skilful work done by the nurses and carers was incredible!

BlueMarigold · 07/10/2021 19:29

@Piggywaspushed what work do you have to send in? That sounds so complicated. Did your DS know how to do it?

Piggywaspushed · 07/10/2021 19:32

I haven't asked him but I very very much doubt it. Hopefully they will help him at school.

He has to send two essays. I think easiest is to print cover sheet , write on it by hand. put it with essays and then ask my receptionist helpful person to scan them for me!!

ProggyMat · 07/10/2021 19:46

@Piggywaspushed when is the deadline for written work to be submitted to Cambridge?

BlueMarigold · 07/10/2021 20:00

@Piggywaspushed good luck!

Shimy · 07/10/2021 20:28

Good luck piggy.

Piggywaspushed · 07/10/2021 20:35

proggy, it's 4th November, I believe.

Monkey2001 · 07/10/2021 21:01

@Piggywaspushed I became an expert at pulling documents together. What I do is scan them and insert each page as an image in Word. You can then play with the order. When all ready you just print the whole thing to PDF.

If you want to type on a PDF page, you can choose the setting where the image is behind the text in Word and type normally or use text boxes. That works, but there are probably more efficient ways of doing it.

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail I would have been really frustrated to have made a complex journey on public transport only to be told I couldn't visit! Hope she is reasonably content. Flowers

monkey, honestly, I understand not one word of that!
I think me just printing it and then scanning hard copies might be easiest. Not allowed Acrobat on my laptop can't do any fancy pdf stuff...

Alsoplayspiccolo · 07/10/2021 21:48

Blimey, Piggy, maybe it’s the first part of the entrance test? 🤣 We’d certainly fail at the first hurdle.

Thinking of you, Orange. What a stressful, trying situation. I’m glad your mum is being treated kindly.

ProggyMat · 07/10/2021 22:14

@Piggywaspushed

proggy, it's 4th November, I believe.
Shock that’s early! DD is having a punt at Oxford but she has to sit the CAT on 3rd November and then I believe submit two pieces of teacher assessed work by 10th November That said, she’s yet to ‘hoy her hat into the ring’ in regard to pressing the UCAS submit button but hopefully that will be done tomorrow Grin
stoneysongs · 07/10/2021 22:23

Fair winds to all the Oxbridge and medicine applications, so exciting to be setting things in motion!

AnneOfCleavage · 08/10/2021 08:04

Oh wow Piggy and Proggy good luck with the Oxbridge paperwork. I thought normal UCAS was a palaver but nothing compared with all that.

Just had the text to say my PCR was negative. Still feel a bit run down so it's just one of the many other viruses going around.

EwwSprouts · 08/10/2021 08:19

Fingers crossed for all the early applicants.

Anne that's good news. Hopefully a quick recovery will follow.

BlueMarigold · 08/10/2021 13:59

I got a reply back from Birmingham regarding the “eMSci” course. It was a typo. Good call @Monkey2001!

crazycrofter · 08/10/2021 14:07

That’s funny @BlueMarigold - other letter and you’d automatically assume a typo but not e! You can now do a BTEC in esports for example!

Good luck to all the Oxbridge entrants! It sounds like a lot of work, but if you’re an Oxbridge candidate that’s usually right up your street!

DD’s exams finished today and seemed to go quite well. She’s now back to constantly texting me about social plans!

The address of her work experience next week has now changed to a much less convenient location, a 30 min drive away and only accessible by public transport via 4 buses. Dd is not great with buses, all her experience is on trains, so I think we’ll be driving two hours a day next week!
