Sunday dinner that isn't a roast

madaffodil · 20/03/2025 21:48

I need some inspiration! We usually have a roast of one sort or another, or sometimes branch out int chicken portions, chops, a casserole or a steak pie, but I am fresh out of ideas...

Does anyone have any suggestions please? For 3 adults & we eat most things.

Chicken and leek pie?

photolimbo · 20/03/2025 21:50

This is one of my favourite recipes with the best rice you will ever eat. Like a roast without the faff:

I did a loaf tin chicken shawarma/ gyros with a big salad, coleslaw, egg fried rice, thin flatbreads and sweet potato wedges. Mint yogurt dressing. People mixed and matched.

Dead easy and was a huge hit.

  • Toad in the hole or sausage plait with roast potatoes, veg and gravy.
  • Chicken, bacon and leek pie with mash and veg.
  • Stew of some sort with dumplings and crusty bread.

🤤

I’ve just saved this to my recipe app. Looks lovely!

AdoraBell · 20/03/2025 22:06

That Waitrose recipe looks delicious 😋

I was going to suggest some kind of pie, chicken and leek/mushroom or steak and mushroom would be my choice.

AnnaBalfour · 20/03/2025 22:13

In spring, a pot of beautiful chicken and vegetable soup with leeks, carrots, cauliflower, green beans - any veg you like and pearl barley or herb dumplings.

Or lamb chops with oven toasted Mediterranean vegetables

Asalmonswimmingupstream · 20/03/2025 22:16

I love marry me chicken with steamed rice for a change to roast dinner, even the kids eat it!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/03/2025 22:18

Moussaka - I always use Delia Smith's original 1970s recipe from my much-thumbed copy of The Complete Cookery Course, but sometimes I add courgettes and/or potatoes as well as aubergines. I won't link the one currently on her site because she's changed the topping from a thick egg-enriched bechamel sauce with lots of cheese in it to one involving ricotta. The link here takes you to something more like the original. https://wtfdoieattonight.com/2012/03/21/delias-moussaka-no-no-dont-go-you-want-this-recipe-honest/

Nigella's turkey meatballs are light and succulent, as well as being lower in fat. Make a batch – half for tea and half to be frozen for future outings.

Fagli · 20/03/2025 22:20

Paella, it’s a classic Sunday dinner in our house, especially in summer when we do it on the bbq.

AnnaBalfour · 20/03/2025 22:20

Or a beef bourguignon/short rib of beef casserole with mashed potatoes

Seafood risotto/paella

AdaColeman · 20/03/2025 22:22

Navarin of lamb, a delicious Spring time meal full of fresh flavours.

Cassoulet, lovely if the weather turns a bit chilly again.

Beef Bourguignon, serve with Yorkshire puddings and mash.

Fish soup, get a selection of three or four types of fish and shellfish.

Moules-frites, ideal for a slow Sunday lunch with wine and gossip!

Is that not a roast?

It is the way I do it, and we have that quite often anyway. Simmer the gammon the day before in water & whatever fruit juice we happen to have in, then strain and leave to go cold. The next day, douse with mango chutney or honey & wholegrain mustard and stick in a nice warm oven for 45 minutes or so.
