What kitchen gadgets do you not have that "everyone" has?

Inspired by the airfryer and Asian way of cooking rice thread, I thought I'd ask which ones you don't have and do you think you're missing out?

I have a student sized airfryer which I use a lot in place of the oven.

I don't have:
A rice cooker - Having eaten rice everyday growing up, my diet has changed since I left home. I don't miss it and I don't think I'd use it enough to need one. Boiling the rice in a pan of water works perfectly fine for me.

Slow cooker

Kitchen Aid - The only time I feel I'm missing out is when recipes talk about using a certain paddle or using a dough hook, but it annoys me because it's an assumption that it's a commonly found kitchen item.

Bread maker - We probably would use one, to avoid UPF bread, but we lack space.

Ah, but a rice cooker is so much more than just used for boiling rice. Today's rice cookers come with multiple settings that can create a one pot meal at a push of a button while you go and do something else instead of standing there to stir. It can even be set overnight so you can wake up to a hot meal.

I never, ever, ever drain rice. It's not pasta!

That’s where people go wrong though, it ends up like glue.
I have a Ninja that have 15 functions so definitely don’t need a rice cooker

Tell that to the Japanese 😆 each time I’m there and in short term rented house there is a tiny dishwasher , larger hob , small grill , microwave and a rice 🍚 cooker ( no oven )
I found it so useful I got my own when I got home .
You can have some rice on the go all day as necessary and everyone helps themselves and adds curries , stews or even some veg and an egg if you have a busy household.
Mine does also double up as a slow cooker

On the go all day, how many people are passing through?
I have 2 kids under 5 that definitely can’t helpselves so it’s a no from me I’m afraid

I don’t have a dishwasher, bread maker, coffee maker, rice cooker, juicer, food processor, air fryer or slow cooker. I do have a microwave! Still manage to cook from scratch and eat well.

I don’t have an air fryer, slow cooker, coffee machine or rice cooker.

I do have a microwave, a bread maker, a decent blender, a food processor I never use and a coffee grinder.

I don’t have a dishwasher (or a tumble drier). I have very few gadgets . A 60s Kenwood Chef that I inherited , a hand held electric whisk, an electric coffee grinder. Think that’s it actually. I’ve just ordered a stick blender though as I have a few recipes that need one.

And that is where you are wrong. U have never needed to drain rice and has never ended up like glue. Not sure what rice you are using that requires draining, but I'm Asian, I don't use a rice cooker but my boiled rice always ends up fluffy and just right for pairing with things like curries, vege chilli etc.

The only electronic things (apart from a cooker, fridge and freezer) I have in the kitchen are a kettle, toaster, microwave and tiny smoothie maker that makes enough for one person. I’m thinking of getting an air fryer and a hand blender, just where to put them as kitchen is really small!!

If there’s excess water, I’m draining it simple.

We clearly use different methods of cooking rice.

I don't have an air fryer or a slow cooker or anything by Kitchen Aid.
I do have a hob, oven, microwave, dishwasher, 2 pressure cookers, a Braun food processor and a couple of stick blenders.

MsRinky · 14/10/2025 13:32

I don't have an electric kettle, juicer, breadmaker or a soup maker whatever that is.

But I have (and use) my rice cooker, ice-cream maker, deep fat fryer, blender, food processor, multi pressure/slow cooker that does sous-vide, coffee machine, milk frother, stick blender., air-fryer, stand mixer (plus pasta attachments!)...I cook a lot. Just as well I also have a dishwasher.
