How many portions is this for your family?

315g mince
1x 400g tin tomatoes
1 courgette
1 large pepper
2x garlic cloves

I think my portion sizes are awry and am trying to cut down on the pasta to 80g per person without starving my 13 year old! I'm sure we all are far too much pasta vs sauce.

3 adults.

TadpolesInPool · 14/09/2023 12:46

"A recommended portion of mince is 100g"

But you can't standardise like that! My 9 and 12 year olds have different needs to each other and to me and DH.

If 4 adults need 400g of mince then it's totally normal that 2 adults, 1 preteen and 1 child eat 350g....

Goldencup · 14/09/2023 13:00

When we ate meat 250g would do 2 adults and 2 primary age DC. But would put 2X tinned tomatoes in, also soffritto as others said. Now 350g of Quorn does 3 adult size people twice.

Goldencup · 14/09/2023 13:02

Sorry it's 500g of Quorn. I use a bit less than 100g of mince per person. But will cook 500g of pasta for 3 or 4.

UrsulaBelle · 14/09/2023 13:08

That would do 3 portions for me, but I'd definitely add an onion and some tomato puree. Less sauce and more pasta is the Italian way. I do 90g pasta each adult.

TheClitterati · 14/09/2023 13:09

I would make that for 3 of us - 1 adult, 2 teens.
There might be leftovers for lunch the next day.

Whataretheodds · 14/09/2023 13:11

If you order Spaghetti Bol in a restaurant, the amount of meat sauce is always smaller than I serve at home, there tends to be a lot of pasta

Yes but/and Italians would eat this as a much smaller portion in the course before the main, not the only (savoury) course

Sugarcoatt · 14/09/2023 13:13

315g mince wouldn’t feed 2 adults and a 5yo in our house! DH would eat 200g just by himself. 5yo would eat about 100g. There wouldn’t be enough left over for me to have a meal too.

We eat quite high protein and low carb though. I don’t think it’s healthy to fill up on cheap white carbs.

But good Italian pasta is soooo delicious.

PurBal · 14/09/2023 13:24

5 adults or 4 adults and 2 small children. With pasta. We normally do 85g per person.

PassMeTheCookies · 14/09/2023 13:46

That would do two adults and one child in my house, or two adults and one of us for lunch the next day.

I use a 500g pack and get 4-5 adult sized portions from it, but that's with adding a full punnet of mushrooms to bulk it out.

itsmyp4rty · 14/09/2023 13:51

100g of mince per person seems to be recommended in recipes.

orangegato · 14/09/2023 13:54

2 people. Nothing worse than not enough sauce with pasta, I’d rather have leftovers than stingy portions.

Appleblum · 14/09/2023 13:57

We do 400g mince for 2 adults and 2 young children, and have enough sauce leftover for another lunch for the 2 children. In terms of pasta it's 250g for the 4 of us.

Nw22 · 14/09/2023 14:00

The mince is plenty for 3 but that is not much veg

Mossstitch · 14/09/2023 14:38

3 adults but my adult sons eat 125gr dried pasta (I got sick of guessing recently and doing too much so weighed it till I got the portion right) they are not overweight and 13 year old boys need a LOT!

Carlessly · 14/09/2023 19:46

I'm not so far out then! It was for 3 of us. DC1 ate everything, DC2 the sauce and a couple of pieces of pasta and I could have had less pasta.
Normally I would put an extra tin of tomatoes in and some more veg and stretch it to two meals (6 portions) to try to save a bit money but I decided today I wouldn't. I think we've been eating too much pasta and not enough protein.

Do people really add carrots to peppers and courgettes? I either do a summer variant with peppers/courgette etc and a winter variant with carrots, celery etc and a fake variant with lentils instead of meat. Apologies to your Italian ancestors @CurlewKate Peas though, that just sounds wrong! Although, isn't mince with peas and carrots a cottage pie?

I grate carrot, courgette into mine as well
as Diced carrot, celery and onions. Tinned toms, fresh ones and pasata. Like I say I bulk it out a lot.

then split that mix and add in apices tin each of black, chick and kidney beans and then some mixed taco beans in sauce Some cooked off chorizo and another tin of toms and you have a fabulous chilli.

I'll add as much veg as possible to bulk it out anf make more meals without having to add extra mince that costs more. Spag bol/chilli etc are easy ways to get 5 portions of veg in 1 meal

ShadyPaws · 15/09/2023 11:13

I did a chicken pasta bake yesterday which seemed to stretch like rubber!
Big thing of chicken thighs, about 400g and only 350g pasta. Ended up with 6 decent portions

caringcarer · 15/09/2023 15:10

I'd say 3 generous portions.

caringcarer · 15/09/2023 15:15

I make a 🌈 Bolognese. 500 grammes of mince, 2 tins of tomatoes, 1 red, 1 yellow and one orange or green pepper, 1 onion. A large squirt of tomato puree and a squirt of garlic paste. Large spoonful of dried basil. This makes 6 portions. I serve with wholemeal spaghetti and a garlic bread to share. If I only used 1 tin of tomatoes it only makes 5 portions.

PickAChew · 15/09/2023 15:25

I'd say 2-3 adult portions but, in reality, DH and I would polish it off but with 125g of pasta between us as we tend to go lighter on the carbs for most meals. And I'd make it so it tasted of something so the courgette would be out in favour of some more aromatic veg.
