How many portions is this for your family?

Carlessly · 14/09/2023 10:37

315g mince
1x 400g tin tomatoes
1 courgette
1 large pepper
2x garlic cloves

I think my portion sizes are awry and am trying to cut down on the pasta to 80g per person without starving my 13 year old! I'm sure we all are far too much pasta vs sauce.

I'd say 3 people. I cook 500g when making a spag Bol and that feeds 2 adults and 1 teen. There's also enough for 2 more teen portions later in the week.

Ihateslugs · 14/09/2023 10:49

I use a small 250g pack of mince to make Spaghetti Bol, adding extra veg like you do such as mushrooms and onions. This is enough for two very generous portions. So I would expect 350g meat to feed 4 adults - I always add garlic bread if I have visitors so I might even serve 5 portions.

If you order Spaghetti Bol in a restaurant, the amount of meat sauce is always smaller than I serve at home, there tends to be a lot of pasta.

Real life or Mumsnet portions?

Yes-like rice or bread in Asian cuisine. Brits tend to think of the sauce as the meal. Other cultures think of it as flavouring.

BlueBlubbaWhale · 14/09/2023 10:53

I'd say 3 too. If I use 500g I split that four ways or 250g for two of us.

Doggymummar · 14/09/2023 10:56

I would say 2 portions maybe small leftovers

AlltheFs · 14/09/2023 10:58

It would do 2 adults and 1 child I think. Might be a bit leftover. We usually do 500g and that gets us 3 adult and 2 child portions roughly.

3-4 portions here.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/09/2023 10:58

3-5 portions. But we use more vegetables than that in a sauce... onions, carrots, maybe peas, mushrooms... No way authentic!!

Steakandquinoa · 14/09/2023 10:59
  1. But I’d add some oats or lentils or more veg

Only enough for 2 really

HorseyHorsham · 14/09/2023 11:01

3 portions here. 500g pack feeds four plus 1 generous/2 mean portions of leftovers

fearfuloffluff · 14/09/2023 11:01

I'd add an onion to that!

It would do us for one meal (2 adults, two kids)

I sometimes make that kind of sauce with quite a lot of liquid, then serve up with a slotted spoon, you're left with a fair bit of flavoursome sauce you can use as a soup base, cook noodles in etc which ekes it out a bit

derrydee · 14/09/2023 11:02

2 adults, 2 children here!

Tisfortired · 14/09/2023 11:02

With double the amount of veg it’d do 4 portions here, as it is probably 3 with small leftovers.

LizzieSiddal · 14/09/2023 11:03

2 adults and one child. If I were feeding a teenager I’d say 2 portions.

Janieforever · 14/09/2023 11:04

Two portions here.

Clefable · 14/09/2023 11:04

Two adults and a kid maybe? When I make bolognaise I use 500g of mince and bulk it out with loads of soffrito, sometimes peppers and bacon, and two tins of chopped tomatoes and that does about two days for me and two young kids (who still eat loads!) with some leftover.

BalletBob · 14/09/2023 11:05

That would do for myself and DH, plus 1 child. I could make it stretch to the preschooler too but then DH would 100% be hungry at 9pm and on UberEats.

NauseousNancy · 14/09/2023 11:05

i use 250g for our family of 4 - but that includes a 6 year old and a 10 year old who isn’t a big meat eater.

i grate carrot in it, and it often gets us enough for a small lunch portion the next day.

we have plenty pasta with it - pasta is cheaper than meat, and at the moment that’s what counts!!

Dartmoorcheffy · 14/09/2023 11:06

2 people in the real world, 8 adults, 12 kids and 3 days worth of leftovers on mumsnet

CatherinedeBourgh · 14/09/2023 11:06

1.3 portions.

I do 3x that for 4 people. Two teen boys and one exercise addict dh.

None overweight.

Handcreamqueen · 14/09/2023 11:06

That would easily feed my dh, 18 and 15 yr old dc. If I bulk it up with enough veg I can get another portion to make into something else for dh the next day.

mynameiscalypso · 14/09/2023 11:07

If it was just that recipe, I'd do it for me, DH and our four year old. But I would normally add more veg and lentils to bulk it out so the meat would go further.
