What kitchen gadgets do you not have that "everyone" has?

Inspired by the airfryer and Asian way of cooking rice thread, I thought I'd ask which ones you don't have and do you think you're missing out?

I have a student sized airfryer which I use a lot in place of the oven.

I don't have:
A rice cooker - Having eaten rice everyday growing up, my diet has changed since I left home. I don't miss it and I don't think I'd use it enough to need one. Boiling the rice in a pan of water works perfectly fine for me.

Slow cooker

Kitchen Aid - The only time I feel I'm missing out is when recipes talk about using a certain paddle or using a dough hook, but it annoys me because it's an assumption that it's a commonly found kitchen item.

Bread maker - We probably would use one, to avoid UPF bread, but we lack space.

Dishwasher and microwave. Mixer taps.

Blackmetallic · 09/10/2025 20:42

We have a bread maker, it's probably the most-used gadget in the kitchen.
We don't have a rice cooker, kitchen aid, slow cooker or air fryer.

newrubylane · 09/10/2025 21:01

None of the ones you listed.

I have microwave, kettle, toaster and a small handheld mixer.

Edit to add: a dishwasher is an essential for me.

localnotail · 09/10/2025 21:24

Of all kitchen gadgets (excluding oven/ hob), I only have a kettle and a toaster. I dont even have a microwave. Why? I literally feel like I don't need anything else. I cook a lot but guess I'm old school! Its either oven or a hob ))

I only got a toaster because my DC wanted it and it was free ))

CthulusMum · 09/10/2025 22:18

We don’t have a dishwasher

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 09/10/2025 23:18

I don’t have an air fryer, but I do have a slow cooker that I use a lot.

keffie12 · 09/10/2025 23:35

We don't have a microwave. Pointless item we rarely used. If we need something heating up we use a saucepan.

If something says it has to be done in a microwave then I double bowl it in a saucepan on the stove.

Defrosting? Stick it in a big bowl of cold water. No need for a microwave.

I have rice kettle, k mix, icecream maker, slow pot, plus much more, and they are all used. We do have a double air fryer too.

Never needed or seen the point in microwaves

Bjorkdidit · 10/10/2025 02:01

You're either more organised or have more time than people who value microwaves @keffie12

In the last day I've used ours for heating up numerous cups of tea because I like lots of tea so make a pot then reheat it as needed.

Cooked some rice in the microwave rice steamer, admittedly not much faster but can be just left alone rather than needing to watch it on the hob.

Defrost frozen prepared garlic for a recipe. Also defrost a chunk of baguette so I could cut it up for the toaster because I CBA before freezing.

Heat up leftovers for lunch while WFH, again can be left unattended while also doing bits of work instead of having to watch the hob.

ZenZazie · 10/10/2025 02:14

An air fryer. I had one for a while but didn’t like how it dried food out so I gave it away

Our microwave us used bout 5 times a day as a minimum! Probably because I'm really disorganised. But use it to defrosted frozen berries for breakfast, heat up lunches (for school pack lunch flasks), then my lunch, usually to reheat a coffee or two during the day, then one-off the older kids will use it to heat up leftovers and then to defrost peas/broad beans for tea. Then inevitably 2 people will be out at work/playing sports and will eat later so used then. Only 5 of us in the house but out timetables are a bit mental.

I know, we use our microwave a lot for all that sort of stuff. Plus softening butter a bit when it comes out of the fridge, warming plates etc. my MIL doesn’t have a microwave and seems to assume that people only have them if they eat ready meals. I was cooking a roast for her once and used ours several times in the process almost just to show her it’s not just for ready meals! (Warming milk ahead of making a white sauce; cooking peas; heating plates etc).

Have quite a few kitchen gadgets but use most of these regular

rice cooker
thermomix
stand mixer, with blender attachments etc
air fryer
nutribullet
panini grill
pasta maker
electric citrus press

Plus the usual, ie toaster, kettle etc. These, and the thermomix are always on the counter, the rest are in easy accessible cupboards.

Used to have a bread maker but didn’t like the hole the paddle leaves behind, so now make dough in thermomix or stand mixer and bake in oven.

Can use both rice cooker and thermomix as a steamer, although also have a metallic steam basket to use with a pan on a stove.

And a silly small gadget, which admittedly I only use about once a year - but so useful when I do - is a cherry pitter!

Wincher · 10/10/2025 08:30

I don’t have an air fryer. I quite fancy one but we’re short of kitchen space. At the moment we are cooking for a family so using the oven makes sense - I can imagine when kids leave home an air fryer would make sense for small quantities. Then again as the kids get older maybe it would be handy for them to cook some freezer food fast!

we do have a ninja blender/soup maker which gets used loads for smoothies/soup etc. I could manage without it but I love it!

cinquanta · 10/10/2025 08:36

We don’t have an air fryer or rice cooker.

We do have a bread maker but it hasn’t been used for 15 years. I don’t like the shape of the loaves.

We do have a Kitchen Aid, except that it is a microwave combi-oven and doesn’t have paddles. It gets used most for reheating cups of tea/coffee, defrosting, steaming, occasionally baking or doing oven chips. After the electric kettle and toaster it’s probably the most useful gadget in the kitchen.

We also have a slow cooker that gets used frequently in the colder months.

Cojones · 10/10/2025 09:32

Though we love a kitchen gadget I don’t want and don’t have the space for an air fryer, bread maker or slow-cooker.

DP treated himself to a rice cooker and uses it a lot. When the kids were small we tried living without a microwave when ours broke but in the end we caved. My Kenwood mixer did get a lot of use but I don’t bake as much these days.

I do have an ice-cream machine and waffle maker which get very intermittent use. Whereas DPs toastie maker is often used. We do have an electric deep fat fryer which does get used by DP and DS, I’d get rid but they love it.

Daftypants · 10/10/2025 09:46

You mean extra things over and above a kettle , toaster , microwave?
I have a small slim bean to cup coffee machine and a small electric milk frother jug and wouldn’t be without them .
We also eat a lot of rice and I like my rice cooker .
I got a kitchenaid food processor many years ago when we were a larger family who often had extra people over for meals but I don’t use it enough now so might give that away .
i don’t have an air fryer can’t be bothered 😆 I use my oven or an actual frying pan

Donsyb · 10/10/2025 11:01

I think I’m the only person I know who doesn’t have an air fryer! Also don’t have a bread maker or juicer.

Think we have most other things (kitchen aid etc) and we also have a (very expensive in my mind) Thermomix. We also have an ice cream maker.

Wigtopia · 10/10/2025 11:13

I don’t have a stand blender/juicer/food processor, toaster, air fryer, slow cooker, rice cooker, pod coffee machine/bean to cup coffee machine, bread maker, soup maker, toasted sandwich press, waffle maker, ice cream maker

do have a kettle, microwave (after8years of not having one) and kitchen aid.

i keep daydreaming about getting a waffle maker and sandwich press but i can see that being a slippery slope to eating well 😄😄😄

Extremely organised! I'm high functioning on the Autism spectrum though I shouldn't use high functioning now, I know. Organisation is one of the biggies and is a massive part of my spectrum for me. I have other labour, time saving devices. I just don't do microwaves.

FlipFlopVibe · 10/10/2025 15:17

Rice cooker, why on earth does anyone need help cooking rice. Just cover with water (don’t even measure), simmer for about 5-6 minutes, stir occasionally, when you can’t feel it against the spoon it will be done. Pour into sieve to drain.
Can’t imagine a whole cooking appliance for that one thing. Or a whole appliance for making one thing at all to be honest, same goes for waffle makers, toastie maker, yoghurt maker etc. take up far too much space.

JayJayj · 10/10/2025 16:09

A microwave.
Although I do want to buy one as I’ve started treat making and it’s easier for melting large quantities of chocolate.

Boutonnière · 10/10/2025 16:21

I don’t have any of those things. I have a Magimix food processor that is used for grating or for rubbing in fat to flour. Also an electric coffee grinder to complement my stovetop coffee machine; my husband has an expensive, huge Sage espresso machine than grinds, brews and fluffs the milk, spends ages tampering about with pressures etc and admits my ancient Moka makes better coffee !

NotMeNoNo · 10/10/2025 17:03

I guess we're a bit gadgety

Regular use:
Toaster
Microwave
Kettle
George Foreman type grill
Bread maker
Smoothie blender
Stick blender
Aeropress coffee maker

Occasionally use (gathering dust)
Pressure cooker
Slow cooker
Magimix
Kenwood chef

They are all cheap or old though.

Ah, but a rice cooker is so much more than just used for boiling rice. Today's rice cookers come with multiple settings that can create a one pot meal at a push of a button while you go and do something else instead of standing there to stir. It can even be set overnight so you can wake up to a hot meal.

I never, ever, ever drain rice. It's not pasta!

Edited

I dont eat rice at home because I have no idea how to cook it! Even though I like rice. When I cook it its either burned or dry - no matter how many times I was told how to do it.

Rice cooker is the only gadget I ever considered getting.

Tell that to the Japanese 😆 each time I’m there and in short term rented house there is a tiny dishwasher , larger hob , small grill , microwave and a rice 🍚 cooker ( no oven )
I found it so useful I got my own when I got home .
You can have some rice on the go all day as necessary and everyone helps themselves and adds curries , stews or even some veg and an egg if you have a busy household.
Mine does also double up as a slow cooker
