What kitchen gadgets do you not have that "everyone" has?

Inspired by the airfryer and Asian way of cooking rice thread, I thought I'd ask which ones you don't have and do you think you're missing out?

I have a student sized airfryer which I use a lot in place of the oven.

I don't have:
• A rice cooker - Having eaten rice everyday growing up, my diet has changed since I left home. I don't miss it and I don't think I'd use it enough to need one. Boiling the rice in a pan of water works perfectly fine for me.

•Slow cooker

• Kitchen Aid - The only time I feel I'm missing out is when recipes talk about using a certain paddle or using a dough hook, but it annoys me because it's an assumption that it's a commonly found kitchen item.

•Bread maker - We probably would use one, to avoid UPF bread, but we lack space.

I haven't got a coffee machine; we use a cafetière
No dishwasher since the last one caught fire. I haven't got a huge kitchen and prefer to use the space for the bins cupboard, to keep them tidy and out of sight.
We use a microwave rice making pot, so no electric rice cooker.
No huge mixers or processors. We do have a Nutribullet and a stick blender.
No juicer, soup maker or boiling tap.

Apart from the usual kettle, toaster, microwave, we do have an air fryer, which prompted me to give away my George Foreman grill.
We have two slow cookers and a rarely used bread maker.

Other exotica includes: a crepe maker, soda stream, blow lamp for creme brûlée, electric carving knife, tumbling potato peeler, ice cream maker and maybe more, that only see the light of day once in a while.

I don't have a microwave or a toaster. There's lots of other things I don’t have too... like a slow cooker or a food processor, but I don't think everyone has those. My impression is that microwaves and toasters are pretty ubiquitous.

I have thought about getting rid of the kettle but I keep it just in case guests want tea.

Kitchen Aid or a Bullet. I don't have a Slushie either. Or a fancy coffee machine.

TypeyMcTypeface · 09/10/2025 07:40

We don't have a dishwasher. There are only two of us so it isn't worth it.

We don't have any type of coffee-maker. We rarely drink coffee and if we do, instant is fine.

Do have - air fryer, slow cooker, soup maker, microwave, toaster, sandwich toaster, panini-grill and a remoska, all of which are used but not all of them all the time, we tend to go through phases with things like the panini-grill.

Deliveroo · 09/10/2025 07:50

I don’t have a rice cooker, food processor, slow cooker, bread maker. I don’t even know what a nutribullet is.

I have an air fryer and while it’s handy, it’s Teflon coated and I’m considering getting rid of it because of the micro plastics.

The kitchen aid is here to stay.

For the most part, I’d rather make do with multi purpose items (sharp knife, chopping board, saucepan) than store specialist gadgets. But I appreciate that for others the convenience is well worth the storage space, each to their own.

AramintaWildbloode · 09/10/2025 07:51

A dishwasher. Never wanted one.

Bbq1 · 09/10/2025 07:55

Only have a slow cooker from your list. Was "gifted" an airfryer by a friend about 3 weeks ago.

PrincessOfPreschool · 09/10/2025 07:57

I don't have:

  • airfryer
  • qooker-style tap
  • slow cooker (gave away)
  • rice cooker (gave away)
  • steamer
  • coffee machine
  • bread maker
  • soup maker

I do have a mixer, for mixing cakes and kneading bread (still need to hand knead though)

I do have a nutri bullet which is used several times per day, esp by teenagers

We recently got a dishwasher, which I love

I would like to get a bread bin

TattooStan · 09/10/2025 08:02

An electric whisk - either machine or hand held.

I've made one cake in my and DH's 20 years together, and beating the batter was like a gym workout! But I thought - my grandma managed it!

There are two of us and we fill our dishwasher around five times a week. So worth it and we could never cope with doing that amount of washing up by hand.

A kitchen aid, bread maker, coffee machine, rice cooker , instant pot multi cooker thingy, juicer.

I have a kitchen aid, otherwise none of these. Plus no air fryer. Cook lots.

Sounds like you're probably better cooks than we are! We just don't make that much washing up.

Smidge001 · 09/10/2025 08:07

I'm another without even a microwave

xsquared · 09/10/2025 08:09

LillyPJ · 09/10/2025 06:02

Don't have an air fryer or a bread maker. I make all my own bread. You don't need a machine to do it.

To be fair, you don't need most of the things I've listed but I know that some wouldn't be without their rice cooker, airfryer etc.

I have very few. Stick blender, hand held mixer, food processor with liquidiser, microwave, bean to cup coffee machine. Presumably kettle and toaster don't count.

Had a bread maker years ago, was a gift didn't replace it when it died, also had a toastie maker which I miss occasionally.

Never had a George Forman, airfryer, nutribullet, juicer, rice cooker, slowcooker, stand mixer.

ETA Forgot my electric steamer, because it was a wedding present 23 years ago, I sometimes use it at Christmas but otherwise it just takes up cupboard space!

Myblueclematis · 09/10/2025 08:33

I have an air fryer, slow cooker, microwave and my latest kitchen buy was a Ninja Smoothie Maker which I absolutely love.

I also have a Kenwood big mixer with food processor and liquidiser but it's so big I've had to put it down the garage boxed up as I don't use it any more and it takes up far too much room in the cupboard.

I use the air fryer and microwave every day almost and the slow cooker about once a week in the winter months as I'm a huge fan of stews, casseroles and anything made in one pot.

I put the pressure cooker on Freecycle about a month back as I'd stopped using it about three years ago and someone came for it so more room in the oven housing cupboard now.

Dolce Gusto coffee machine, haven't used for over a year. That will be the next to go down the garage.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 09/10/2025 08:35

We don't have:
Airfryer
Rice cooker
Slow cooker
Kitchen Aid
Bread maker
Juicer
Hand Blender
Microwave
Dishwasher
Toaster
Coffee maker
Coffee grinder
Milk frother.

We have a cooker, a washing machine, a fridge and a kettle. That's it for kitchen gadgets/electricals.
It's not about space, we have a massive kitchen. It's not about money. We just honestly don't feel we need these things.

Edited to add that we don't eat out, we home cook everything from scratch. We're just old fashioned I suppose.

Myblueclematis · 09/10/2025 08:36

I don't have a dishwasher, rice cooker, breadmaker. I don't need any of those at all.

Netcam · 09/10/2025 08:39

Like you, we don't have rice cooker, kitchen aid or bread maker. I have previously had a bread maker, a large food processor, a coffee grinder, a large juicer, a slow cooker and they all took up so much worktop space or sat in the back of a cupboard that made them impossible to access.

We now have a kettle, toaster, small electric moka pot and induction milk frother, as well as a small combi microwave/ove/grill that gets used a lot for various purposes. We are currently renovating our kitchen and have no oven or hob, so are also using a 2 ring plug in Induction hob.

We also have an instant pot, ice cream maker and stick blender that we have kept which get occasional use, but might be used more if we can find a more accessible place to store them in the redesigned kitchen.

We are trying to get rid of anything in the kitchen we never use and streamline it.

Softcitrusfruit · 09/10/2025 08:40

None.

No microwave.
No coffee machine.
No airfrier.

Hate the clutter.

Most of them

The planet doesn't need more landfill.

It’s not landfill if they’re being used.

...and when they reach end of life? What then?

SilkAndSparklesForParties · 09/10/2025 08:59

I have:
A microwave
A quorker tap
An elective tric hand mixer
A liquidiser
A hand held blitzed
A flamer for caramelising

Garamousalata · 09/10/2025 09:06
