Seventies Christmas

I'm so into doing a seventies Christmas this year. Cheese and pineapple hedgehog obviously, prawn cocktails, advocaat. What would be on your seventies Christmas menu?

Many of us were scarred by the let down of the boring bell. Also the dull box shaped wrapped present picture.

Yes this always. 🙁

There's one thing that really used to say 'Christmas' and nobody's mentioned so far. You can still get them, but they are a pathetic shadow of their former selves.

Quality Street.

I stopped buying these and Roses about ten years ago. They are a chocolate abomination in my mind now. Hideous sweets.

My mum used to buy a box of chocolates every week or so in the run up to Christmas, all the usual suspects plus a box of Weekend chocolates, Newberry Fruits (for my nan), Turkish Delight in the box for my brother and a large bar of Cadbury's chocolate with whole nuts in for my dad.

Regarding Cherry B and Babycham, I was in Iceland store on Saturday with a friend and you could probably hear the gasps of delight followed by laughter as we went down memory lane as they had them in cartons of four. I can't remember the price but I did mention I had a set of six boxed Babycham glasses at home that I could serve the Babycham in if I bought a pack.

Oh, the memories ... 😆

Tinsel! Thin stringy tinsel it was all we had in the 70's , there was none of this thick gorgeous tinsel you get now .

Aussiegold · 26/10/2025 16:14

Quarter sandwiches with cress scattered over them!

No prawns though, don't remember them at all and thought they didn't take off til the 90s.....but they are delicious so depends on how strict you want to be.

Prawns were definitely a thing for highdays and holidays in the 1970s.

Marzipan fruits, babycham, those chocolate selection packs in the shape of a stocking, the foil decorations...

What is that metallic and red ribbon frill around the christmas cake called? And i loved the cake toppers, even the "Merry christmas" one that was always in the same font is so nostalgic.

It's called a cake frill.

Jojoanna · 27/10/2025 09:12

Love a seventies Christmas ! Will be ordering the cake frills

MaryGreenhill · 27/10/2025 11:18

The Christmas cake decorations were fabulous l can remember they were always robins , Santa's , reindeers , snowmen and Holly leaves ❤️

@GellerYeller
Christ, Sheffield stout! Haven’t thought about that for donkey’s years. That was the true taste of a 60s Yorkshire childhood to me. Whatever happened to Mathers black beer?!
And don’t forget dates in a wooden box with a wooden fork (none of your rubbishy plastic packaging, please), tangerines in different coloured foil wrapping, and a selection of nuts too hard to be cracked by the average human.

I think it was discontinued. Mum served it to a family friend and ended up buying them a bottle every year after as a gift.

GellerYeller · 27/10/2025 11:33

I’ve also remembered mum pulling a coffee percolator out of a cupboard annually, that was very noisy, for coffee with brown sugar cubes, and cream. Never served any other time of year!
You could get silver filigree trays the exact size of an After Eights box.
In the 80s my aunt used to serve Tico, which was considered a revolutionary sherry as it was served from the fridge, mixed with lemonade for the kids 😂

I got a load of eBay last year - mind you, they’re not cheap anymore as classed as vintage!

Staticgirl · 27/10/2025 14:44

I want a Tunis cake, the more lurid the decorations, the better. I miss Tunis cake.

Neopolitan chocolates (we used to call them Near a Politician)

We are! At least the tree will be - I've been planning on doing it for months. Just a well we still have a few old decorations as the vintage glass baubles on Ebay and elsewhere change hands for silly money.

Yes and a proper traditional fairy on top, not a star, angel or anything else

mumonthehill · 27/10/2025 15:43

Neopolitan chocolates were so good!! I had forgotten these and definitely need to bring back brandy snaps!!!

Thanks for all your posts ladies, you've made my day x

Oh, and no shop bought stockings - use a man's sock and put an apple, a satsuma, £1 (inflation), a very small toy and some sweets in there. Nothing more.

No chocolate advent calendars, only ones with a little picture behind the doors - and the pictures have to be traditional scenes like a robin in the snow.

And no 24 was double doors with the Nativity scene behind them.
