Sunday dinner that isn't a roast

I need some inspiration! We usually have a roast of one sort or another, or sometimes branch out int chicken portions, chops, a casserole or a steak pie, but I am fresh out of ideas...

Does anyone have any suggestions please? For 3 adults & we eat most things.

Toad in the hole! Lots of veggies on the side. I use bbc recipe for sams toad in the hole. It's lovely, less effort than a roast but still has a Sunday feel.

These are all in our Sunday rotation:

Bangers and mash
Cottage pie
Shepherds pie
Fish pie
Bourginion
Lamb hotpot
Beef stew
Chicken salad (on a warm day)

My go to Sunday dinner is always roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and bearnaise sauce. This week we have a guest who doesn't eat red meat so I'm cooking a side of salmon instead. We still have roast potatoes and bearnaise but will skip the Yorkshire pudding. I'm missing it already.

Beef Wellington

Dauphinoise potatoes

Asparagus, Long-stem Broccoli

or

Lamb Wellington

Rosemary Parmentier potatoes

Peas, roasted carrots and parsnips

Both served with a meat or red wine jus

The Sunday roast has always felt like a special meal for my family. But, yes, having it week in week out does take the shine off. We alternate with some of our fancier favourites.

Paella. steamed vegetables as sides
Chicken roast with garlic cloves, lemon and chorizo and an interesting salad.
Beef wellington dauphinois potatoes and veg
shell fish selection and salad
whole sea bream with Asian aromatics rice and steamed green vegetables
Anything else that’s a faff during the week

Loads of amazing sounding ideas on this thread!

this time of year I love baked salmon with herby new potatoes and green beans/broccoli/kale. Sometimes with crispy potatoes and roasted veg.

This Sunday we are having chicken spatchcocked with rosemary mascarpone (river cafe recipe), new potatoes and salad. Also planning slow roast Moroccan leg of lamb for next week with couscous.

I like this too, and you can get quite a large piece of salmon fillet ( not a whole fillet) which is nice to cook then slice at the table rather than individual fillets. This helps to stop it drying out when cooking.

Also baby potatoes olive oil roasted in their skins are quite nice with it!

Starlight1984 · 21/03/2025 08:55

Some of these have already been said but anyway, some of our alternatives to Sunday roast 😊

Gammon (soaked in Coca Cola for 24 hrs beforehand), egg, chips, pineapple and peas
Cottage / Shepherds pie
Lamb / Barnsley chops with mash / new potatoes and veg
Steak and ale or chicken and leek pie
Toad in the hole

Starlight1984 · 21/03/2025 08:58

Also, is it just me or are some of these suggestions absolutely wild?! I absolutely cannot comprehend having tacos or a salad on a Sunday 😂 Tacos and curries are Friday / Saturday night meals and salads and soups are strictly for weekday evenings only (also see jacket potatoes, fajitas and omelettes 😄)

Salmon & lemon pasta / we love it

Anything that takes too long to prep/cook on a weekday 😁

Butter chicken, naan bread and bhaji
Pulled pork with nachos, bread rolls, or potato wedges and coleslaw
Casserole/pot roast
Beef or chicken pho
Barbecue

Can't stand a roast 😖
Mondays are our days for meat & veg meals and we generally have:

Beef and dumplings
Sausage and (baked) bean casserole
Shepherd's pie
Gammon, chips and veg
