What kitchen gadgets do you not have that "everyone" has?

Inspired by the airfryer and Asian way of cooking rice thread, I thought I'd ask which ones you don't have and do you think you're missing out?

I have a student sized airfryer which I use a lot in place of the oven.

I don't have:
• A rice cooker - Having eaten rice everyday growing up, my diet has changed since I left home. I don't miss it and I don't think I'd use it enough to need one. Boiling the rice in a pan of water works perfectly fine for me.

•Slow cooker

• Kitchen Aid - The only time I feel I'm missing out is when recipes talk about using a certain paddle or using a dough hook, but it annoys me because it's an assumption that it's a commonly found kitchen item.

•Bread maker - We probably would use one, to avoid UPF bread, but we lack space.

Dont have a coffee machine or bread maker.

Do have a slow cooker but its in a top cupboard and not used, same with the toaster so technically we dont have those

Do have a food processor and stand mixer on the top. Certainly not a kitchen aid as Im not rich enough.

Do have an airfryer.

Do have 2 soup makers. Not used that much but extremely useful when I do.

Microwave, probably the most used thing in the house.

Do have a spice/coffee grinder, sometimes used. Rice cooker barely used. Blender, needs binning (Gino de Campo, thing nearly burnt out trying to do a smoothie).

Blender or Gino ?

dizzydizzydizzy · 09/10/2025 11:40

No oven!

AnneElliotsBestFriend · 09/10/2025 11:42

No microwave, breadmaker (although I do make bread)or air fryer. I basically have an Everhot and a Kitchenaid and I manage fine.

PinkTonic · 09/10/2025 12:50

I don’t have a bread maker or rice cooker. I have a slow cooker which I need to throw out as it’s taking up space and I never use it.

We use the air fryer, toaster, kettle and two different types of coffee machine regularly. I have a kenwood mixer not a kitchen aid, and a hand held electric whisk plus a food processor. Those are used sometimes, less regularly.

So many people without microwaves for many years. Confused

I don't know anyone without a microwave.

I don't have a dishwasher or a tumble dryer. Never needed them. OR an air fryer. OR a coffee maker.

Some posters say they don't have a breadmaker or a rice cooker. Neither do I. But this is about gadgets that 'everyone has' (meaning most people!) I would imagine most people don't have a bread maker or a rice cooker! 😆

Parallel world of Mumsnet strikes again.

See my coffee maker is in the space a microwave would go! I couldn’t live without it

abracadabra1980 · 09/10/2025 13:34

Food processor. I can’t stand ‘prepping’ things.

crosstalk · 09/10/2025 13:39

Dishwasher, microwave, airfryer, coffee machine. Do have a dehumidifier stack for making large quantities of eg dried apple, pears etc in season but thinking of using the oven - anything that's big tends not to come out of the back of the cupboard since I have a tiny kitchen.

marylou25 · 09/10/2025 13:43

For those wondering about bread makers, I have two! One is a larger size and good for mixing and baking the bread, the other is smaller and good for making dough for baking in oven. Often both are going at the same time. I have a slicer too which I use mainly for the bread and then freeze it because home made bread really only has a shelf life of a day or two.

I have a KitchenAid, processor, hand mixer, waffle maker, ice cream maker, microwavex2 (bought new integrated one and kept old one until it dies but it's still flying) again often both would be in use at same time. Old style halogen oven, no air fryer and no interest in it, two slow cookers again often both in use, different sizes. Immersion blender for soups/sauces. Pizza oven used less frequently, summer mainly. Everything I have I use regularly enough, funny enough the toaster is probably the least used!

I don't have a rice cooker or a coffee maker.

I do have two freezers as I bake and cook a lot and mainly always frm scratch and in batches so always have a good stock of food frozen. Fortunately I do have a big kitchen.

No air fryer, bread maker, stand mixer, coffee machine or microwave!
Make bread regularly by hand, likewise cakes & scones. Do have an electronic pressure cooker, we're vegetarian and it's great for pulses. A large pan and stick blender does for soup. Have a 1980s food processor still going strong, used for making hummus and chopping nuts & breadcrumbs for roasts.
Love cooking from scratch 😋

I don't have a microwave, and never have, and I don't have an air fryer, nutri bullet or quooker. I manage with an aga or oven and a hob, and a normal kitchen aid stick blender and bowl/jug attachments. They are not so common now, but when they were I didn't have a sandwich toaster either!

I do have a bread maker, but more often that not will make the dough in the kitchen aid mixer and let it prove on the aga. I have always had a decent coffee maker - for the last 15 years a beans to cup sort of thing

BellissimoGecko · 09/10/2025 14:35

A rice cooker, air fryer, bread maker. Don’t need any of them.

twilightcafe · 09/10/2025 14:39

I don't have
Boiling water tap (the one at work doesn't brew tea properly)
Rice cooker. I use a saucepan, tea towel and my knuckles.
Nespresso machine: Would take up too much space on my counter

Lulu1919 · 09/10/2025 15:06

I don't have
An air fryer
Rice cooker
Wok
Food mixer

YouForgotToTurnItOff · 08/10/2025 23:58

Not limited to the kitchen but a pre-dishwasher shaped like a labrador. Best investment to save emptying the filter.

Yuk!

Allseeingallknowing · 09/10/2025 15:33

AcquadiP · 08/10/2025 22:52

Microwave - I hate them!

Why?

YouForgotToTurnItOff · 09/10/2025 15:33

Allseeingallknowing · 09/10/2025 15:32

Yuk!

She has never said that yet. I'd ask for a refund.

Plates all go in at top temp so no worse than having Nigel Farage use the cutlery.

mondaytosunday · 09/10/2025 16:44

Yea I don’t have any of those either (nor an air fryer). I do have a boiling water tap though which I wouldn’t be without!

CrepuscularCritter · 09/10/2025 18:01

chattyness · 08/10/2025 21:40

A kitchen aid, bread maker, coffee machine, rice cooker , instant pot multi cooker thingy, juicer.

All of the above.

But I do have a chestnut 🌰 🌰 🌰 roaster.

DuchessofSuffolk · 09/10/2025 18:39

The only one I have from your list is a slow cooker!

i don’t feel like everyone has a kitchen aid, they’re quite expensive. Maybe I don’t know the right people. I would love one tho.

i would love an air fryer tho, but don’t have kitchen space. Hubby would love a coffee machine.

we also don’t have a dishwasher. Hubby and I have made a deal, in the next house, a bigger kitchen is a must and he can have a coffee machine on the provision we get a dishwasher.

soupyspoon · 09/10/2025 18:41

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 09/10/2025 11:12

Blender or Gino ?

I wouldnt ever bin Gino!

onedogatoddlerandababy · 09/10/2025 18:46

Easier to list what I do have.
kettle, cooker, fridge freezer, kitchen aid, toaster, microwave and a hand blender.

ColdWaterDipper · 09/10/2025 19:37

An air fryer. I’d like one but it would have to live on my island and I like that to be completely clear and free of clutter. I have a big and little oven though so I don’t really need an air fryer.

VeneziaJ · 09/10/2025 20:29

I have a rice cooker and use it at least 4 nights a week (I love rice 😂) I use my slow cooker loads at least once a week for casseroles or curries and I use my air fryer a lot as I do not use the big cooker any more. I do not own a kitchen aid or a bread maker and am not sure I would use them much even if I did.

VeneziaJ · 09/10/2025 20:31

I do have a coffee machine which is in daily use

JamDisaster · 09/10/2025 20:34

Genuinely think I’d give up my oven before I gave up my dishwasher.
