Swede at Christmas

RealChristmasBaby · 12/11/2025 17:44

I'm the only one who loves swede and I want it at Christmas dinner, but not to do it on the day. Previously when I've cooked and frozen swede it's a bit watery. Any tips or advice? Could I be overcooking the swede or not draining it enough?

Great! I'm more and more convinced that this is the way forward with swedes and intend to try it at the first opportunity.

Did you flip it ?

I was so excited to read that you can microwave swede that I went out and bought one back to the office and cooked it. Luckily I have a small office to myself. Tasted nicer than boiling too - brought out the sweetness. All ready to use for tonight’s dinner now.

Disappointed it didn’t sing though.

Now wondering what else I can microwave.

Mine didn't sing either. I've just bought a bigger one to see if that will. I can see myself living on swede this winter.

Mine didn't sing for the first 20 mins or so, and when it did, I think it must have been the result of some small specific rupture. Perhaps at the bottom of the swede, so that little parps of air led to the swede lifting slightly and then falling back under its own weight. It created a cheep, cheep, cheep that was every bit as lovely as a bird.

I think there was an Abba song about an eagle, so perhaps it was trying to emulate its Swedish brethren. But its vocal range was more sparrow than eagle.

EDIT: I've just googled the lyrics. I'm SURE this is what swedes sing in the microwave:

And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings

Flying high, high
I'm a bird in the sky
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze

DH is shopping today and has been instructed to purchase the biggest, smoothest swede in the shop. I'm looking forward to the singing as much as I am to eating the swede!

DH reports acquisition of fine swede for experimenting on.
Radio behind incidentally for nice framing and a bit of size context. 😂

DO NOT PIERCE. Place on a plate and microwave, I do wonder if the swedes that aren't singing aren't being cooked long enough before checking .

What happens if you pierce?

ozarina · 19/11/2025 21:00

I've got two coming tomorrow 😂

Will not pierce. Desire to pierce will be strong, but won't give in! 🫡

I meant I think the ones that aren't singing could be because the microwaves are being stopped and checked, rather than leaving and getting to singing temp .

Today I am microwaving said and pictured swede, sitting waiting patiently in the microwave. 👀
Serving it with sausages and onions done in the airfryer, and frozen peas. Fingers crossed!

Got one for 5p in Lidl . Came home to find half of it in a hotpot…. Now need to get another to try this.

IAmKerplunk · 22/12/2025 11:42

I am so excited to try this on Christmas Day!

heathspeedwell · 22/12/2025 12:01

Going to try this tonight. It' s the most excited I have ever been about a swede (apart from Skarsgard of course).

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 22/12/2025 12:03

Yep the 25mins in the microwave method is the winner here.

but the Christmas monitor in me says not on the big day though 😂

joking - have whatever you want! X

I had a left over one the other week and roasted it with spuds. Loved it. So did DD. Never had it roasted before.
