Sunday dinner that isn't a roast

madaffodil · 20/03/2025 21:48

I need some inspiration! We usually have a roast of one sort or another, or sometimes branch out int chicken portions, chops, a casserole or a steak pie, but I am fresh out of ideas...

Does anyone have any suggestions please? For 3 adults & we eat most things.

Is that not a roast?

Gammon steaks, sorry, should have added that!

KnickerFolder · 21/03/2025 12:36

What makes Sunday dinner different from any other day (in your mind)?

Is it something more luxurious? Or about taking more time to sit together and eat?

We like things like tapas, mezze, raclette/fondue as an alternative to a roast.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 21/03/2025 12:38

Salmon en croute.

MarkWithaC · 21/03/2025 14:16

I like roast chicken (whole or pieces) with a quinoa salad (warm or cold) with some combination of nuts and seeds, pomegranate seeds, fresh herbs, lime juice and spices. Usually do a simple green veg too, and serve with Greek yoghurt, harissa and flatbreads.
You could roast a whole fish instead of the chicken for a change.

This is an easy meal to prepare and taste delicious, because it already has new potato in the dish - just add green vegetables.

Its certainly not turned out like soup when ive made it, it freezes easily and its even good reheated the next day. Chicken thighs are really cheap and best flesh amount then any other cut

We've decided to go with lasagne + garlic bread and salad this time (next week will probably be toad in the hole), and thank you all so much for all the fantastic ideas and suggestions, and I will definitely be returning to read this thread again and again.🙂

@KnickerFolder What makes Sunday different? Well it's a day when we have family round, and having a slap-up dinner is traditional in our house, but sometimes I just fancy something we wouldn't normally go for on a Sunday. So I thought I'd start a thread about it to see what other people suggest.

Nigella’s slow-roasted lamb (shoulder or leg) served as build-your-own wraps, with harissa or minted yoghurt, pomegranate seeds, olives, zaatar, salad leaves and cucumber (obviously alter the dips and salads to your taste). Or have the lamb as a roast and this is tea the next day.

Hoppinggreen · 21/03/2025 14:50

We have a lot of traybakes
DH is a veggie (but not worried about cross contamination), DS only eats meat and I am happy either way.
I do meat up one end, extra veggies or Tofu up the other and I eat from the middle

Ottolenghi Marebell chicken with couscous

Rick Steins duck shepherds pie.

We have an all day breakfast for Sunday lunch these days. Mini roast potatoes, sausages, scrambled egg, beans and toast.

KnickerFolder · 21/03/2025 15:25

I think that may have come across wrong, @madaffodil! I was asking so we could understand what makes Sunday dinner special/different for you so we can make appropriate suggestions.

As you can see, at least one poster was horrified by the idea of tacos or salad on a Sunday 😂

My Maltese uncle used to insist the only real Sunday dinner was Imqarrun il-Forn

We've had Chinese style pork belly and stir fried veg the last couple of weeks. Really lovely.

dogcatkitten · 21/03/2025 15:48

If you are looking for something a bit different for a Sunday: steak with all the trimmings, fish pie, prawns (or prawns and fish) in homemade pasta sauce with favourite pasta, roast Guinea fowl, barbecue style pork spare ribs.

I did a loaf tin chicken shawarma/ gyros with a big salad, coleslaw, egg fried rice, thin flatbreads and sweet potato wedges. Mint yogurt dressing. People mixed and matched.

Dead easy and was a huge hit.

Edited

This sounds so good

I sometimes do salmon fillets cooked in parchment in the oven with new potatoes and seasonal green veg. M&S do a lovely lemon and dill sauce that goes perfectly with it.

Hi, that's okay xx We usually have a roast dinner on Sundays, but not for any reason to make it special or different, it's just something we've always done. The rest of the week we make a lot less effort.

We often have half a side of salmon.

mindutopia · 21/03/2025 19:16

We do summer roasts, which are basically roasted or BBQ meats/ protein with salads.

So Easter is almost always roast or smoked spicy lamb shoulder or leg with things like watermelon, mint and feta salad, chickpea salad, a basic green salad with vinaigrette plus hummus, olives, flatbread.

Or I’ll do an American BBQ theme, a rack of ribs either smoked or roasted with a dry rub, macaroni salad, tomato salad, green salad, add in some grilled pineapple on the side or a fruit salad for pudding.

Allihavetodoisdream · 21/03/2025 19:54

No to a full roast in spring/summer anyway!

I might still roast a chicken, but will serve it with a potato salad in a mustard dressing with capers, green veg, etc. Or instead of meat I’d do a big homemade quiche with asparagus and goat cheese or caramelised onions, tomatoes etc. I think what makes it feel special is a special central component and then seasonal veg to go with.

In spring we often have lamb (done however as long as it’s pink) on top of a salad with sheep’s cheese, radishes, pomegranate seeds etc.

I make a lot of traybakes as well. Basically any veg we have roasted in herbs and spices with chicken thighs, cheese etc served with green salad.

Smittenkitchen · 21/03/2025 21:07

Lasagne from scratch including homemade pasta

lifeonmars100 · 21/03/2025 22:49

TheHerboriste · 21/03/2025 02:28

Lasagne

I often do this on a Sunday, I serve it with garlic bread and a massive salad, Lemon sorbet and raspberries for pudding

Disneydatknee88 · 21/03/2025 23:13

I tend to batch cook on a Sunday so actual Sunday dinner is one of Convenience. We like a sausage, chips and beans. Or jacket potato cheese and beans. We sometimes cheat a Sunday dinner and buy a maggi bag for chicken, frozen roast potatoes and veg. Shepherds pie is also a good shout for a Sunday.
