We all parent differently and that’s fine some people need to learn that. I didn’t stop being a mum when my daughter turned 18. She’s nearly 20 and I’ve helped her through this
In other news accommodation agreed it was fine for her to pay £200 today when I’ve been paid.
Well she’s gone to pay and they’ve cancelled it. Took ages to get through whilst she was at work. Work didn’t care either. They weren’t sympathetic.
Her room has gone and she’s now got to have a room reallocated a different one as hers has gone. I’m really angry as they said they had put a note on her file etc.

We would help friends with most (reasonable) things if they asked us, so why not our kids.

DS26 still asks our opinion sometimes, once it was how much was a reasonable amount for quarterly gas/elec, once was when he was considering leaving a job. I'm glad he still considers us worthy of having a valuable opinion!

"We would help friends with most (reasonable) things if they asked us, so why not our kids."

Exactly. We are helping each other on this forum as well.

raspberryrippleicecream · 31/08/2018 12:35

Fantasy that's awful. I hope it gets sorted.

Anyone happen to know what happens if you arrive at uni without a funding letter? I'm not so worried about her maintenance loan - just the tuition fee part. She updated Student finance as soon as she accepted her Clearing offer on results day, and I'm worried the letter won't come before next week.

MrSlant · 31/08/2018 12:57

My parents were very hands off with my education (I went to boarding school and that forced me to be independent way before I was mature enough, lifetime of anxiety problems probably stemming from that). They didn't help me with uni application, forms, how to cook/budget etc. They were even out of the country on holiday when I left to go to university for the first time, I stayed with my friend the night before I 'left home'. And I resent them for it. Big time. I might have been 18 but I still needed parents. So mine have got me behind them until they are 50, unobtrusive but right there in their corner when required. Probably when not required too but we all do our best!

Anyway, I've been busy with all the DS' and back to school/sixth form/uni planning but I had to come back in and see what you nasty nest of vipers had been saying this time to cause such a stir in FB land. My lovely nest of vipers Flowers.

Well, we were all set to cross the Pennines for an overnight and an open day tomorrow, and DD has gone down with a really nasty bout of gastroenteritis. She was so poorly yesterday that when I rang the GP for advice they wanted to see her. Fortunately the university has another open day, but it clashes with a different one that we wanted to go to.

To add toy our woes I am going to have to drive to every open day as Northern Rail are on strike every Saturday for the next 5 weeks Sad

NoHaudinMaWheest · 31/08/2018 13:22

Fantasy that is really poor. No wonder you are angry.

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 14:09

That's rubbish fantasy. I hope she finds suitable accommodation.

FantasyAndHope · 31/08/2018 14:13

Thanks all!
It’s just frustrating. As they agreed it was fine and her room would be reserved. She had started to speak to her flat mates I suppose she’ll be plonked somewhere else.

HesMyLobster · 31/08/2018 14:20

Oh no Fantasy that sounds really unfair, what a nightmare!

Lonicera hope your DD is feeling better soon, sounds nasty.
It could be worth looking into whether the university holds any subject specific mini open days at other times - my dd said the ones she went to were way more useful than the general open days. They tend to be on week days rather than weekends though.

HesMyLobster · 31/08/2018 14:21

But that means less clashing with other universities.

flatmouse · 31/08/2018 14:40

@raspberryrippleicecream I wasn't aware they had a funding letter? Thought it all done automagically between student finance and university? Worrying that DS has lost/is missing something now?

starfleet · 31/08/2018 14:45

flatmouse - DS should have received a letter from SF after he'd applied. I think it was the only thing they posted out as everything else seems to be online.

flatmouse · 31/08/2018 14:58

Will check with him thx. Only thing I remember was letter he had to sign and send back.

FantasyAndHope · 31/08/2018 14:58

Even more bad news the only accommodation left is £12,000 per year which exceeds her student loan. The uni can’t understand why her place wasn’t held as she lives so far away. Nothing can be fixed until Wednesday Sad
Dd is in bits at work

flatmouse · 31/08/2018 15:08

He's got it, all neat and tidy in a polly pocket. Wether he'd have remembered to take it is another matter 😁
He then logged on to student finance to see breakdown of maintenance loan. He basically gets 1/3 each payment. A bit daft as his 3rd semester is only 4 weeks!

flatmouse · 31/08/2018 15:09

Oh no fantasy - it's one thing after another. Sorry to hear that, I hope they pull their fingers out and sort it.

marmiteloversunite · 31/08/2018 15:30

Oh Fantasy that is awful. I really hope they sort it out for you. Your poor DD.

TheThirdOfHerName · 31/08/2018 15:36

FantasyAndHope that's really harsh, especially as they said they would postpone the deposit deadline for her.

starfleet · 31/08/2018 15:53

Fantasy that's such a rubbish situation for her to be in. I hope they manage to sort something out for her.

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 15:59

That's awful Fantasy. Where is she staying? Buckingham Palace? That amount is ridiculous.

Is it worth her taking a year out and applying early for entry next year instaed?

FantasyAndHope · 31/08/2018 16:17

Loni
I’m sure there’s a way. She doesn’t want to take a year out as she’s ready to go. She’s 20 next month and I think she just wants a fresh start. I am hoping they can sort something
Fingers crossed it can all be sorted

LoniceraJaponica · 31/08/2018 16:25

Fingers crossed for you both.

FantasyAndHope · 31/08/2018 17:11

Accommodation have rang she’s on a waiting list but they’ve advised to find somewhere else as they don’t think it will be before start of term

marmiteloversunite · 31/08/2018 17:46

Fantasy can she get on a freshers Facebook page and see if anyone else is looking for a shared house? So sorry you are going through this crap!
