Lonicera

We live abroad and visited 11 unis nd only went to one open day!

We got wiser about how to do it - but basically I would suggest calling or emailing in advance and saying you will be visiting the campus and would it be possible to speak to someone.

Nottingham were great and even ran a mock tutorial for us - which I was encouraged to participate in!

Otherwise we found that going to the main reception always resulted in a prospectus and a suggested walking tour with a map.
We would then pop into the faculty building and ask for additional info.

Some also encouraged us to go and have a chat with admissions.

Everywhere we went the unis were vers welcoming and had an open door policy so you could just wander around.

Ds loves sport so we took to pooping into the sports center and asking is we could have a look. At some they ended up giving us a full guided tour and a chat about his favorite sport.

I asked ds who said he enjoyed our ad how visits more than the open day we attended.

Downeyhouse · 01/09/2018 09:10

For the record
We popped into the sports centre - we did not poop in it!!!!

LoniceraJaponica · 01/09/2018 09:16

That's really helpful Downey. Thank you.
If we went today DD would indeed be pooping everywhere! Grin

flatmouse · 01/09/2018 09:50

lonicera hope your DD feels better soon Thanks

LoniceraJaponica · 01/09/2018 10:05

Thank you flatmouse
The weather is going to be gorgeous this weekend and she is stuck in bed.

We went to a couple,of places on non-open days. One was during the school holidays (we were staying near there), so got a general feel of the place and the town, although we didn’t see it with students in. As a poster said above, most and welcoming, and actually you could probably wander araound many without anyone questioning you s no one checks your a student.

Petalflowers · 01/09/2018 12:50

Dc has just received a Gillette razor from UCAS!

TheThirdOfHerName · 01/09/2018 13:17

DS1 has an envelope from UCAS but he's at work so I don't know what's in it. The stuff they send is variable; I have images of some intern being told to grab items at random out of the 'freebies from marketing companies' cupboard.

So far we've managed not to poop in any sports centres (apart from DH's quick visit to the sports centre next to the park & ride in one city - but in fairness he does have Crohn's).

raspberryrippleicecream · 01/09/2018 14:38

DD had a gift gaff SIM yesterday from Ucas

Knittinganewme · 01/09/2018 14:39

DS has had nothing from UCAS but I suspect he ticked the box for "go away and never contact me again"

UrsulaPandress · 01/09/2018 14:56

DD ticked the box for no contact hence she has received no gifts

TheThirdOfHerName · 01/09/2018 17:11

DS1 got the giff-gaff SIM today and some discount vouchers.

When I was at university (in London) my parents were living abroad (in the US). My dad was an early member of Costco; when he flew over to visit me in my third year he made sure to visit a UK Costco on the way, and presented me with a box of 144 wagon wheels. I did (eventually) eat them all, but didn't touch another wagon wheel for about ten years.

PandaG · 01/09/2018 17:28

Giff gaff sim and a razor here, but still no accommodation information. He has been told early September but I am impatient to get bedding sorted! My Dad being unlikely to throw anything away has proven useful; DS is now set up with crockery, cutlery, pans, glasses, bottle opener, tea towels and towels without spending anything. The crockery is very 1970s, but at least it is unlikely anyone else will have the same, and if he breaks it there is more to match in Grandad's cupboard!

LoniceraJaponica · 01/09/2018 17:38

Check the GiffGaff coverage in the area. It is poor where we live.

FantasyAndHope · 01/09/2018 18:09

loni
Hope she feels better soon. She deserves it hugs Flowers

After exploring options there are some yipee Grin
There’s halls available for other unis that have vacancies but will accept those from other unis
A girl has offered a room but it’s tiny
Or wait for the uni to respond and I’m wondering if it’s best to play hard on the health card I feel bad but it may be the only way
Consequently since this whole stress dd has had abscesses crop up. I feel terrible but it may be the only way

LoniceraJaponica · 01/09/2018 18:12

Thank you Fantasy

Her boyfriend is checking out of the relationship which isn't helping. I wish he would put his big pants on and just tell her.

I hope your DD gets her accommodation sorted soon. You have both been through the mill recently.

UrsulaPandress · 01/09/2018 18:33

Did someone mention a letter from Student Finance. We've not had anything so I got DD to check on line and it seemed to all be in place.

TheThirdOfHerName · 01/09/2018 18:45

FantasyAndHope I think she should go for the halls. She'll make friends from her own college anyway at college. And it might also be nice to have a group of friends from another college. I have commented on Fb too.

TheThirdOfHerName · 01/09/2018 18:48

Ursula DS1 has two bits of paper from SFE. One shows the tuition fees they'll be paying the university, and the other includes the amount of maintenance they'll be paying him.

UrsulaPandress · 01/09/2018 19:16

It's so bloody stressful. Imagine if she turns up and has no finance in place.

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/09/2018 19:25

We don't have anything from student finance yet either Ursula. I'm fact, as DH is self employed he received an extra form to fill in this week. He has to send copies of his accounts by Wednesday.

DD is away so I have no idea what information she has been sent. I haven't seen her for over a week as we were away just before she left. She could have all sorts of information up in her bedroom, but I won't know till she's home (I don't know when she's coming home! She didn't tell me!)

UrsulaPandress · 01/09/2018 19:33

We had to send our tax returns from last year.

raspberryrippleicecream · 01/09/2018 19:43

Ms AD I think she may have a letter tucked up there. DD and DS1 got letters in July confirming their eligibility for their tuition fees so they had proof to show their unis. I think it also confirmed eligiility for basic maintenance loan so they had some money in September. SFE were still working out their final maintenance loan Then a couple of weeks later they got more letters with their actual maintenance loan,

DD's is now obviously wrong - wrong uni and wrong maintenance amount as she had London topup previously. She knows what the maintenance amount will be, same as DS1, but has no paperwork for uni.

She told SFE on the 16th. Obviously they have thousands to process, plus presumably insurance offers too. It would just be really nice for DD if it came through before she goes next week. Or alternatively to know what happens.

raspberryrippleicecream · 01/09/2018 19:45

However, *Fantasy^, your DD's situation is worse. Hope it gets sorted,

GnomeDePlume · 01/09/2018 19:53

TheThird at some point that intern is going to reach right to the back of the cupboard and find an ancient box of Biros stamped UCCA and everyone will be very confused!
