Swede at Christmas

I'm the only one who loves swede and I want it at Christmas dinner, but not to do it on the day. Previously when I've cooked and frozen swede it's a bit watery. Any tips or advice? Could I be overcooking the swede or not draining it enough?

Swede is a must for Xmas day.

One year we'd eaten dinner and then one of my sisters asked where the swede was. Mum had mashed it, then put the lid on the saucepan to hold in the heat - and forgotten to serve it.

So we had a swede course before dessert 😀

Every meal should have a swede course 😂

So just to be clear before I risk carnage in the kitchen tomorrow 😄
Is this the veg I can cook whole in the microwave?

Yes

This is a game changer! Do you think it would work with celeriac? I love it, but can’t be bothered with all those tentacles.

Another microwave fan , I had one fresh from the allotment with a lovely knob of salted butter on lastnight - just delicious

I grew a couple of swedes on our allotment last year but when I cooked one it was really bitter! Not sure what I did wrong?! I love swede and want to try again but a bit worried it could happen again!

Swedes need a couple of frosts to sweeten them.

Thank you, going to try again for next year! Would like my home grown swede for Xmas!

marylou25 · 16/11/2025 18:32

I used a fine big Irish turnip, nothing small or delicate about it so it works!

Come on! Did anyone blow up their microwave?

Nope. Just did mine. 20 minutes. It was delicious and I ate the entire thing. Also very sweet despite there not having been a frost. Game changer

Dampsquibs · 16/11/2025 18:55

Thanks for the advice everyone . I didn’t try it yet but I’m definitely going to have a go 😄

I'm pretty certain that if there's a way of turning a root vegetable or an electrical item into an improvised explosive device, DP will find it.

I think we'll stick to the far safer method of cutting it in half and putting it either in a steamer basket or use the pressure cooker function on the (expensively DP proof with automatic release) Ninja.

marylou25 · 16/11/2025 21:56

If you're afraid it will explode maybe wrap it in clingfilm, that would contain any explody bits and you won't be eating the skin anyway that is in touch with the cling.

Mine did not explode or do anything like that, potatoes sometimes have little blow outs which annoy me as they mess up the microwave but this didn't even do that, I did stab it a few times near top just in case but I don't think it made any difference, no mess anyway.

Iamalltheyhavenow · 17/11/2025 00:15

Thanks to this thread, I bought and cooked five large swede today (I like having it ready mashed in the freezer) I peeled, chopped and pressure cooked two of them and microwaved the other three. I can confirm that they don't explode ( the top and bottom has already been cut off, so it's not completely wrapped in skin like a potato would be) so no need for pricking or clingfilm. It does however ooze liquid which sets into a sticky circle on the plate on which it was standing. This easily washed off after a bit of a soak in hot soapy water. I let them cool a bit on the plate them cut them in half and scooped out the flesh. Worked great, I did mine for 25 mins, (full power 1000 W microwave) turning half way, as they were large. As a PP has said, there is no time saved wrt to the cooking, but not having to peel and chop them was a definite boon. I am converted, and a bit amazed that I have never discovered this cooking method before. Oh, and mine didn't sing, which I was a bit disappointed about...

IAmKerplunk · 17/11/2025 00:52

Well I went to Sainsbury’s today to get a swede and there weren’t any 😱

I think this thread may have caused a run on swede resulting in a national shortage 😂

Am microwaving a swede for the very first time as we speak and it is chirping like a canary. Really, I have kept pet birds for years and this is indistinguishable from their chattering.

Hasn't exploded yet, which is a plus.

Live swede! How's it going, is it done yet? 😂

BeMellowAquaSquid · 17/11/2025 18:00

I put the whole swede on a microwaveable plate and do it 12 mins then turn it upside down for another 12 mins. Saves having to peel and cut up the tricky little vegetable! I just slice the top off then scoop it all out with lashings of better a spoonful of cream and lots of black pepper. Mash it down lovely jubbly!

Kind-of done. Some overly firm bits -- after 30 mins Shock. It is quite a big swede and, like the curate's egg, good in parts.

Still better than boiling though, and the music was great.

Great! I'm more and more convinced that this is the way forward with swedes and intend to try it at the first opportunity.
