an ancient box of Biros stamped UCCA and everyone will be very confused

😂

FantasyAndHope · 01/09/2018 19:59

raspberry
SFE is a nightmare I’ve had my own ordeal with them.

We’re at logger heads over it
It’s hard to tell what will happen as if she goes in different halls and is then offered halls at her uni she won’t be able to take the offer up
It’s a nightmare with only 3 weeks to go

littledrummergirl · 01/09/2018 21:53

Fantasy, although Ds1 is staying in his uni accommodation he is intending to attend his sport a couple of times a week to give him a release from the intensity of his course and time with people who are outside of that bubble.

We are also waiting for updated finance information due to the course change. Hopefully this won't make much difference to the payments.
Ds1 has to make his first rent payment before the loan goes in as it is. The second rent payment is due two weeks before the loan is paid. Our experience of student finance has been that they are dreadful to deal with from the start. Hopefully they will improve as time goes on.

Ahhh it has taken me years to say UCAS instead of UCCA, and I fear I am now back at square one Grin

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 06:44

I remember when it was UCCA Grin

captainoftheshipwreck · 02/09/2018 08:18

I remember when it was university Grin

flatmouse · 02/09/2018 08:21

I remember when some were polytechnic 😁 in fact, I went to poly but graduated from university!

ShanghaiDiva · 02/09/2018 08:25

Yes, back in the 1980s it was UCCA and PCAS.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 09:05

And back in the 1970s Shanghai. Well UCCA was. I don't know what PCAS is.

Petalflowers · 02/09/2018 09:07

Have UCCA AndPCAS have you a doubite bite of the cherry, as you could hold two uni and two poly places.

Some people were annoyed when the polys got converted to unis, because the polys has gained good reputation in their fields, but no one had heard of their corresponding uni name.

Anyone else re-living their early university/poly days as they are preparing with their child? My parents didn’t drive so dm and I travelled half way across Britain with rucksacks and bags on the train. I think all we had were clothes. Blankets, sheets, mugs, kitchen stuff etc were all provided.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 09:12

Mine wasn't great. I was at Leeds Polytechnice during the Yorkshire Ripper reign of terror. It wasn't fun.

FantasyAndHope · 02/09/2018 09:22

I never went to uni so for me this is all a new experience.
We must sort accommodation by the end of next week as she leaves on the 22nd
She has an operation tomorrow so nothing can be sorted as every time I ring they email her for my permission to sort it
That’s definitely a sign things are changing and she’s going to uni

derekthe1adyhamster · 02/09/2018 09:24

It all sound so exciting! We have another year before DS disappears. He's in Greece with a mate's family and thankfully enjoying himself, although he has texted to say he doesn't want to go on the lads holiday to Kavos next week. Can't say as I blame him because it looks horrendous, but part of me is worrying that it's his girlfriend he's worried about.
Does he have to do anything about cancelling? Other than not turning up to the airport and letting the people he's meant to be going with know?

MarchingFrogs · 02/09/2018 09:55

Informing the airline / hotel? If he is sharing a. room, the hotel won't be able to re-sell the accommodation, but someone might be glad of the opportunity to book the flight?

TheThirdOfHerName · 02/09/2018 10:02

My parents lived abroad and my grandmother (who I'd been living with) was partially sighted with limited mobility, so I turned up at halls on my own with a suitcase.

The halls must have known, as my scheduled arrival time was early (with the international students) so we could get our bearings before the majority arrived with parents in tow.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 02/09/2018 12:45

I am definitely reliving my early university days as dd is going to the same university and staying in the same halls. Although the block I was in has been demolished and she is staying in the new, posher one on the same site.
I am sure I am very annoying with my constant 'in my day'.

Petalflowers · 02/09/2018 13:01

Nearly went to the same uni where my dm did her nursing qualifications. Actually glad I didn’t do as well in my exams and needed up somewhere else, as I would have had constant comparison to when she was there.

HardwickWhite · 02/09/2018 16:31

DD has just found out that her personal tutor is the lovely and super smart person she spoke to at both the open day, and offer holders day. She is delighted. I too am delighted because the tutor showed remarkable sensitivity when talking to us. I know they don't have a huge amount of contact with them, but that feels like an enormous weight off.

TheThirdOfHerName · 02/09/2018 16:52

HardwickWhite that's reassuring, and is one less thing to worry about.

Bakeandyarn · 02/09/2018 17:25

DS had a general email last week from UCAS reminding him to make sure all his contact details are up to date. This included updating your term time address with Student Finance, we haven’t done this yet as he doesn’t start until 1st October, has anyone else done this and do we need to do it now?

argumentativefeminist · 02/09/2018 17:31

Bake I'd do it as soon as you know the term time address tbh, partly so you dont forget and partly to shut SF up. In theory they shouldn't send anything there before the 1st - they know his term dates! Also 99% of student finance letters are online now, I think all I've ever been posted are "here's your confirmation" letters that are also accessible through the online account.

FantasyAndHope · 02/09/2018 19:46

derek
Possibility contact the hotel and airline company?
bake
I’d wait personally

In other news dds case has been escalated to the manager and she’s looked and there are room vacancies in another halls Hmm seems strange why they wouldn’t offer it?
I’m ringing up tomorrow and telling them it’s not good enough! She cannot be without accommodation when it was their mistake

TheThirdOfHerName · 02/09/2018 19:54

DS1 only knows partial address (which halls) and as far as I know, he won't be given his room number and building until he gets there, so SFE will just have to wait.

Nettleskeins · 02/09/2018 20:31

Ds1 has bought the Freshers' wristband for £60. And paid for some parties in advance. He is a quiet fellow, it all feels a bit odd..however, we've sworn not to interfere. Ds1 seems intent on telling us every penny he has spent so far on every new purchase to do with uni (all virtual I may add)
We still haven't got to the crockery stage, he said he didn't want to think about it for another few days. Virtual eating too then!
I mentioned the Meningitis jab. He said he also couldn't think about that either.
and it is Sixth Form Induction Day x 1 followed by another one tomorrow!!! I've been listening to Konstantin in the Seagull. (ds2's monologue induction task..."My mother is a pyschological freak" Harsh words indeed...
Does anyone recommend Geography A level? Just out of interest? was it terribly hard. dd still not decided. she is talking about Drama A level and then blew it by saying, so I won't have to write essays and I won't have to "act" will I? Just the lighting and direction then.

TheThirdOfHerName · 02/09/2018 20:41

DS1 has also bought the wristband.
