Swede at Christmas

RealChristmasBaby · 12/11/2025 17:44

I'm the only one who loves swede and I want it at Christmas dinner, but not to do it on the day. Previously when I've cooked and frozen swede it's a bit watery. Any tips or advice? Could I be overcooking the swede or not draining it enough?

Yes you do it whole it takes a while 20-25 mins and saves all the peeling and chopping does make quite a noise hence squeaky swede ,I usually turn mine a couple of times during cooking i.e upside down

Do you have to pierce it first to stop it bursting?
I've never thought about cooking it in the microwave and I'm intrigued

FurForksSake · 15/11/2025 16:52

I think the potato ricer idea is the one I’m going to try.

Often vegetables go watery if they are chopped too small, so try that.

I never have and have never had a problem with it bursting

Microwaved swede sounds like a game changer. I often give it a hard stare in the supermarket and then walk on with a sigh because I cannot be arsed with all that chopping. So I'm definitely going to give it a try.
If it explodes though I'm suing someone for a billion dollars! Everyone seems very sure it won't! 😂

If it's 25 mins in the microwave you would be as well to chop it up and boil it. Butter, milk and black pepper.

It's not a time saving method of the cooking bit, it's time saving and a lot handier than the peeling chopping bit! Not to mind it's not waterlogged when mashed.

Never heard of adding milk to it.

Sausagescanfly · 15/11/2025 20:25

I do the microwave method, then blend with double cream, salt and pepper. You can definitely do that the day before.

Turnipnotswede · 15/11/2025 20:31

It's got to be turnip, not swede!

thecatneuterer · 15/11/2025 20:32

I've just bought a swede. I'll be microwaving it tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it. If it works well I'll be having swede every week from now on!

TakeMe2Insanity · 15/11/2025 20:33

My mum would grate in a food processor and then cook in butter and mustard seeds just delicious.

shiverjrteee · 15/11/2025 20:37

Christmas is not the same without swede! I always cook it on Christmas Eve,mash it up with pepper and reheat it on Christmas Day with lashing of butter.

wantom · 15/11/2025 20:37

I've no doubt it's gorgeous for those who love it, but to me I must have that genetic thing, as it tastes vile to me along with coriander and cucumber.

I can't even stand the smell of it cooking.

I always think of poor old Tess of the D'Urbervilles picking the turnips (similar veg) in the icy cold damp fields.

Natsku · 15/11/2025 20:40

For Swede lovers I would recommend swede casserole, always have it at Christmas. It's mashed swede, mixed with cream, egg, white pepper and nutmeg, topped with breadcrumbs and baked. Rather tasty.

Let us know how it goes. I want to be sure it's not going to explode before I try it. 😂

TheOliveFinch · 15/11/2025 22:32

@wantom I have the same with carrots, hate them but like any other veg

Cook it like a baked potato in the microwave then scoop out the middle, mix with butter and season. Perfect every time.

You have changed my life!! Stwmp naw rhiw will be easier now 😘👌

Excuse my ignorance but when you say swede is that the same as a turnip? I’m intrigued by the microwave method and would like to try it. I regularly buy turnips and cook in casseroles, mince etc. But I don’t want to risk a turnip exploding in the microwave if you’re actually talking about the little white variety as opposed to a full sized neep.

Swedes are yellow. I think neeps is the Scottish word for swede.

When I have mashed the swede I put it back on the hob, and stir well to dry it out a little

This is what I do, cook it, mash and season it, dry it out and then in the fridge - I cook it the day before as I do most of my veg - par boil the spuds and parsnips for roasting so on the day its just the green veg that needs cooking

That’s what I was thinking. So what are the much smaller whitish ones universally known as?

LadyIrony · 15/11/2025 22:53

Swede is a must for Xmas day.

One year we'd eaten dinner and then one of my sisters asked where the swede was. Mum had mashed it, then put the lid on the saucepan to hold in the heat - and forgotten to serve it.

So we had a swede course before dessert 😀

So just to be clear before I risk carnage in the kitchen tomorrow 😄
Is this the veg I can cook whole in the microwave?
