i'm cooking paella for DPs special birthday treat tonight. i thought i'd cheat and buy 18p food colouring instead of 2.80 saffron. i put some yellow in and it has gone bright, bright orange.

and i mean like a traffic light.

what can i do?

i've been making out im a better cook than i really am and he's been going on about how he's looking forward to my authentic paella.

OMG...pmsl

MrsCarrot · 21/05/2008 21:49

it turned his tooth yellow?

Are you sure there's not a bit of yellow veg stuck on it?

mankymummy · 22/05/2008 09:15

it tasted ok. but it has turned the temporary filling on one of his front teeth yellow.

didnt tell him last night but heard a sharp intake of breath and a "jesus" from the bathroom this morning.

i've been lying low !

looked at the leftovers this morning and i swear they are even more yellow than last night.

TBH I'd use the food colouring again (and not just for the laugh factor!) but this time I'd just put in a few drops rather than the whole bottle !!!!

Roll over Delia !!!!

You used a whole bottle?!

Good god woman have you never used food colouring before?

morningpaper · 22/05/2008 11:31

SURELY this is a joke thread?????????

CUT PRICE SEA FOOD?
REHEATED RICE?
A BOTTLE OF YELLOW COLOURING?

What next, Cheestrings?

MrsCarrot · 22/05/2008 12:37

up until the tooth and the whole bottle of colouring I didn't think it was a joke but now...

you wouldn't have been able to eat it with a whole bottle of colouring, surely, it would have been vile and dyed your whole mouth not just a tooth

maggiethecat · 22/05/2008 13:24

Manky, you've had me in stitches over lunch!!! Are you a comedy script writer in real life?!!

mankymummy · 22/05/2008 16:19

i'm totally serious honest. i did use a whole bottle, they're only little. it was odd tasting but not too bad, i did make a lot - probably enough for six people, maybe that diluted it a bit !!!!

he said the colour is wearing off a bit luckily. and its only a temporary filling anyway !

no OMDB never used it before, i never bake as thats a disaster too....

MrsCarrot · 22/05/2008 19:18

ROFL at it only being a little bottle

morningpaper · 22/05/2008 19:24

yes is there none left?

none in the food bin?

come on we want to laugh at you

It must have tasted AWFUL

sexandthetown · 22/05/2008 19:48

mankymummy-loving this thread.
What are you trying next?

My DH;s SIl is spanish and when we stay at MIL's and everyone is over she makes a paella.

Her and BIL even go out and shoot a rabbit and come back and skin and cook it for the paella.

I can never quite manage to eat any as hours before I have seen the bunny running around MIL's garden.

mankymummy · 22/05/2008 20:11

morningpaper... no i packed the remainder up and gave it to DP for his lunch. i suspect he lobbed it on his way into work though !

do you know what... actually it wasnt THAT bad. really...!

um... dont know what i'll try next...

i do really love cooking. i remember having a gorgeous fish soup in Spain once. would really like to try that...

Def. nothing that needs any colouring. Rice pudding maybe?

i could take a photo of the tooth, providing it hasnt worn off next time i see DP (thats assuming i WILL see him again of course!)

Great. Reheated rice for dinner and then the same cold the next day for lunch. I hope he did chuck it on the way!

PortAndLemon · 22/05/2008 20:19

Surely you can't have used a whole bottle? I was with you up to that point, but that must be a wind-up...?

mankymummy · 22/05/2008 20:25

really. a whole bottle. but its asda brand so maybe its weaker than proper stuff? and like i said those bottles are really small.

how much would you use in cooking then? i dont actually know what you'd use it for... icing?

promise.. not winding up. i feel very silly now !

i did start with a few drops but it made no difference whatsoever to the colour...

OP posts:
cocolepew · 22/05/2008 20:37

Mr Manky. You'd hardly notice. Honest.

morningpaper · 22/05/2008 21:10

well you just wouldn't really USE it for paella...

a few drops for ermmm playdough?

mankymummy · 22/05/2008 21:46

coco... psmsl - not THAT bad (i dont think).

Morningpaper... seriously? a few DROPS?! i think i was done over on the quality of the food colouring. a few drops did nothing at all... maybe im slightly colour blind?!

makingyourmindup · 23/05/2008 00:18

mankymummy-you could always try making a risotto next time with squid ink

missblythe · 23/05/2008 08:24

mankymummy · 23/05/2008 09:51
