How many portions is this for your family?

Carlessly · 14/09/2023 10:37

315g mince
1x 400g tin tomatoes
1 courgette
1 large pepper
2x garlic cloves

I think my portion sizes are awry and am trying to cut down on the pasta to 80g per person without starving my 13 year old! I'm sure we all are far too much pasta vs sauce.

My adult sized 14 year old son who goes to the gym and plays football would eat all of that. He's eating me out of house and home at the moment.

If I went to my sister's house (her and her 3 daughters) it would probably do all 5 of us!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 14/09/2023 11:51

That would probably do my two teens!

I've just totted up my batch cooking for this week.

5 x 500g 20% mince (quite a lot of fat drained off)
3 x tins of toms
1 pack of celery
3 onions
3 carrots
cup of wine
half a tube of tomato puree

When done and reduced down, that made 4 bags of about 800g each. By my calcs that's 625g of meat per bag, between 5 of us, 2 adults, 2 teens, one kid. That's normally enough for dinner time and then the teens finish it off later.

CalmaLlamaDown · 14/09/2023 11:51

Two adult portions, based on half a pepper and half a courgette each.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 14/09/2023 11:53

1.5 portions, but DP had the appetite of a growing teenager who plays sport...

Nap1983 · 14/09/2023 11:56

I reckon that would be one dinner for 3 of us 2 adults and 15yr old, with a portion left for 1 adults lunch or 15yr old dinner. I think 80g of pasta is a good amount for adults, i use about 60 for my DD.

greenacrylicpaint · 14/09/2023 11:56

we do about double that for 5 adult size people (3 teens)
usually a vegetarian version with lentils or mushroom instead of mince.
veg are youd friends, they make you feel full and should be the bulk of any meal you make.

Nap1983 · 14/09/2023 11:58

I would have more veg in though

3WildOnes · 14/09/2023 11:58

500g feeds us (2 adults and 3 children) for dinner and then usually leftover for maybe a couple of us for lunch. I do put more veg in than you though.

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 14/09/2023 11:59

That would feed my family of 3 for the entire week. (That includes my son who is a strapping 6ft9 teen)

Noicant · 14/09/2023 12:02

That would be fine for 2 adults and one 4yr old for us.

RuthW · 14/09/2023 12:12

Mince and tomatoes are what I use for two meals for two people.

I'd add more veg though.

Janieforever · 14/09/2023 12:15

How many portions would it make you op?

Ohhmydays · 14/09/2023 12:17

felisha54 · 14/09/2023 10:40

I'd say 3 people. I cook 500g when making a spag Bol and that feeds 2 adults and 1 teen. There's also enough for 2 more teen portions later in the week.

I use 500g mince for whatever i am making. Sheps pie, spag bol etc that does 2under 5s and 2 and a half adults. 19yr old ds and dp have adult portion, I usually have a portion size between kids/adult size

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 14/09/2023 12:18

In our house, two portions, maybe with a tiny bit left over for the next day.

Mamadothehump · 14/09/2023 12:20

Me and DH would easily eat that between the 2 of us!

Catsfrontbum · 14/09/2023 12:23

Hmmm, I really stretch the meat out in meals like that, so that would do 8 portions. However my kids don’t eat masses and neither do I of that kind of meal.

mosiacmaker · 14/09/2023 12:28

That would be for me and DP only, but we try to be carb free so would probably have it with a different vegetable or small amount of sweet potato mashed.

TadpolesInPool · 14/09/2023 12:34

Am really surprised by the answers.

That would do our family of 4. We all do sport multiple times a week and are healthy BMIs.

Me and DS2 (9) - smaller portions each

DH and DS1 (12) - twice what I give to me and DS2 each, plus extra pasta for DH

This is not a "competitive eating MN family" but an ordinary, very active family which has never had any weight issues

Why is your weight and activity relevant. Are you insinuating everyone else must be over weight and lazy?😂

a recommended portion size is 100g of mince per person. So the fact you under cater is maybe more of a question..

LegendsBeyond · 14/09/2023 12:40

3 people

INeedNewShoes · 14/09/2023 12:42

350g mince here would feed two adults and two young children.

I wouldn't be trying to restrict your 13 year old to 80g pasta unless they have a sedentary lifestyle. Growing active teenagers need more than us.

mrsm43s · 14/09/2023 12:42

3 generous portions, or 4 standard portions, if plenty of veg was added. But I'd tend to use mushrooms rather than pepper, which I think might bulk it out a bit more, and I'd use sofritto to start it as well. I'd generally only put veg in it if I had some random bits to use up.

Just 3 portions if I did it with just that amount of mince, sofritto, tomato puree, red wine, beef stock and bay leaves, which is generally how I do it. It would then be served with veg on the side, or a green salad on the side (plus the spaghetti, of course).

RainCloudsInTheSky · 14/09/2023 12:43

I use 500g for 2 adults and two teens so I think it would be ok for two adults and a child.

Carbonicalloy · 14/09/2023 12:46

Would-be six here but that includes an elderly parent with small appetite and two young DC who would only have a tiny bit of meat on their pasta, but plenty of cheese. Me, DH and the tween eat normal portions.

I usually make our bol with 500g mince, a bit more veg and handful of lentils- that feeds all six of us for one meal and leftovers which will feed some but not all of us (so eg if DH working late or tween at a friend's house)

Twitch45 · 14/09/2023 12:46

I am genuinely surprised by these replies!

I use 750g mince for bolognese. It makes 4 portions (my DC are 13 and 10 - so it makes two meals for them. DH and I don't eat meat!)
