I'm so into doing a seventies Christmas this year. Cheese and pineapple hedgehog obviously, prawn cocktails, advocaat. What would be on your seventies Christmas menu?

You can still buy Foxes Brandy Snaps . My Mum loves them , we fill them with fresh cream . She does not have them very often birthday and Christmas 🤗

And no 24 was double doors with the Nativity scene behind them.

Yes! The excitement of opening it was off the scale - Christmas Eve!

Fgfgfg · 27/10/2025 17:10

Christmas wasn't Christmas without some relative buying me the red plastic slot machine with the miniature bars of Cadburys.

I desperately wanted one of these all my childhood. And l never got one

Lacy tights, a velvet dress and patent leather shoes for Christmas Day

I’d forgotten about the special outfit and shoes for Xmas day! I remember having a gold pair of sandals I wore with tights one year - I loved them so much I slept in them!

Uricon2 · 27/10/2025 18:23

I also want a proper box of Black Magic which were great, better than most expensive artisan chocs you can buy now, before they got wrecked (even the orange creams seem like a good option)

These posts are bringing so much back and it seems strange but lovely so many of us have such similar memories.

PS and a proper tin of Quality Street and teeth to cope with the toffee pennies without concern!

Lidded gift box of 100 fags on the coffee table
Eat Me dates. No one ever ate them.
No batteries for the new toys that needed them because the shops were shut for two weeks
Extra bread and milk on the window sill outside as the fridge was tiny
A dolls pram in the living room with Teeny Tiny Tears in it
A Sindy with a small wardrobe full of clothes
A poodle zippered nightdress case
Celery sticks standing in a jug on the table

Edited

Erm... what were you doing in my house at Christmas?😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/10/2025 18:47

Talking of toffee, there was a metal tray of toffee that came with a hammer to break it.

strawgoh · 27/10/2025 18:57

Catonafreezingfridge · 26/10/2025 20:48

We had the plastic mistletoe that was dragged out every year and pinned above the doorframe.

Believe it or not I still have ours, and it is still pinned up over the kitchen door frame every year😂💋

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow If it helps it was just a bit of plastic tat.

Oh how lovely! Has it got loads of pin holes in it and a few berries missing, badly stuck back on with sellotape 😄

strawgoh · 27/10/2025 19:08

I'd just been thinking of having a retro tree this year, but this brilliant thread has made me decide to go all out 70's with the food as well. As much of it as humanly possible, anyway.

@Doone22 Thank you so much for starting this thread.

It has a scabby red ribbon bow on it so we sellotape the ribbon to the door frame.

Uricon2 · 27/10/2025 20:01

The kids stockings must have some 'new' shiny coins (they will look at you in bemusement now but 2 shillings/10p could buy quite a lot of sweets then, perhaps go for £1 coins😂) chocolate money, a clementine/satsuma, nuts in shells from the bowl as well as tiny presents. You could tell that DM had run out of steam if there was a handful of Quality Street or what looked suspicious like the contents of a selection box from under the tree shoved in at the end.

She also didn't do my Nan's "a piece of coal" as we had 2 gas fires heating the whole house, dontcha know.

Oh I remember them! Well, I remember looking at them longingly in the shops - another thing we didn't get, along with a Soda Stream and a Sindy caravan. I had such a deprived childhood.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/10/2025 23:28

The toffee was by Bluebird.

We still have a toffee hammer somewhere from cleaning out DM’s house when she passsed away. You never see them anymore.

Me too. My cousin's had one but I never did Sad

Letthemeatgateau · 27/10/2025 23:41

Anyone want a read of my Blue Peter annual?

GinkoRebelFoxes · 28/10/2025 07:59

@Letthemeatgateau Is it the one with Lesley Judd, Peter Purves and John Noakes dressed as circus acrobats?

I had one where they told you how to dress up as a 'Chinaman'. That would have been the 60s though I was too old for Blue Peter by the 70s.

Yes, it was the Bluebird one we had not the luxury version pictured above. A big slab all one flavour.

Christmas wasn't Christmas without some relative buying me the red plastic slot machine with the miniature bars of Cadburys.

Lots of people talking about this chocolate machine!

I was lucky enough to win one!
It was the prize in a 'Saddest Bear' competition.

I bought him in a jumble sale for 1p; ancient, tatty with a down turned mouth.
Happy 1970s days!

My highlight each Christmas was a pair of American tan tights, which I always holed by the end of the day, and my Bunty annual!

Why were those American tan tights so coveted? Was it that smooth, polished look for legs 🦵🤣🤣🤣

We were supposed to wear them at school in the 6th form but I was a rebel and always wore dark grey, I wouldn't have got away with black.
